Actually the name of the group is Question Mark & The Mysterians. The lead guitarist, Robert Balderrama has his own jazz band called Robert Lee Revue. 96 Tears came out in 1966 and it was their only hit record.

Did Balderrama play with Joe "King" Carrasco at some point? If he did, I saw him in a small bar in Tucson in the early 80s. The lead guitar player told us he used to be with ? and the Mysterians.

They were the opening act for Grand Funk Railroad. They had the same manager as Grand Funk Railroad.

Mel Schacher, the bass guitar player for Grand Funk Railroad, was the bass guitarist for Question Mark And The Mysterians (1968-1969) when he was 17 years old. This song came out in 1966 so he wasn't the bass guitarist at the time of the original release. In 1969, Mel joined GFR. Same manager, same Bass guitarist, opening act for GFR... definitely a connection between the 2 bands.

The original was from 1966, this was recorded in 1998. Their song "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" was a top 20 hit for Smash Mouth in 1998.

There is a KZbin video of a concert on August 11, 2019 in Bay City, Michigan with Question Mark and The Mysterians performing for 47 minutes. ? is 74 years old in this concert and never stops moving. He is moving kind of slow but never stops. It really doesn't get good till 19:30 into the video where "96 Tears" starts. At 24:30 they switch to "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. At 38:30 they go back to "96 Tears". Eventually a couple of old groupies get on stage and dance until about 45 minutes. It says in the video title that it has the original band members. This version only reached Number 37 in the UK Chart in 1966. The Stranglers had a hit with it in 1990 and took it to Number 17 😊

? & the Mysterians were a garage rock band in the 60's. "96 Tears" was their biggest hit in 1966. They are considered a one-hit wonder. But they released a few other songs such as "I Need Somebody" & "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby".
