things i've learned especially for high school theater: -sing a song that you can sing very well under any circumstances -continuing on that, have one or two backup songs in case someone who you know is better takes your song!! -DONT SING A POP SONG!!!! -audition with a song thats in the vocal range of the character you're auditioning for -don't tell your friends who you're auditioning for (causes drama) -dont sing longer than they want you to (probably don't go over a minute) -AUDITION FOR THE ROLE YOU TRULY WANT!! this year i wanted a lead so bad but felt like because of my age they wouldn't even consider me, regardless i wrote it down, got called back, and got the part!
@nicolelynn37505 жыл бұрын
edda. As someone about to graduate with a degree in musical theatre, I’d argue that singing a pop song in auditions is REALLY common. More shows on Broadway and going on tour are juke box musicals, or are really contemporary, and the casting call often asks for a pop/rock song. I’d recommend having a cut or two of (not-overdone or overly popular) pop or country songs :)
@eddap195 жыл бұрын
NicoleLynn I see what you mean, but for my directors at my school they say that they find most people can’t sing pop music and show off the part of their voice they want to show for the part they’re auditioning for. It does depend on the show though, but most high school shows i’ve been a part of they did not want it and didn’t cast people solely for singing a pop song.

When I auditioned for beauty and the beast in high school I had never belted I front of people before, so I went with is this home. 10 other girls picked that. Panicked me decided to learn from scratch a change in me, because nobody was singing that. I actually hit the note, the directors cried, I got a callback, and got the part. I made sure to tell them that I just learned it, because I didn’t know what measure I was starting with and after I sang my director said “GURL HOW DID YOU JUST LEARN THAT” I was shocked tbh. 😂
@erolibrahimovic26815 жыл бұрын
Advice: If you don’t get cast, it DOESN’T mean that your audition was horrible. Often times, casting is not just about you but the people who you would possibly be working with. If you are at a Broadway level and the other people who auditioned aren’t, they will choose the people who will blend together better. If you feel like you killed your audition, you probably did. It may just not be what they’re looking for. ❤️

Just a few tips of advice!! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS dress up for an audition. Not only does it show off how awesome you look, but it also shows that you care about the audition, and you want to put your best foot forward. Also, if you’re auditioning for a show that you know other people in or that your friends are auditioning for as well, maybe don’t share with them for whom you are auditioning. It could create drama between you and your friend if you are auditioning for the same role. I’ve lost friendships in this way, so maybe don’t tell them who you’re auditioning for. Break a leg everybody!

Advice: 1. Do not stop going or apologize! If you have messed up, just smile bigger! 2. Always read through the scripts they give you and prepare for EVERY possible part you may need to read for. I remember one time where I wanted this one part and I read up on every line for auditions, and then they made me read once for a side character, and I bombed HARD. So just prepare yourself. 3. Work on a song for your audition! Whether they give you a song to sing or they let you pick, it is always comforting to know you have a song that you 100% know how to sing. 4. ALWAYS SMILE. Unless you are singing a song or saying a line with different emotions than a smile- because let’s face it, it would be terrifying to watch someone sing On My Own from Le Mis or Agony from Into the Woods with a huge smile- then you should be smiling, outgoing, kind, respectful and friendly. 5. Talk to other people you are auditioning with. If you are going to be spending months with these people then you need to try to socialize with them before anyone gets assigned parts because -and trust me on this- groups will form! There will be that one group of all the main people, there will be the group of all the chorus and ensemble, and NONE of them will talk to each other, you meet the best people in musical theater and if you don’t start to break the barrier before it’s made, you may be missing out! 6. Have fun! That is really the best part! Musical theater and just theater in general is so freaking fun! Hope this helps

Here's something I picked up on myself: When you enter the room where everyone is waiting to be called for their audition, *especially* if you don't know what system they have in place for calling people in (calling by last name, first name, etc), *assume you're going to go next.* When I auditioned of Wizard of Oz, I entered my school auditorium thinking I wasn't going to be first. I was first. I hadn't even finished the paperwork. Everyone got there 20 minutes earlier than expected, so they started calling people in. I had to rush getting my paperwork done I could audition. Also, again from personal experience, if you crack/mess up a word or two, *just keep going.* Don't apologize, ask to restart/start the line again, just keep singing.

