Not only is Kathleen Battle a PHENOMENAL singer, but she's a very classy and elegant woman as well. My inspiration!

Thanks for posting. Big fan. I thought I had seen almost everything from her. And nothing like a little Ellington on a Sunday morning!

So exquisite. Refreshing it is, to hear the exchange between each instrumentalist and vocalist. On second thought, Battle's nearly four-octave range exceeds her coloratura status. She's a human instrument.

No mention that this is "Creole Love Call", using the original 1928 Duke Ellington melody and major parts of the arrangement. Interesting to compare Kathleen's version to the original version by Adelaide Hall.

This is an Ellington masterpiece. It entered the Billboard USA song charts in 1928 at No. 19.

great singer, great artist, too temperamental yet in many cases that temperament is what made her the great artist she is (was?).

Beautiful, but Adelaide Hall did this WAY better. That "dirty" voice manipulation -- Battle just can't do it. Not sorry I heard this, but Adelaide Hall is still the best.

I don't think she ever recorded this for an album. This was a PBS special from the 80s that focused on the music of Duke Ellington and this was recorded specifically for the program.
@saxman318310 жыл бұрын
Well I just feel kind of lucky I was able to capture about 4 to 5 performances from that program if you go to my page you can see the four performances that I was able to save.Ironically I had just bought my first VCR the same day It aired. Thank goodness I was able to capture these performances because I've never seen them aired anywhere since.

It's a shame that PBS has never released "Ellington: The Music Lives On" on DVD. I've contact WNET & received the brush-off. I taped it when it first aired & a boyfriend taped over it with Benny Hill!!! I'd pay good money to obtain a copy of the entire program.
