I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2009 so Silver Linings hit close to home for me. For Bradley Cooper to come at it with such respect and compassion is beautiful to see and I hope it gives other people who struggle with BP some light. It's a very misunderstood disorder but it just makes me realize how important it is to be thankful for what I have, the people that I meet, the life lessons to learn, and the quiet moments in between. Blessings to everyone

I can tell when he cries, he is thinking about his father and himself when he was younger, meaning he was a trouble young man/teenager and he's thinking about the affection his father had for him. I think Robert De Niro misses his father so much

Great interview! I did see it, almost 10 years ago! The movie was amazing! Bradley got to ask Robert De Niro a question at Inside the Actor's Studio. Then, he got to work with him, a few times! How awesome is that!

Wonderful interview. I'm so impressed with Katie - her presence, insight and humor - asking Bob De Niro "are you crazy?" to have a baby at his age. And Bob's response, the baby is pure joy! Loved the interaction between the actors and the director. Loved hearing about the motivation for the story as well. Very touching to see. Thank you.

Absolutely beautiful I've never seen RDN seem so vulnerable. You can tell seeing his son go through life with these struggles has touched and softened what was once a very verile and macho character.

it's real. i'd nvr seen him cry like that. & since he's among my most loved actors, i couldn't stand to see him cry. he couldn't even talk. usually ive seen him juz nod his head repeatedly/smile w his eyes half-closed throughout interviews, but this time he was having a much deeper emotional reaction.

The difference between normal emotions and bipolar is that everything turns up to 11. The highs are manic as if you're on a drug. The lows are crushing. Usually with no reason or warning. And it can be a very quick, regular cycle for some people.

I have seen videos of De Niro receiving awards like the AFI and he really gets emotional..He looks tough because of the movies he has made and all this but i think he is sensitive just like us..And i think when you grow old you see things differently and as a father that he is i believe he relates to the feelings of David O.Russell and what he goes through..

Its definitely more drama, but it is based around a lot of comedic elements. It helps to see it with the right audience. When I watched it, the audience I watched it with had me laughing with them at moments where I might have only just smiled to myself. Thats the moviegoing experience for you!

It's obvious to me that De Niro is a guy who keeps a lot in, emotionally speaking. He doesn't always show it and can mask his emotions quite convincingly because it is how one copes. He is an introverted personality in a very extroverted profession. But that is what makes him so potent as an actor. You don't have to be articulate and domineering to be a good actor. He is in touch with the human spirit, human flaws and the natural things, which becomes more apparent in someone as they age.

i think im gonna make a lousy comment, but i say it anyway. If its were any other actor, i probably wont care much, but when its Robert DeNiro (one of the greatest living actors today, & a VERY private actor) gets emotional & cries on public TVshow, there 2 possibilities in my head 1.He's really vulnerable & a goodman or 2. He's really a good actor. Any which, I love him still and adore him.

Great interview. I wish someone like David O Russell would now do a film about living with anxiety and panic disorder. It can be equally as hard as living with bi-polar disorder. Sometimes, the two are intertwined. Sometimes the severe anxiety triggers depression. More about all mental ticks (I hate the term "mental illness") needs to be brought out in the open.

I know, but in another post someone mentioned how the director usually pulls stunts like this and could have told bob to cry backstage. He is an actor after all, he can cry on que. Just prior to bob crying they were talking about how he cried on que in the movie, then less than a minute later hes crying during the interview....something is fishy. I know its an emotional subject and deniro doesnt usually cry, but something struck me as odd when he had his little moment, haha, no big deal though.

Note that there is, indeed, mislabeling of symptoms but that doesn't mean that all people with psychological symptoms are mislabeled or wouldn't be better by taking known, safe drugs, therapy, etc. In fact some psychological "problems" can become strengths, given the right set of circumstances and choices.Einstein is but one of many examples where Asberger's worked to his and the world's benefit. But thinking that everyone should be like you ignores important differences&u aren't anyone's example.
