I am so pleased I lived during her peak singing years. She is simply peerless--the best coloratura of her generation. Long live Ms. Battle.

I was CCM the same years she was. They only let her sing lieder and small things - Mozart masses. I remember her master's recital. The skinniest little thing with braces. Sang well as I recall but never expected her to become La Battle. (I'm a trombone player; what did I know). Funny where life takes us. Extraodinary here. And the little clip from the Met 2016 shows she still has some voice.

One of the profs where I went to music school was her judge at NATS when she was at CCM. He said the same thing, that he never expected her to turn out as a world class singer. There is also a recording of her in the early 1970s in the library where I went to school singing a Messiah. I listened to it and it was very good, but a different voice than what we know as the Great Kathleen Battle. I last saw her live about ten years ago in her home town of Portsmouth Ohio and she was ON! She was very kind and gracious to all of her fans who came to see her.

It's a tragedy that they never recorded Giulio Cesare with her in the studio. She was probably the greatest Cleopatra not just of her generation, but of all time.
