Although some people don't get it, this is arguably one of the most anti-racist movies of all time, and also one of the funniest movies of all time. Humour can be a powerful weapon.

Nobody is safe from stereotypes in this movie. You can’t get mad at one and not the other so it’s best to just laugh at the joke and realize that the people are acting in a spoof western movie and everything is just for laughs.

1) The part right after the cutoff was Sheriff Bart saying "Oh, baby! You are so talented.... and they are so dumb!" 2) Subtle joke. The chairman said "... extend to you a laurel and hearty handshake.". That was a reference to the comedy team Laurel and Hardy. 3) The reason it was rated "R" is because at the time this came out, "NC17" didn't yet exist. 4) And as others have said, you really need to watch the whole movie. 5) Also, this came out in 1974. Guess what else came out the same year? Young Frankenstein, also by Mel Brooks. Both of them are in the top 10 funniest movies ever made.

This movie is the funniest anti-racism movie ever made, it shows just how stupid racist’s are and racism is!!! Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder are fantastic together. Mel Brooks wrote the black parts and Richard Pryor wrote the white parts. I would suggest reacting to the whole movie!!!👌👍✌️😁

Maybe people aren’t “going out of their way” to get offended as you’re suggesting but are more vocal about it. A pretty big segment of the world population has access to a personal social media account. It’s our own personal bullhorn. Have you ever been on Yelp?! You want to see outrage, take a gander at that!

This whole movie is like this. Mel Brooks mocked racism and other injustices in his movies in unique ways. As Heidi Fedor comments below, Richard Prior wrote all the racism jokes in this movie. There are a lot of them and, though this might be the funniest one, there are other gems. Its a good movie.

No one gets the joke anymore about "A Laurel, and Hardy Handshake." Laurel and Hardy were a very famous film comedy team of the 1920's, 30's 40's. the reference was to them. Normally if from my generation, even as a 2nd hand fan of Laurel and Hardy reruns on TV, from the next generation, you guys would be laughing at that.

Blazing Saddles was released in the 1970s Mel Brooks was the director and he made a conscious effort to make fun of all of the stereotypes of the time if you liked this part you'll love the whole movie

I second that. It was co-written by the late, great Richard Pryor. If you like comedy, and if you like comedy with a point (a very sharp one), this is an absolute must see. That scene is just the tip of the iceberg.

Blazing Saddles is great because, more than just being a "western-movie parody," it sends up racism in hilarious fashion and puts it in its place. One of the most uproariously funny movies ever made depicts characters who triumph over racism. That's why it's one of my favorites.

The "R" rated for sexual content is the sections of the movie that starred Madeline Kahn as Lilly Von Schstoop. Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks wrote 90% of the script and Richard was supposed play the sheriff. I think Clevon Little nailed it with that movie. Awesome. Hilarious.

Ladies, please watch the whole film!!! You will be going to the hospital afterwards from a busted gut and a broken funny bone from laughing SO HARD!!!!!!! I just know that you will love this movie. And put it in your list of future " must watch comedies afterwards!!!! 47 years later and this scene along with about 10 others still makes me laugh so hard that I start crying!!!! Enjoy!!

Mel Brooks assembled a great cast for this anti-racism movie without most people even realizing it. Cleavon Little was a tremendous comedic actor and this movie is an epic piece of history.

Definitely worth watching the whole movie. I hated it when I was a kid but recently watched it with my son. We both died laughing. Fantastic jokes and wonderful acting from everyone in it! No one is free from being made fun of in this movie!

Funny how people claim it could never be made today because of the use of the historically accurate language which was the whole damn point of it showing how other westerns white washed the racism of the time. I think some people see the wrong thing in the movie.

The actors playing the townsfolk were so conflicted about the script that many of them went to Cleavon Little saying they couldn't say these things. Cleavon told them "they're just words, I know you don't mean it."

Richard Prior was one of the major writer for this film and and between him and Mel they made sure that EVERYONE was insulted repeatedly, this film showed how stupid racism is because they treated everyone exactly the same... Badly! Note - Near the end of the film, the comment "Not the Irish" was because Mel asked the film crew if the had failed to insult anyone during production and several of the Irish workers said that they had been missed out. Also read the names on the board during the town meeting but no comments about...being in the 'family' way.

Mel Brookes wrote this movie with Richard Pryor. Mel had intended for Richard to play part of Sheriff Bart but was told no by the studio. This movie stands as one greatest comedies of all time.
