Once we were eating a late night dinner at a local chain restaurant. It was clear to us that our server was busting a hump to give us great service. At the time, we had three sons roughly his age and who were hard working at their chosen fields. We tipped him $100 dollars on a $45 dollar bill and left a note praising his service. He followed us out to the parking lot and with tears in his eyes thanked us, saying he was paying his pay through college and our tip meant the world to him. Pass it on when you can. It does make a difference.

Lewisburg WV is absolutely gorgeous and the people are so very nice! It’s has a great history but it was a confederate town but it is just extremely beautiful! You can drive down the roads and everyone waves! It’s close to the Greenbrier Hotel! It was the old hotel where the government had a bunker built for Congress! You would love the golf course!

K&P, Ms here. Kismit! You're story about housing in struggling small town v. everything else, totally on the nose! Mr. & I bought our second house this past week after being out of the market for 10 years because of the insane market ups and downs. Our town is River Falls, WI= high taxes, college town that caters more to transient students and local retirees, than struggling families trying to live the USA Dream. Our city council is just Good Ole Boys Club croanies. ACK! I am from here originally! After 10 years of renting, changing jobs to get better pay, raising our two kids, I am sick of this town not providing for the likes of us. We finally got our mortgage approved, and couldn't afford to even look in RF. I found a house 9 mi. down the road in Ellsworth, WI ( Cheese Curd Capital of the World ) and we found our dream home! Priced under what we had for an approval. There is a God! He's smiling down on our family this week! We got the house and have never been so happy! We don't feel one iota bad about leaving RF. Ellsworth could fit the bill for such towns as you were reading about, but doesn't have such a set up of incentives. Your story ,gives me an idea ,to put it to the city council there once we are settled in. Keep doing the Lord's work, K, you're inspiring me with your news! PS- sorry this is so long. Hugs to P! :)

I love baseball too and am disgusted by the disparity in the salaries and that a family can’t even attend a game these days unless they have hundreds of dollars to blow on one. I know my family is getting tired of me saying "Kathleen said this..." constantly. 1. THANK YOU for raising the pay issue for Minor League baseball players!! My son works on the production crew for the TN Smokies (Double A for the Cubs)and I can attest that these teams are SOOO fun to watch, the staff work their tails off, and the players deserve higher wages. C'mon Robby - give the players more money! 2. What happened to your finger?? Was this a slot machine injury?? Inquiring termites want to know!!

When I met my husband I pointed out that to us, the difference between a good tip and a great tip might be 2 or 3 bucks as a percent but says so much to the staffer involved. Our favorite tip was in Austria when it wasn't clear if gratuities were included. We were in a beer garden and the waiter was great until you heard a loud crash, and the only other waitress left the building! After that service sucked as this poor guy tried to cover the whole place by himself. We decided to tip him the normal 15% (at the time) anyway and this guy literally BOWED to us! it was 60 shillings, or $6 US at the time. as soon as we walked out the door, we said "we overtipped". We asked the concierge at the hotel how much of a tip do you leave if the service was great, and he said it was very kind of us, but the tip was already included, so 1 or 2 shillings would be fine. LOL we left him 60! But for $6 when will i ever get someone to bow at the waist??? Not in NY! I know we took a shitty night for him and made it worth it. Happy to do it, even if thinks we were dopey americans! I've never done waitstaff and I appreciate the people that do. I was always a desk nerd.

We went to Scotland in April. On the way home, customs in Seattle my daughter was stopped and asked if she had anything to declare. She said no. Okay… here in Philly, we pronounce Wilkes Barre like this… wilks bear, then a slight ‘uh’. Not sure that’s accurate, but that’s what I have always heard here in Philadelphia. Hope this helps, I’m sure another PA Termite knows better.
