This was at the 1967 Monterey Pop festival, so the Who was one of many acts on that stage. Though the Who often destroyed their instruments in their early years, this was the one of their fist exposures to an American audience, and the stage hands certainly weren't prepared for it. The Who wasn't the only act to destroy their instruments; this was the same venue where Jimi Hendrix infamously lit his guitar on fire at the end of his performance.

@@88wildcat Joe Walsh, always the joker, and I love him for it. When I was learning to play, I found a video of Joe teaching me how to set up my guitar. At one point he says, "Guitars are like women. They have moods, and you gotta know how to treat them." And then he sticks his big clown face in the camera and says, "And if you don't think guitars are like women, you go and ask B.B. King about Lucille!"

This was normal thing for the Who from 1967. I love the reaction from the grand daughter in complete shock with her mother, but grandma was enjoying it because she grew up around that era. they first did it in 1964 at the Railway Hotel.

Their drummer, Keith Moon, was crazy. Their guitar player, Pete Townsend, said that he suffered a partial hearing loss when Moon put fireworks on stage and didn't tell anyone. They went off right by Townsends head. Allegedly, "Animal" from The Muppets was inspired by Moon. There's a great book about him called "Full Moon".

The Who are a great British rock band formed in London in 1964. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century & have sold over 100 million records worldwide. Keith Moon is the show......the only drummer in a rock band that captures all my attention live............just amazing of a manic show he puts on while keeping the time tight...........

I think it started when the drummer Keith Moon auditioned for the band. He was a hyper active terror and by the time the audition was over he had destroyed his drum kit so It became their thing to smash their equipment. Keith is famous for all kinds of stunts and got the band Banned from Holiday Inns. There is a long list of things. It also includes Joe Walsh do stunts with him. Joe Walsh quote ..." The Most terrifying thing that happened to me was that Keith Moon decided he liked me.".

The Who (UK) became the first rock band to perfect the art of destroying instruments as part of their energetic live shows in the mid-1960s. So yes they did it was sort of a statement for times.Cheers and stay safe.

Pete was genuinely an art student who studied under Gustav Metzger who was the founder of the ‘auto destructive art’ movement. Pete’s given at least 20 different reasons why this started, but it was a regular thing from early in their careers.

One of the great Rock Anthems of all time, it was another great performance of it by them, my favorite audio live cut is them doing it at Live at Leeds, it is a 15 minute jam that evolves into snippets of other great WHO tunes and has an amazing crescendo a few times in the jam that gives utter chills. Please listen to it sometime, you will freak! Great stuff, enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶🔥

First time I saw them was n the early 70s Moon started it by kicking his bass drum into the middle of the stage then Townsend destroyed a Gibson Lee Paul guitar, all the while Daltrey twirled his mike and Entwistle was projecting amazing bass solos into Townsend's feedback. You don't forget the scene playing out or the huge sound they conjured. I saw why some say they were the best live Rock Band ever in their prime. Saw them 6 times, the first was the very best but they were always great, right there with Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath for best bands I ever saw.

The ruffles on the front of Pete Townshend’s shirt were called a jabot, they were very popular from the 1600s to the early 1800s and they had a revival in the late 60s-mid 70s with the Peacock Revolution! I regularly wear one made of lace because I love that late 60s dandy look.

They used to destroy their instruments in their early years. I think Pete Townshend (the guitarist) used to repair his guitar after the show and he probably had a special guitar(s) just for live shows. I have read an interview of him where he tells that at some point he just stopped (mostly) doing that because he didn't want to destroy his precious instrument anymore. The drummer Keith Moon is another story. There is a video in youtube of Alice Cooper telling something like: when you hear rock stars doing all kinds of bad stuff (destroying hotel rooms etc.) usually only 10 % of it is true but when you hear about things Keith Moon has done, everything is true and you only have heard 10 % of it.

You need to see their performance on the Smothers Brothers show where way too much gunpowder got put into Moons bass drum. The reason all of them went deaf lol. The instrument destruction became an every show event and a lot of people went just to watch that.

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys live in at the Hershey Park arena years ago and the opening act was Robert Plant. Was such an awesome show. The opening act by Robert Plant went for like an hour then another 2 for the main show with The Who and another hour for the Encore act.

