The judgement that Hopkins defamed Monroe was ultimately highly subjective, and Monroe's financial backers and guarantors were in all probability The Guardian (who've written far worse things about people whose politics they don't share?) It should not have gone to court. And it had a consequence of quelling debate.

shutting down debate slows down human progress, insular societies that lock at all forms of dissent regresses intellectually and technologically. Hearing and arguing different points of view advances any field, just as athletes improve via competing with other athletes. Societies that encourage and allow competing arguments evolve much faster. For anyone who disagrees I have a one way ticket to North Korea awaiting you just so you can see what happens to a society that shuts down all debate.

This has been further supplanted by lawful precedent in 2020 by 2 judges at the Court of Appeal stated the following: Presiding over a case in the Court of Appeal, Lord Justice Bean and Mr Justice Warby said: 'Freedom only to speak inoffensively is not worth having. ' They added that 'free speech encompasses the right to offend, and indeed to abuse another'. This is now lawful precedent and anyone arrested or prevented in anyway from hold an opinion, thought or vocal display that may cause offence is permitted by law. However, let me stress the differential of Offence v Criminal. You will still be punished if you state something that is hateful and directed to incite harm. Calling someone fat is offensive; saying all fat people should be denied food and starved to death is unlawful.

That’s the entire point, you debate everything.. this is the Oxford Union they’ve debated everything for hundreds of years. Debate and talking is how we come to rational answers. You sound too simple. The govt passed a law in the uk which means universities are liable if they don’t let speakers speak. That’s why you won’t see these debates hardly in the USA but you do here. If activists shut down talks the university is fined and that quickly made them up security.

Hey Babatunde, excellent commentay sir. I just found this vid/your channel when I was looking back at the recent shameful debate at Oxford Union about Israel. The way the opposition was treated may have been the worst in their history. They did not even post the speech by Mosab Hasan Yousef on their channel despite previously made agreements. But thankfully fellow opposition speakerJonathan Sacerdoti has posted the audio of it on his channel. You might want to give fellow opposition speakers Joseph Haddad and Natasha Hausdorff a watch/review as well. The backlash is far from over imo so follow the news about that shameful debable. I just subbed and will definitely try to watch your other reviews too if I can find the time.

Being exposed to ideas that counter your own does strengthen your ideas, sometimes even changes your ideas. But that's not what these people want, they don't want to think ideas, they want to be told what ideas to think.
