The more Justices Alito and Thomas remain unchallenged, they will continue conducting themselves in ways that call into question their abilities to keep their thumbs off the scales of justice. Their actions (that we have learned of thus far) are not what is expected of a justice serving on the highest court of the land, and it continues to erode Americans' confidence in the impartiality of the Supreme Court. I personally think of the two of them as sleeping giants that have been awakened and emboldened now that the Supreme Court consists of a majority of Conservatives who seem hellbent on upending many of the freedoms we now realize we have taken for granted all these many years. It is incumbent on congress to pass ethics laws to keep these rogue Supreme Court Justices in check before they completely destroy our faith and confidence in our highest court in the land.

Every 6 years a Justice should have to come up for review before the Congress and be approved by the sitting President before they are given another 6 year term. The constitution states that Supreme Court justices “ shall hold their offices during good behavior.” This means that the justices hold office as long as they choose, and can only be removed from office by impeachment. It’s obvious that Alito and Thomas have not been exhibiting good behavior. It’s time Congress, it’s time.

After 18 years, Supreme Court justices should be required to stop hearing cases and join a SCOTUS ethics board as part of the court for the rest of their life or until they retire. The SCOTUS justices should roll off the main Court every 2 years with a new justice appointed. If someone dies/retires early, that justice is only replaced for the remainder of their term. Yesterday while on my way to a family picnic traffic was slowed down for about a mile on a 6 lane highway. Accident, collision, road work? No - on the overpass people had hung several very large and smaller American flags upside down and were holding various signs and waving. Not a single backed up vehicle tooted their horn in support. I can guess that most other drivers were as irritated as I was by having my cheerful day interrupted and flow of traffic compromised on a busy Saturday afternoon by this display. I fully support the right to protest, but I am so done with the democracy eroding underpinnings of these actions and related propaganda.

Alito's refusal to recuse was extremely disingenuous. There is a clear appearance (at least) of impropriety here. Any reasonable person would assume that a flag (I saw a report the upside down US flag was 20 feet long) flying outside a house represents the views of those who live in the house. He walked by the flag every day, even if he didn't put it up. Moreover, the explanation that it was a response to the neighbor, and Ms. Alito's claim that it's a distress signal are bogus. The argument came later AND how is a distress call a reasonable response? Did she expect the Coast Guard to protect her from the core first amendment speech of her neighbor? Alito needs to recuse from any case related to Jan. 6, but also anything related to elections (e. g., redistricting cases). He must also recuse from any case involving religion, because of the second flag. Thomas from recuse from any case involving Jan. 6 or the 2020 election, because his wife, whom he frequently describes as his "best friend" and with whom he says he "shares everything" was a participant in the insurrection. He should definitely not sit on the case about whether the interference in an official proceeding charge can apply to Jan. 6: his wife would be subject to this law.