I seem to remember a story that Pete Townshend told back in the day, about how the whole destroying of instruments on stage etc,. came about. Apparently, The Who were playing at a small venue in the early 60's and Pete was jumping around as he did, and the guitar was accidentally thrust through the low roof of the stage set up. So Pete who was rather embarrassed about this continued to thrash about with his guitar, and ended up smashing it up on the stage, as though it was part of the act. And so a legend was born....

It was part of The Who shows in the middle to late 60s for Townsend and Moon to smash their instruments. Here is some of the history. The Who (UK) became the first rock band to perfect the art of destroying instruments as part of their energetic live shows in the mid-1960s. Guitarist Pete Townshend kicked off the crowd-pleasing ritual during a performance at The Railway Tavern in Harrow, London, in 1964 when he “finished off” his Rickenbacker after accidentally breaking the neck of the guitar on the venue’s low ceiling, an event Rolling Stone magazine later included in their “50 moments that changed the history of rock ‘n’ roll”. Drummer Keith Moon also became a renowned instrument-slayer, most notably in 1967 when he detonated a kit loaded with explosives at the conclusion of The Who’s performance of “My Generation” on the US TV variety show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The resulting blast embedded cymbal shrapnel in Moon’s arm, singed Townshend’s hair and is reported to have contributed to the guitarist’s long-term hearing impairment.

Great reaction, yes this was a typical ending to their performances. The drummer Keith Moon was nicknamed ' Moon the Loon' Amazing talent. The original tv show CSI and 2 spinoffs csi Miami and csi New York all used Who songs for their theme." Who are you" "Baba O'Riley" and " Won't get fooled again"

All the destruction was part of their show during that era. The television show was called "The Smothers Brothers Show" which Keith, Pete and Roger, " set the show on fire and is generally refereed to as "Explosive" and is also on KZbin. You need to check it out.

I think that this is some of the first songs from my early teenage years,at early 70s. When I heard this from radio and reliased that I do not need to listen music genres from parents,there is music also for me! Other memory is when I got casette player and bought first C-casette, "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath.Also remember when my mother came to my room and told me lower down that terrible sound what is not music...She did not understood that it was music to my generation.

The "fluffy thing"? 😅😂 At 1967's Monterey Pop Festival, the Who and Jimi Hendrix were arguing backstage about who'd follow who, and after losing the coin toss or whatever, Hendrix said, "Fine, but I'm pulling out all the stops(a phrase drawn from the organ, which has multiple "stops", yielding different sounds)." Good as his word, he set his guitar on fire at the end of a mind-blowing, legendarily virtuosic performance. The Who had been doing the auto-destruct act, explaining it was 'art', though it arose from an accident compounded by frustration. Big fun. 😂🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

The Who not only had a tendency to destroy their instruments (there's a famous picture that ran in Rolling Stone of Pete Townshend with his guitar held over head, ready to smash into the stage, with the caption "This Guitar Has Seconds To Live") but when they were starting out, had a tendency to steal guitars. Pete told about the times wen they would go into a local music shop, stand around like they were going to buy something, then grab a guitar off the wall & yell to the cashier "We'll pay you next Tuesday!" and run. The story about this particular show is that The Who & Jimi Hendrix, more or less friendly rivals, were kind of trash talking each other backstage- nothing serious, just enough to get under each other's skin slightly- and each act decided on their own to try to upstage the other. Eric Burdon of The Animals & War- who played Monterey (this concert)- remarked that while both The Who & Hendrix trashed their instruments, The Who's set was like a violent rape, while Hendrix's was like an erotic sacrifice. I saw them in Buffalo at the Melody Fair in North Tonawanda around 1969. I had a blind date with a gorgeous secretary from South Buffalo. I believe Cat Stevens was on first, great set, got a drink at Intermission, then the WHO came on, did a couple of quieter songs. like Magic Bus, then Townshend turned around, set his amps at MAX 10 and slid across the stage and did the chords to this song first. It was probably 50 times louder than this video, and my date put her hands over her ears and screamed so loud. I had to take her home, it's my story and I am sticking to it!!

