Katie Melua - Concert Under The Sea (October 2nd 2006)

It was the stuff of dreams or, perhaps, acid trips: Katie Melua singing Nine Million Bicycles on a stage 303 metres below the sea.
Convinced to perform on the North Sea floor by a gas drilling company celebrating its 10th birthday, the singer set a Guinness World record for the deepest underwater concert ever performed.
Now a documentary of the strange event, which took place last October, has been released on DVD.
And what an event it was. Melua, 22, and her band underwent rigorous safety training while 22 tonnes of equipment was transported by 16 helicopters and three supply ships to the rig and then the whole lot had to be moved to the bottom of the sea.
Then there was the performance. We're guessing the chart-topping singer had never played to an audience quite like the Statoil staff. Kitted out in hard hats and orange overalls, a few swayed and tapped their feet, while others, unable to abandon their duties, continued working through the concert.
Katie Melua - The Documentary Film: Concert Under The Sea is released on Monday June 28.

I worked more than 9 years in the world of drilling. I made the survival courses as seen in the movie. I traveled by helicopter to reach my place of work on the rigs. I'm a fan of Kate Melua and ... This is offshore life this is how it is, this is what we do its no acid trip this is what it is really like - i am impressed that a star would have enough guts to do the offshore training which is the hardest part apart from the chopper ride.

Katie Melua shows she's a top-drawer songwriter and singer, comparable to Taylor Swift in that regard. Combines a pop sensibility with a little blues and jazz in her songs. And it is so rare to listen to a performance that is so clear and feels so intimate. Love her inspired cover of Canned Heat's "On the Road Again"; I see she also performs their hit, "Goin' Up the Country", in other performances. Poor forlorn Jan at the end ... lol.

17:10 as well as various other parts... the soundtrack is VERY "Deus Ex Human Revolution", there's definitely the odd synth patch which was used in HR, but that whole sound reminds me SO much of Tai Yung Medical, right back 5 years before its release! I can't find the musical credits for this, but I reckon it's Michael McCann, who licensed some tracks to a TV production company (and therefore went uncredited).

Easy we have cranes and all the kind of mechanical stuff to do what we have to do a piano is so light weight, offshore there are many kinds of mechanical lifts and in a void like the one Katie is in its easy - its hard to imagine for people that don't work offshore what we can achieve
