Hi Katie, you are very wise to have the Garmin in Reach Mini2. As someone who covers First Aid for Extreme outdoor sports events I notice that you carry your Garmin attached to your bike. Should you be unfortunate to have an accident while riding you could become separated from your bike by some distance and unable to reach you Emergency device If possible I would suggest for your safety that you try to find a way of having the Garmin with you on your person at all times . All the best wonderful ride and Video .

Another great video thank you. Upside down town signs , It's a campaign by farmers to draw attention to what they say is their increasingly precarious way of life.

It's the best part of travelling alone in whatever form , stepping out of your comfort zone and feeling alone and scared....not listening to all the negatives of why you shouldn't but instead realizing that "courage is not freedom from Fear, its being afraid and continuing on...within this a whole new world opens up that feels so natural and free that you then realize what was all the fuss about ...🙏

The upside-down place names is a farmers protest at the constantly changing bureaucracy imposed on them by government and other agencies. Literally sending their livelihoods and mental state into a topsy-turvy situation hence the topsy-turvy signs :)

Chapeau Katie! Our group crossed paths with you at the top of the iconic Tourmalet. We all couldn’t believe how you were able to ride up the climbs fully loaded in the heat of the day! Awesome effort on a daily basis! It’s great to watch your vlogs unfold of your trip. The decent of the Peyresourde from the crepe house was my fav of the trip, but every climb & descent have views for days. Photos don’t do it justice. Happy cycling. 🚴

You tamed the beast Col du Tourmalet itself like you would take your cat to the vet! And added some more climbing to it going forward.. yeah, that is impressive and thrilling and inspiring. You've got _the heart of a Lion_ Katie K! 🦁 You might have got used to doing back to back, gruelling multiple days events like this but to many of us it still feels awe-inspiring. Ride safe, get some rest; back home, whenever that might be, a lot of people are cheering you on ! 😁😄 😊 👏🙏 = )

Absolutely loving watching your progress on this trip. Very well done. I love the Pyrenees,not as high or snowy as the Alps but I prefer them somehow. The upside down roadsigns were done by the farmers in their dispute with the government about 6 months back. You see them all over France like that. I've got the Garmin 530 and I don't think it has animal in the road warnings on it but the one I use in the van has. They're not live warnings but alerts for animals crossing e.g. where you see the picture of a cow or deer on a road sign. If the 1050 has got live animal alerts, that is impressive.Take care and have fun.

Yay Miss Katie!! You're doing awesome!! I like your videos because they are not so technical and they are enjoyable to watch. I am from Canada and other than the Rocky Mountains, 3000km away from here, we have nothing like that. We are basically trees and rocks!! haha. I cycled during my youth.. did 20 miles a day, back and forth from school. And then on the weekends I would do at least 150 miles, maybe a little bit more. What happened, you ask? Two things.. I got my drivers license and caved into peer pressure and began smoking tobacco. Well, 9 or 10 years ago I quit smoking, but i was dealing with a severe injury to my wrist.. Kien Bocks disease. The lunate bone in my wrist disintegrated!! I was having difficulty leaning on the handle bars of a fairly aggressive bike.. GTR Series 5. So I gave up again, but began walking every day. Then one day last year my knee started to ache whenever I walked, and it would be really sore for 2-3 days afterwards. I started to feel discouraged, because, what am I going to do? I prayed about it and the Lord directed me back to cycling again, but this time around I bought and endurance bike. What a difference!! I am able to ride for 2 - 3 - 4 hours at a time without any problems!! So this spring I bought a Scott Speedster 20 and have been riding it for the spring and early summer. As of late, it is either terribly hot or raining, but I am hoping to get back out in the next couple of weeks..

@@KatieKookaburra Northern Ontario can be a very rugged place. It is kind of hard to explain. We have a level of modernity within the urban areas, but rurally? Where I live, in Elliot Lake, we have all kinds of back roads where I can go for miles and miles without seeing anyone. Many of the roads are paved and in fairly good condition because they see relatively little traffic. Unfortunately, we have very few sheepies to see. Most of the farms are off the main highway and back in boondocks.