Yes - entirely normal for the Who in the 60's and 70's. I'm sure I've hear Pete Townsend (lead guitar) describe it as 'auto-destructive art' - its a thing - it has its own Wikipedia page. One thing you didn't mention was Roger Daltrey's stutter - he doesn't usually sing with a stutter. He was mimicking the effects of 'speed', an (illegal) form of amphetamine, popular in the 60's. I'd also recommend their 'Won't get fooled again' from 78, live at Shepperton Studios - not as destructive, but still masses of energy and a brilliant performance. If you want to meditate on the 'hope I die before I get old line', try their set from the 2015 Glastonbury festival - 50 years later, but I don't think they're feeling old yet!

I find it funny that people reacting today don't know who The Who is because when I started listening to music in the late 70s early 80s The Who was the third biggest band in the world after only the long defunct Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. The Who was a very good band in the 60s that shot into the stratospheres in the 70s (really starting in 69 with their rock opera Tommy). Who's Next, Quadrophenia, and Who Are You are all rock masterpieces (they did one other album in the 70s which was not a masterpiece). Unfortunately the string ended with the drummer drinking himself to death. Their state show was legendary with Daltrey swinging his microphone like a lasso, Townsend with his windmill guitar playing, Moon just going wild on the drums and Entwistle stoically not moving a muscle that was not essential to playing the bass. But anger also drove the band. (Townsend has said he was abused as a child, and Daltry was a barroom brawler). Initially that played out in their smashing guitars and drums (again not Entwistle). Later it leaked into the lyrics, Tommy is actually kind of dark in places. But they really took off when Townsend figured out how to get the anger into the music. Behind Blue Eyes quietly seethes with anger. Townsend wrote it about himself, but Daltry thought it was about Daltry. In Quadrophenia the singer is angry with his parents for not giving him anything to be legitimately angry about. They did continue with a new drummer (well new to them he was actually a contemporary of theirs) but never again reached the incredible heights they hit in the 70s. But they do have an album worth of great songs from the 60s as well.

I always enjoy your reaction videos. Peter Townshend was known for smashing his guitar at the end of some performances. I don't know when he started doing this but this but this is an old video. So maybe the crew wasn't prepared. I saw The Who back in the mid '70s at Anaheim Stadium, California. It was festival seating so we camped out in line in the parking lot the night before. It turned out to be a hot day so lots of girls in bikinis. I spread my sleeping bag out on the grass of the baseball field. There was a guy who did a high dive off the scaffolding onto one of those large inflatable bags. There was an aerial show of planes right over the crowd where the planes did stalls, etc. A little unsettling, I thought. There were other acts before The Who. The Who put on a great show. They did My Generation. I was glad I got to see Keith Moon on the drums. He died of a drug overdose a couple of years later. The concert ended at night and we were all exhausted by then. But we had the resiliency of youth on our side.

You might want to check out the movie Tommy. It's a rock opera with many rockers in it written by Pete Townsend, lead guitarist in The Who. Has Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Elton John and others. There is not one spoken work in the whole movie!

They just regularly trashed their gear at the end of a show :-) I didn't really understand this until I joined a band and at one point in a rehearsal we got so worked up that if I had the budget I would would have destroyed the place with my guitar. It makes no sense, it's just an emotional thing :-)

This was the Monterrey Pop festival, the very first one. Pete Townshend was a superb tunesmith/songwriter and he smashed his guitar out of frustration. So he said. Then the smashups came to be expected when they played. It got pretty expensive so he would shop for used guitars prior to concerts. The Who were one of the most influential and talented rock bands. Keith Moon was the gold standard for drummers in the 60's and 70's although he was unstable and self-destructive. The style here was kind of "Mod", a UK thing. The counterpart to the Mods were the Rockers. The Mods affected Victorian fashions, the Rockers were like American "greasers", slicked back hair, pack of L&M's rolled up in the sleeve of their short-sleeved T-shirt. Hope I'm painting a vivid picture :) The Who never went for the whole hippie peace/love/dove thing, they were too explosive and intense. Check out My Generation at Woodstock a couple years later. During the destruction routine, Roger Daltrey would often smash his mic against Keith Moon's cymbals, as well as toss it up and down. Because this was the Monterey Pop Festival, the band was using the festival's sound system, not their own, and most Americans weren't fully aware yet of what The Who's act was all about. So when the smashing started, sound man Wally Heider (who also owned an excellent recording studio used by many famous artists) ordered the festival roadies to save the mics from certain death and destruction. This was actually a potentially dangerous thing to do, because Pete Townshend would often get himself worked up for gigs - he once beat up a policeman who came onstage at the Fillmore East in New York to inform the audience that there was a fire next door.

