All kinds of great stuff on old videotapes (...and they said those tapes deteriorate after 15 years...looks fine after 40 though). It's a shame so much history has been tossed. Thanks for recovering and posting this

This must have been from ‘85. She was ranked No. 5 in the summer of 1984, and was seeded 5th at the 1984 US Open. By the end of the year she was ranked 10th, once the points from the Australian Open final dropped off in Dec ‘84. It’s interesting to hear the talk of it “coming together” for her, as she would play for only about two more years, and never at the level she achieved prior to this interview. She did okay in 1985. In March, she beat Evert in the VS Championships, before losing in the QF to Rinaldi. She went deep in some smaller events, but lost 2R at Wimbledon (to Savchenko) and 4R at US Open (to Mandlikova, the year she won it). Continued kind of the same form in 1986, spent the year ranked in the teens. Her highlight was her only win over Navratilova, but she was typically losing to the very players she seemed dismissive of in this interview. After the 1986 US Open, she played only two events between Sept 1986 - June 1987. After playing the 2nd half of 1987, her singles career was pretty much over; she competed in about a dozen more events before hanging it up in 1991.

as they talked about "last year - march 1984- you were ranked 5" so it seems the itw took place in 1985

Seems like this interview may have taken place before Martina & Shriver became an invincible doubles pair. Kathy Jordan-Anne Smith as a doubles pair waned when Martina-Shriver took over by 1983-4?

12:00 "Since December of '82" and "it's been a couple years" so likely the year is 1984-1986.

Quite a shady comment about Chris.

Kathy's somewhat right, though... her attacking game is full of imagination and angles and finesse; while Chrissy just stood on the baseline like a machine. If an attacker plays well, they should win. But, unfortunately, an attacking game is much more difficult and high-risk; whereas Chrissy is just playing the safest shot every time, waiting for a mistake... and too many times, nerves and just human error, means the safe, boring player comes out on top.

@@charlesvorones3612your comment is just as shady as the original one made that you responded to. Chris didn’t just hit the safest shot. She would bomb net attackers and out-wit them with disguise. Kathy’s game did alert Evert to Chrissie’s vulnerability on the court. 17-3 record with Chris.Beating Evert 3 x puts Kathy in a unique list of players with 3 wins over Evert. One out of 6 was Kathy’s win chance with Chris , higher than most other players.

Her way of speaking reminds me of Billie Jean King.

Great all-around player. Such a shame that both men and women have almost dispensed with volleying. Now, it's first person with a chest-high forehand wins the point. I don't know how anyone can argue that JUST baseline play, with winners that come from power, instead of outmaneuvering your opponent in a variety of shots, is more interesting to watch.

She is very humble and not impressed with herself.