It's a bonus to hear that this is a RAID too. I think you said you'll cover all the planning in a video later so I'm looking forward to hearing all about it.... I might plan this for next year. Totally agree with you about the "just do it" - 3 of my 4 trip to the Pyrenees have been solo. If you wait for others to do the things you want to do you may never do them. In Bagneres de Luchon there is another lodge run by an ex pat couple - its called Free Range Chalet. It is a great base for that area of the Pyrenees. That first view of the day is Hautacam and Col de Trammasal (the secret sneaky extra 1.5km that sits on top of the TDF Hautacam finish). Where you crossed the green bridge at about 45seconds - if you go right at the traffic island just up there - it will take you up to Cauterets Cambasque which was a TDF finish in 2023. That said there is a BETTER climb up that section of the valley called Pont D'Espagne. Personally if it was me when climbing Tourmalet from Luz saint Sauvier i would use the Voie Laurent Fignon route instead of the main road - its so much nicer and traffic free. As your climbing Col D'Aspin when you get to Payolle you have a choice the road splits the LH fork is Aspin and over to Arreau, If you take the RH fork it takes you up and over Horquette D'Ancizan which is IMO the prettier more remote climb and it puts you in pretty much the same place the other side of the climb - just the spot for the Peyresourde. Incidentally the Arreau valley is also the place you will find climbs such as Portet, lac de cap de Long, Pla Adet, val Louron Azet. This is the area i want to explore more of in the Pyrenees as i have only scrapped the surface this far over. Town / village names are upside down due to protests. Drinking - 500ml an hour especially if its hot in the mountains is what i find i need. Keep your eye out for the little village taps. They are usually at / near the "Marie" building. It will say "non potable" is its not drinking water other than that your good to go.

EXACTLY Greg. Don't waste opportunities or experiences just because others don't want to go. I also think when you go alone you make way more effort with other people so have a much more varied and rich experience. When we go with friends we tend to stick to talking with just them. Whereas when alone you want to have a chat :) Loved my solo rides. Where shall I ride next???

@Greg.Sutton Ай бұрын
@KatieKookaburra - for me, where's next is such a personal thing. The destination has to mean something and tick that bucket list. I am currently weighing up several choices. 1). Arreau Valley - Pyrenees. 2). Alta Badia - Dolomites 3). Bourg San Maurice - Alps 4). Fjords - Norway. 5). Monuments Routes.
@Greg.Sutton

@KatieKookaburra - for you if you enjoyed this area. I would base yourself at the lodge I recommended yesterday. Pyrenees Cycling Lodge. You could easily fill another week riding climbs in the Argeles valley that you have not done. Spandelles / Tentes / Tromousse / Hautacam / Luz Ardiden / Pont D'Espagne / Cauteret Cambasque / Coraduque / Horquette. There is also a multitude of gravel rides in the valley - including Pic du Midi Bigorre / Montee Baston / Lac de Gliere / Pic du Bergon / Hautacam Gravel / Col de Calibiros / Col de Lier.

I just came back from a tour from Paris to Santiago de Compostella and I dipped down to Donostia/San Sebastian as well. The Pyrenees are beautiful, though some of the climbs are insanely steep and I wasn't always that happy with going down an 18% descent only to have a sharp corner at the bottom and an 18% climb right after again. But I would definitely do it again... just maybe without a fully loaded touring bike. XD

Really enjoying following this trip Katie. As someone who’s coming back to cycling after many years away, it’s really interesting seeing how you use the tech as I ride solo almost all the time and have just bought a 1050 as my first bike computer and starting to figure out what it can do.

Justin, wow.... you got the 1050 as your first bike computer. Well you are going to LOVE it. If you have any questions just ask... :) I am pretty hand with a Garmin so can try and help. Happy cycling Justin

I had the same experience with drinking too little earlier this month riding from Saint Nazaire to Nantes in 30 degrees. I almost had to walk the last climb, really tough lesson to learn!Anyway kudos to you for the trip and the tips!

Placenames are upside down because the farmers are fed up with policies being completely topsy-turvy. The equivalent in french is "tout marche sur sa tête" = everything is walking on its head.

Bigger/long climbs usually easier gradients while shorter-medium are steep p.i.t.a. The big climbs are done now and climbs should hopefully be easier. It is just endurance now next few days.

Katie, it would be great if you do a video explaining the actual pacing strategy on a climb. It is great that the Climb Pro gives the data but how do you use it. Like on a 10km climb you have sections of 5%, 10%, etc. To what power you ride where for what time etc. I found that ClimbPro doesn't help me much as I just suffer the same but I have the anxiety of knowing that so much more is left :) So using it right is very important as using it wrong can be daunting.

As a former vegetarian in my 20’s, my best health & performance is NOW as a mostly carnivore! I found malnutrition was holding me back & causing many problems. My mHR is now the same as it was 30 years ago! Good luck & research Dr Noaks et Al.

Katir, first of all, great content as always. Secondly, the upside down signs are a form of farmer revolt against the government. You will see them all over the country a great form of passive resistance.