This video might be from the Monterrey Pop Festival in which Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire at the end because he knew The Who always destroyed their instruments at the end of their shows, and he didn't want to be outdone. The Who was the greatest live band ever! Check out their live performance of Won't Get Fooled Again from Shepperton Studios in 1978. It's probably the greatest live performance of all time!

Lulu , you could have some real fun with your Nana , there is the British band The Who , and the Canadian band The Guess Who . Lead singer Rogor Daltrey guest starred in several episodes of Highlander the Series , back in the nineties . That was the typical show ending for the band . They were " bad boys " compared to the Beatles . Every body had their signature thing back then .

Your faces when they started trashing their instruments! Priceless! Yes, they used to do it sometimes but not all the time. I think not actually upset, more a case of being totally wired. They were part of the Mods youth movement, whose drug of choice was amphetamines, that may have been a factor lol. I think the guys grabbing the mic stands were from the venue, as opposed to the band’s crew lol. Drummer Keith Moon was one of the most extreme of rock wild men.

The WHO emerged out of The Detours. Pete Townshend smashing his Guitar was a regular part of their performance back in the day. It got expensive, but that was the way Pete "expressed" himself. Keith Moon, the Drummer, was also naturally destructive, he had a very bad reputation with a lot of Hotels. For more proof, check out their performance of "My Generation" on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which starts off the film about The WHO called "The Kids Are Alright". Next do "A Quick One (While He's Away)" from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

The story goes, that Jimi Hendrix and Who guitarist Pete Townshend at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 where this performance took place, argued back stage on which band would take the stage first, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or The Who. It came down to a coin flip back stage; with Pete Townshend winning the coin flip and The Who taking the stage first. This performance at the Monterey Pop Festival was The Who's breakthrough in America eventhough they had been a band since around 1962. The Who made sure that America would always remember them with the bashing of the instruments and all the pyro and smoke. Ahh, but Hendrix wasn't to be outdone. When the American born Hendrix took the stage after The Who, Hendrix who had fame in England made sure that American audiences wouldn't forget him. When Hendrix ended his show at the pop festival, he lit his guitar on fire and sacrificed it to the rock gods, simulated having sex with his guitar, and then he also smashed up his guitar and amps. Both performances catapulted both acts to world stardom. Now you need to react to Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival. It was legendary. Thanks beautiful ladies for the reaction.

This was the Who's performance shtick from back in the day! If they had to do three performances in a day, Pete will repair his broken guitar in time for the next show. John, the bassist,never smashed his bass.

The Who was famous not just for their amazing music and shows, but also for the fact that they smashed up their equipment at the end of their shows in their early years. It's pretty established that they were so far in debt that if their rock opera "Tommy" hadn't been the hit that it was they would have probably face bankruptcy. The amount of money they spent on equipment was a part of their financial woes. Plus, they managed to get some of the worst record deals of their era, at least among the top tier groups like they were.

Yes, Pete Townshend used to destroy his guitar on a regular basis, not every time, but very often. For this show, they destroyed everything, because they made a bet with Jimi Hendrix about who would destroy the guitar first, Hendrix lost the bet, so he had to play right after The Who, but he still managed to steal the show, Watch Hendrix's Wild thing from the same Monterey show to see why. The crowd was shocked, it was a peace & love hippie show, so they didn't expect a violent thing like this. The made a whole movie about this 3 days show. Can't remember the title, but the show was Monterey Festival 1967, maybe look for this title, if you want to watch it. Have a nice day & until next time. I've listened to the Who since the late sixties. The drummer is Keith Moon i consider the second best behind John Bonham everone as there opinion though which is ok .Another one is Tony Thompson of Power Station is a beast sadly they are no longer with us.......
