Hi Katie. Just wanted to tell you how much I'm enjoying your videos and blog. Your enthusiasm and the pleasure you take in making your allotment your own special place is fun to watch. I don't have a garden of my own so watching you transform your allotment into such a pretty, vintage-inspired garden has been a treat. Thank you!

Hello and thank you so very much! I don't have my own garden too, which explains why I'm going a little overboard with my allotment. It is my happy place and I love it, I'm glad it can spread it's happiness to you as well :)

Thank you, it turned out better then I thought it would! It's still a little rustic and wonky in places but I think that's why I like it so much :)

Very nice archway. Not much hazel available in my area. I have used up most of my alder saplings ...but now I'll be on the hunt for more. I want to build an archway as a entrance to what I call my wilderness area. Thanks for the video. Always puts a smile on my face.

Hi Katie, what an awesome arch! So much more interesting than the bamboo canes that appear over this green and pleasant land at this time of year. I'm really looking forward to seeing it covered with the peas and beans. That's the beauty of building your own structures you can make it to suit you. That's why I had to build my own Polytunnel with a 7 feet doorframe, no ducking for me and I've an inch to spare! Great video once again and thanks for sharing, just off to find some hazel!!!! John

Hello John and thank you, I'm still surprised that I made it all by myself! I also can't wait to walk through it once its covered with crops :) Exactly what I thought! Plus I like the wonky handmade look, gives things more character (or thats what I keep telling myself!) Thank you again, Katie

Hi Katie, I think you did a really good job of the archway. It's good of you to share your videos as I wouldn't have known how to do that without researching it & that's not the same as watching someone doing it. For the time being I'm using my back garden to grow fruit & veg & flowers in a way that utilises the limited space I have. I am currently 3rd on the allotment waiting list so it's a temporary solution until I get the word that one becomes available. I just put my broad beans, yellow beans, runner beans and sugar snap peas out. They are all of the dwarf variety and I've planted them in a large trough type container. Just waiting for some sunshine - had enough rain for now. I love your style and enjoy watching what you're up to. Looking forward to the next instalment & seeing your pond. Take care & Thank you. Samantha.

Hi Katie, you might find that your archway becomes a living archway because Hazel roots easily when just stuck in the ground. I'm going to film Hazel igloos in a local Primary School so, if you wish, you can see how that works. I intend to make a Hazel or Willow canopy in my garden at a new seating area so I'll be doing videos about that too. You are making that plot something very special. Best Wishes, Brendan.
@oldorchardgarden
@oldorchardgarden 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the warning Brendan. I really don't want it to go wild so I will probably stop it growing by chopping unwanted branches off if any appear. There is very limited space up my allotment so I need it all for growing really, otherwise I would like a living willow teepee! Katie

Hi, the archway looks good, I've grown borlotti beans before they're not as reliable as runner beans here in Yorkshire but you can't get a glut of haricot beans so there's no waste.

Really love your videos and think this archway looks amazing- definitely the best one I've seen so far! I'm really interested in making one but really can't think of where to get the wood. I live in the North West and I'm new to gardening so very unsure of what wood I can use, and where exactly I can get it from for the cheapest price. A few people have said bamboo but I'm not sure I'd be able to bend it over the top like Katie's is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!:-) Great videos Katie... can't wait to see your garden this spring and summer!

Checking in two years later as I am re-building my archway! We used beech would last time but it was in quite poor condition so wasn't expecting it to last long! It got blown over a few months ago and we are now re-building it with fresh hazel from our hazel tree that is finally big enough to chop😁

@oldorchardgarden

Hello and thank you, I used hazel on the top. The entire archway is made from hazel, apart from the twine of course! :)
@qwibles
@qwibles 10 жыл бұрын
If you had longer hazel branch or more for the top one you could have doubled then up (or folded them back on themselves) then alternatively weave the branches on the top and possibly the row below, then inserted the end of the overhead loop in the hole's formed, it would have saved you using wire.. just a thought the next time you build one. Looks good though.... P.S. Nice to see an archway taller people won't hit their head's on... however maybe you'll bump your head on the hanging pumpkins ?!?. Like Stainless Steel Fork and Spade

Thanks for your advice :) I am completely new to this area of expertise so it was a fun and interesting experience for me to make my own archway all by myself. Theres probably a few things I would have done definately but you live and learn and I am still really happy with it which is the main thing I guess. Haha probably, although the pumpkins will be mini so hopefully they won't hurt! :)

Could you please explain what an allotment is actually? I've watched many videos of lovely gardens all called allotments, but here in the U.S. I've never heard of allotments. I'm assuming it's a form of communal garden, but do you own that piece of land? How does this work? Great arch by the way!
