I cannot imagine this more beautifully sung. Rothenberger looks as if she were made of Meissen porcelain, and Jurinac is quite convincing as a young man.

We shall never again see such sumptuous sets and costuming. This is how Rosenkavalier was meant to be done. I like how they have upgraded picture quality to HD even if the lip syncing is a bit off. These are real Straussian voices, very few to compare today. Strauss's music here and throughout the opera is on a level rarely matched by other composers. The final trio is something so exquisite it touches parts of your soul you never knew you had.

pfffft, you can hear the edits and tape saturation which, while flattering to pop music, flattens the dynamics of an opera. more modern recordings are closer to capturing what an actual opera sounds like. they've overcooked the vocals, and the celeste is far thinner sounding than it would be live. it's a great technical achievement of its time, but it has been surpassed.

This is true. But when I ponder what a production like this would cost today -- the sets, the manpower, the rehearsal time --- I just don't think any venue has the will to make that kind of investment.

Rothenberger was the prettiest and most 'girlish' Sophie ever. Totally convincing... and the costumes were gorgeous.

Eine exemplarische Aufnahme - was soll man da anderes sagen?!

I saw this film in the 70s and loved it! Saw it again and again and again! I loved Elizabeth Schwarzkopf as Marshalline and Sena Jurinac as Octavian, Anneliese Rothenberger as Sophie. All the singers who came after them and sang in der Rosenkavalier seemed colorless to me.
@francisanthonypeters363012 жыл бұрын
The best RosenKavelier ever!! They are all the best. I adore Jurinac's Octavian and Rothenberger is the most innocent Sophie and what can I say about Schwarzkopf a real Marschaline!

Yes, real, I sink on my hearts' knees hearing this music, watching them how natural and how artful at the same time they express their feelings on remembering what the "starker Geruch" of the silver rose evokes! The music? It's a melange of heimish "Neuschwanenstein" sentiment and exotic sounds like chromatic putti! That's Richard Strauss in nuce! - this version with Jurinac, Rothenberger and Karajan is as soulfull, as sensual and precise like no other! My heart blushes and the knees wound...

Such an incredible composition. These two are legends in this duet and create so much beauty. The approach is rather dreamlike and cooing yet with very strong diction and a free quality. It creates an innocent reading that is celestial versus overwhelming or too bright which can also work for this. Here however it is akin to an enchanted fairyland ⛅️ 🧚♀️🧚♂️ 🌈 🪄 ....⭐️ 🌟 💫 🌹 tingling and floating and then it’s over....

The crypto-lesbianism of this opera has always made me smile. This particular iteration certainly uses some iconic singers, and such a young Von Karajan! The production itself is magnifique, definitive, I'd say. Not sure how I feel about Strauss in general, though. So very... Nietzschean. And then there's his politics. It's all very complicated....
@christopherjohn63703 жыл бұрын
" The crypto-lesbianism of this opera has always made me smile " ??? Have I lost the plot or have you ?
@johnmanno20523 жыл бұрын
@@christopherjohn6370 Using all women as the romantic leads can be construed as a species of crypto lesbianism. Hardly overt, carefully couched behind the rationalization of "convention", it's akin to using boys to play women in Shakespeare, which critics have called a species of crypto homosexuality. I'm assuming you would disagree. One may.
@johnpickford4222 Жыл бұрын
John Manno: TAKE YOUR CRYPTO-LESBIANISM ATTITUDE AND STICK IT IN THE TWAT OR DICK THAT SERVES AS YOUR BRAIN! Leave your own sexuality out of this. Strauss composed for vocal type and wanted a soprano for male youth. He was afraid if the role was scored for mezzo-soprano that a physically challenged woman would sing the role. He wanted a ‘Mozart Cherubino’ to emphasize wit and charm for vocal composition. What a twisted individual you are to suggest such a thing. Go to h**l!

@onkelgreifenklau3 жыл бұрын
