I don't know if any Sophie can live up to this. Battle is perfection in the high and light Strauss roles (Her Zdenka? Amazing.) My contemporary favorite is Erin Morley.

Yes I agree and her Zdenka is the best that I've ever heard yet.. I have the whole Arabella with her as Zdenka from 1983 and I listen to it with radiance :)

I was lucky enough to see them either that year or the previous year. They were incredible. And I agree that currently Erin Morley is the best Sophie around

I agree. Morley is up there. Popp is my favorite, but I was lucky enough to see these 2 in 1985!

@orion8835 :: it doesn't seem to matter :: 50's / 60's, anneliese rothenberger's voice was embarrassingly beautiful. how can someone be born with those kinds of vocal cords ? i don't fully agree that "there have been many" ... ---- strike that❗️ i'm not that into strauss' music/operas ; yet, i still open my big mouth and make comments after hearing a piece of his music with which others are much-more familiar. i haven't heard enough _Sophie's_ to know if you are right or not. i have to respect your greater experience with strauss' music and operas. _[ i saw rothenberger's name and got carried away with past experiences of her magnificent sound ! ]_ battle ? :: that famously difficult vocal phrase of _Sophie's_ ( in the upper-part of the soprano's voice that everyone talks about. i'm sure you know to what i'm referring ... ) battle's performance of that phrase can't be described with this world's limited vocabulary and languages. _[ no wonder people go into musically-induced euphoria by this man's music, especially for female voices❗️]_