Always be prepared to change the way you are presenting a character (this goes for ANY acting). A director may say ‘could you try something different?’ Or ‘change it’, and you have to be able to change the way you’re characterizing just like that. rafaela I FEEL YA! here's what I've done: 1. I've googled alto songs and used the songs that I think fit my voice in auditions! not the best idea, but it pushes you in the right direction if you're stuck and you can't find one! 2. sometimes you get really lucky and you find a beautiful song that fits your voice perfectly! that only really comes with listening to a LOT of material though, but one day you'll find one and you'll scream in excitement! 3. if you have a great mix range but you have a tiny belt, aim for that mix! choose songs that compliment your mix! some of the songs in my rep are: -Simple Joys (Pippin, Leading Player) : charming, but not overly sexy. stage presence is a necessity, they're very manipulative. this song requires charisma! Leading Player is comfortably low, I think you'll be fine -Don't Wanna Be Here (Ordinary Days, Deb) : charming in a dorky way, Deb's a mess waiting to explode. the notes might be a little high! Deb also has another great song called Calm but that song's SUPER FAST hope that helps! I haven't auditioned for anything in ages haha

As a professional stage manager (25+ years) who has run hundreds of auditions, I will also add that your audition starts the second you enter the building. I've always been asked by the director/producers about how the actor treated me and the other actors waiting to be called into the audition room. On many occasions I dealt with rude actors and always passed that information on. We have a saying in professional theatre: If you're on time -you're late! Always arrive early. Always.

They both got pretty sizable roles in the show. You're also probably doing way better than you think you are. Also, yes, I am watching Katherine's old videos because I have an audition coming up soon hehe. Speaking of which does anyone else have auditions coming up???

I've got an audition tonight, I'm excited. Anyway. I'd like to share a story! My first audition was for Suessical at a local-ish theater. Tip: try to control anxiety. To make a very long story short, I had a huge panic attack, cried, hid, and refused to even look at anyone. But! I came back the next audition night and tried again. I didn't have any lines or solos, but I still got in. It's all about the effort.

2:00 omg so important! After so many years of doing this, ten minutes early is late for me. For auditions and ESPECIALLY for rehearsals. Get there early, warm up, etc, and be ready to go when the time is. I have seen this save almost a half an hour in rehearsals when everyone is ready when the director says. 5:27 this one is also huge. While you should never be rude to anyone, I have seen situations where two people of equal talent are up for the role, they will choose the nicer person, because they are easier to work with in the directors eyes. Even if it's not in the actual audition room. People in the waiting room, situations where you don't think it will get back to the director but it will. Once a girl was trying to psych out another girl there to audition in the bathroom, and she didn't know that the assistant casting director was in one of the stalls. Yikes. Guess who didn't get cast in the show. This was my two cents but love your videos Kath and I'll see you next Thursday!
@PlantBasedBride5 жыл бұрын
My biggest advice is to be the most genuinely happy and friendly version of yourself at an audition. Not just common courtesy (not being rude, to ANYONE... even the clerk at the front desk) but actual, genuine friendliness. Say hello to everyone, actually respond in a natural way when they ask you questions, etc. It can be hard when you’re nervous, but it shows the panel that you’re a kind, easygoing person who would be lovely to work with! Obviously don’t take this too far. Don’t chat their ears off or start a conversation, but you don’t have to be a mute smiling actor robot either 😂
@reeselynn52625 жыл бұрын
Tips: 1. Always be nice to the panel (they also like people based on their personality) 2. Try to memorize your song, monologue, poem, etc... (the panel will be impressed and they will see you take time to memorize things) 3. Never leave directly after finishing your piece because the panel might have something to say to you 4. Try to pick an audition piece that fits for the role your auditioning for 5. (Most importantly) Stay true to you! If you be yourself the panel may like you better! (All of these things have worked for me) Also thanks Kat for all the support! Your audition and performer tips have helped get the lead in Alice in wonderland! Love you Good luck to all on your next audition!👍🏼😊😊👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌🏻🤘

Here’s a tip for auditions: if the director asks you if you want to go and sing your characters song, SAY YES. Because if you don’t put your self out there they’re never gonna see your true talent! At my first ever audition for the music man they taught me a part of the Wells Fargo Wagon song and they asked if I wanted to sing it! Even though I was 7 I NEEDED to show what I could do!!! 😊 💕 🎭

So for the techies out there: be confident during interviews. Don’t be afraid to bring a full portfolio and resume don’t be afraid to tell them how good you are. That’s why you’re there!!

when learning your lines, be careful how you learn them. to learn some especially tricky lines, i used to make jokes out of them to make them memorable. however, that just ended up with me laughing at my own (unfunny) joke. thankfully this was during a tech run and the show went smoothly, but i would still be wary!

