Kathy’s Breast Cancer Journey

After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, Kathy Gale was feeling overwhelmed. “You don't know what to do. I mean you got the cancer diagnosis within itself is just not good and then you have you start thinking about how am I going to do all this?”
She was unable to work, and bills were pilling up. That’s when she met medical social worker Allison Selbee. “She’s wonderful she’s just wonderful,” said Gale. “I can’t say enough about her.”
Medical social workers at the Lee Health Cancer Institute help connect patients to community resources to ensure they get the care they need. “The four most common barriers that I like to address are housing, transportation, finances, and insurance, because those are some of the bigger components that are going to prevent or delay care,” said Selbee.
“She went through every avenue, she looked up every possible grant or help I could get, and we spent literally hours together,” said Gale. “And then if it wasn't in her office, it was on the phone.”
“When you don't have to worry about working as much through treatment, you can really focus on your own body, and your own health, and your own healing,” said Selbee.
After completing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, Gale’s prognosis is positive. “I try and stay positive because after this, hopefully we can just go back to a normal life,” she said. You can learn more by visiting leehealth.org/cancer.
