Coincidentally I wrapped up that show earlier this year! You may check out my “Directing Wizard of Oz” playlist here on YT, but I don’t have a specific video on casting advice. I’ll look into it! I will share that with Wizard of Oz your Wicked Witch will make or break your show. If you don’t have a believable villain (in that ICONIC role) it is really rough to believe the rest of the story. Idk why people think theatre is easy and not as hard as sports. Theatre still has pressure. And it’s harder than being in a movie or tv show cause ur live. If u voice crack there’s no second tape. If u forget a line there’s no tape 2. If you miss pronounce a word there’s no cut the cameras. I have been doing acting since I was 10 and it’s really fun but not as easy as people think.

@cayleejo

I am also a shaky person! Before I walk into the audition room I always "shake it out", jump around, shake each arm, each leg, take deep breaths, do whatever you can to get that pent up energy out of your body. But, if you still end up shaking a little it can also add to your character! Whether a character is angry, sad, or even incredibly happy, they make tremble with this feelings. Break a leg!

My school is doing Tuck Everlasting this year. Which kind of sucks because we have pretty large department of mostly girls. It has 11 roles, 4 are female, 6 are male, and one is a carnival worker with two lines. Long story short, I got the carnival worker as a first-year theater kid (even over students who played main characters last year) because I was the only one to give the give the character a personality. I did a cartwheel (unprompted) and let my natural accent shine through. They also gave opportunities to try out for other roles in the show at the last-minute. I knew I’d probably suck because I’m not a super strong singer and I had no prep but I tried anyway and I was also told that helped.

hiii i love your videos! quick question: when im performing my monologue/song do i maintain eye contact with the judges or look ahead
@cayleejo
@cayleejo 9 ай бұрын
This is a great question! In general I would never maintain eye contact with the panel while auditioning with your song or monologue - this can just become a little uncomfortable/unnerving as someone sitting on the other side of the table. BUT, I do highly suggest that you determine who your character is singing to and decide where they are in the room. For example, if they're singing to a parent maybe that parent is standing just behind the judge's table, so THAT is the point that you're making eye contact with/directing movements towards. I hope that helps!

I have a question. So I’m planning on auditioning on the last Monday of February for a double cast production of The Thirty Three Little Pigs (play) and one of the casts have a later rehearsal time than the other. I have some after school activities that happen before the later cast rehearsals, so that would work. But, I’m worried about that i could get cast in the earlier cast and would be forced to either refuse the role or quit my two other activities. Should I put down the activities on the conflicts list? And would that affect me getting cast? I’m willing to skip the activities for important tech week rehearsals towards the end, but I don’t want to quit everything entirely. I would appreciate your advice greatly. Thank you!
@cayleejo
@cayleejo 3 ай бұрын
If I were the casting director that would absolutely NOT impact casting decisions! In fact, I would be thankful that you chose to be honest from the beginning. If you're trying to work around your other activities it shows that you're an individual who places a high priority on the activities that they're involved in, meaning you would also be a valuable cast member! I would absolutely write down your conflicts and not worry about it being a factor in casting.

how did you become a theatre teacher? like what did you go to college for? i think i want to be a theatre teacher and i don’t know if i need a BFA or something diffrent!!

I'm actually planning on making a video that dives into my personal teaching journey, but the short version is, I actually have a BFA in English with a minor in secondary education. I had ZERO professional theatre training when I got my very first teaching job (high school theatre teacher), but I had a lot of practical experience in theatre and that is why they hired me. I went on to earn to my MA (Master of Arts) in Theatre Education in 2021. My recommendation is to either pursue a BFA in Theatre Education (quite a few colleges offer this degree program now) OR pursue a BA in Theatre while also being enrolled in an education program to compete certification, student teaching, etc. I hope this helps!

I studied and got a BA in Theatre Education from Ball State University! It’s a true theatre ed major and not a theatre and education double major!

I need advice please 🙏 I’m auditioning for Charlie and the Chocolate factory and hoping to get Veruca salt. I want to do either stupid with love or in my own little corner. Which one should I do?? Or should I do a different song??
@cayleejo
@cayleejo 4 ай бұрын
I think "Stupid with Love" from Mean Girls could be a fun choice - just be strategic about what section you cut from it. I honestly feel like "In My Own Little Corner" doesn't give you a great opportunity to show off your ability to act like Veruca, as it is such a sweet/gentle song. A cutting of "The Stepsisters Lament" also from Cinderella could be a great choice. Otherwise I would seriously take a look at some of Little Red's songs in Into the Woods - her section of the prologue would be a great choice for Veruca - or even a select cutting of "I Know Things Now". "My New Philosophy" from You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" would also be an excellent choice, or "Naughty" from Matilda. Break a leg!

You have plenty of time to prepare! Just start working on it a little bit everyday so that when the audition comes around it feels like second nature. Break a leg!

I got sick both times before auditions at the same company. I completely lost my voice a couple days before the audition and even while auditioning I only had half my vocal range... 😂

I have a question. If the judges or whoever I'm trying out in front of Say that I need a 1 minute monolog But I've timed myself in recorded myself doing my monolog and it comes up to 1 minute and 20 seconds. Do you think that's OK?
@cayleejo
@cayleejo 4 ай бұрын
In my personal opinion I would try to cut it down by at least 15 seconds (by removing content if possible, not by speaking faster). I never mind if someone goes over a few seconds, but if I were on the panel I would feel like 20 seconds over means they potentially didn’t read the instructions. Break a leg!

Hi! I was just wondering, what helps with audition nerves? Ive found that when Im nervous, I stutter a bit and make very akward eye contact, which I want to avoid. 🤣 Any tips? Thank you!
@cayleejo

I had an audition once where I was so nervous that my left foot was tapping uncontrollably… my entire monologue! I couldn’t help it, my body was betraying me. After that I found that getting my nervous energy out before I walked in the room was super helpful. Before walking in the room I shake out each limb (left hand, shake for 10 seconds, right hand, left foot, right foot) and take nice deep breaths to relax my body and it helps so much! Or, if you’re someone who is really relaxed by music, create a playlist you can listen to before going in the room, just have one earbud in so you can still hear them call your turn, but that may really help calm your nerves! In terms of the eye contact, find a spot behind the audition panel, your “invisible other”, maybe it’s a clock on the wall, and really try to focus on that while performing. I promise if you do make eye contact with the audition panel it is not nearly as awkward for them as you feel like it is for you, so it likely isn’t a big deal ♥️.