A mistake I’ve made at a couple of auditions is that I get to nervous, then I forget the words to the song, then apologise profusely. If you accidentally forget words to a monologue, or a song you’re singing, stop. Breath, and start talking or singing again when you feel comfortable. And don’t apologise, just keep going !! 💕💕💕

advice: in my personal experience, if you have the chance to bring a track or a music sheet, it's better to have a track of the song you're going to sing than the music sheet, sometimes the pianist can be unfamiliar with the song or just tired and thats always a disadvantage. but that's just my opinion
@thebefanee5 жыл бұрын
Totally half agree! It can make you feel more prepared and allow you to have more confidence in your audition. HOWEVER, some times they are also looking for how you work with a new pianist and a situation. If you do have to use a pianist you are unfamiliar with, mark your music with cuts, tempos, dynamics and the such really clearly. If there is a space for you to go and talk to your pianist before you start to give them a tempo, sing a line and tap it out (do not snap it out like you're demanding the cheque from a waiter). The pianist may be involved later on down the line and a lot can be inferred from that interaction. And make sure to thank them and collect your music.
@ximenaaguirretorres25865 жыл бұрын

Late to the party but wanted to share this. When I was 14 I auditioned for Louisa in The Sound of Music with a community musical theater company. They specifically told all the kids not to worry about any kind of "acting" when we read sides. They just wanted to know what our speaking voices sounded like and they'd get us up to speed on the acting stuff later. Fast-forward six years, I'm in college and reading for Eliza in My Fair Lady. And I read the sides straight -- no accent, no inflections, no emotions -- just the way I'd done it when I was 14, because I still thought that's how you read sides. Needless to say, I wasn't cast. Moral of the story: Act, baby, act! Go big. Crank it up to 11. The casting team knows it's easy to dial an 11 performance down to 8, but they won't know if they can get an 8 out of that person who just gave them a 3. P.S. I did not get Louisa (more about my looks than anything, I was a very -- ahem -- well-developed 14) but had a blast in the ensemble.

My biggest piece of advice: Fake your confidence!! If you are nervous, do all you can to hide it! Don't explain that you're sick and aren't as good as usual. Don't stop halfway through a song because you missed a note. The directors are looking for someone who will be confident on stage and use improv when they make a mistake instead of freezing up. I like to pretend I'm actually on stage. If you wouldn't do it in front of an audience, don't do it in front of your casting directors.

So many good things in this video. My biggest audition advice is to never reveal vocal issues you’re dealing with unless you are directly asked. No one likes excuses, and your cold (if it’s a cold) is probably effecting your vocal quality less than you think. #techniqueforthewin

One thing I have recently learned is just how important your accompanist is to your being cast. I recently went on a casting call for a professional show. One of my first professional auditions. I was called back after the dance audition to sing. Everyone had very pristine rep books in binders with neatly printed music and I was the dud with loose leaf sheet music. Not the smartest move on my behalf. I didn’t get cast (although I don’t think this was the ONLY factor by any means) but it really taught me that you need to put in 110% to make life easy for the accompanist. if they don’t think you care about the accompanist, then why should they think you’ll care about the production. I wish I’d known this sooner but I’m grateful to know it now. Don’t be the dud like me with loose sheet music in a recycled folder. Do yourself the favor of making a really neat rep book. Your accompanist will thank you and maybe even be the deciding factor on casting you.

I auditioned for Cinderella in Middle School, and they changed what you can sing for your audition (switched from being able to sing whatever you want to only being able to sing the songs in the musical) VERY last minute. So I had to change my set completely, and the only song in my vocal range was the ugly step sister song, and so I decided, “well I’m just going to sing it naturally and not sing it ugly like the actual song”, and apparently that wasn’t allowed, so when I started singing she stopped me and told me to sit back down because I didn’t sing the song how I was supposed to. So I lost the part as the evil step mother just because I wasn’t allowed to continue to sing. I didn’t sing Cinderella’s song because I couldn’t sing soprano yet. It was a tough blow. And the show sucked miserably.

Advice: If you're sick on your audition day like I was (raspy voice, sore throat, stuffy nose, the whole shabang), go through with your audition. You still need to do your best and try to get that part you're auditioning for. If you're obviously sick, the casting panel knows that you're not like that ALL the time, and if you still kill it while you're sick, they also know you'll be even better when you're not. Also, drink LOTS of water throughout the day so you don't pass out onstage during a monologue. (Not speaking from personal experience or anything)

Advice: if you are going to an audition CHOOSE THE ROLE THAT FITS YOU even though another role may look super fun to play you want to audition for the role that realistically you know you can play song a song that compliments your voice and look the casting director in the eye because this can really help them know that you are comfortable around other actors and people you might not know. Don't ever act snobby or rude because you never know who is around you and they might tell the director something so that you might not get a good part. Always be polite and he says to work with

I once auditioned for a show and got audition feedback and was told I was talented but didn't show confidence. If I can't be confident in front of 10 people, how do they know I will be confident in front of hundreds? Also, be happy, smile, and have fun without over doing it. Step 2- Drag your friend into musicals with you so you won't be lonely. Step 3- Learn more about theater: Listen to more musicals, learn what to do in auditions and learn to be more confident about your performances. Step 4- Take singing lessons. ADVICE: if there’s a live accompanist and they’re playing the wrong tempo, you can ask to have a moment with them and clarify “hey can we go a bit faster” or “hey can we go a bit slower”. that doesn’t always mean the accompanist will do it, but it shows the people behind the table that this is not how the song should go and that it’s not your fault for picking a song too fast or too slow for you
