The cyclists' ongoing debate.... Tenerife VS Majorca!
I've been to both this year so compare climbs, gradients, food, cost and weather.
There is footage from both of the trips so you an see which you would prefer.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to Mallorca in November to cycle, I hope the weather is good.

I just got back from a cycling holiday in Mallorca and have to agree with Katie - it's a cyclist's paradise. I stayed in Port Pollensa too and as well as being a beautiful seaside town (and not too touristy), it's perfect base for riding both the mountains and the plains. The highlight was, of course, Sa Calobra, but the ride to the lighthouse at Formentor was also memorable. There were loads of cyclists even in late October and the number of bike hire shops is insane. Oh, and the weather was perfect too. It's also the first place I've seen dedicated recharging points for electric bikes, something which will hopefully become commonplace in the future as it opens up a whole new world of cycling possibilities for people of all ages and fitness levels.

You must try other places here in Spain, outside typical tourist destinations. In summer time(July to September) Cantabria and Asturias are amazing. Check pictures and videos of places like: Portillo de Lunada, Estacas de Trueba, Lagos de Covadonga, Jitu Escarandi, Gamoniteiru, Lagos de Somiedo, etc, etc.... and you can travel from UK to Santander by ship(ferry) with your car and bikes.

I've done both this winter. I preferred Mallorca, which surprised me, as I like climbs and nothing in Mallorca is especially difficult. Tenerife has hellacious traffic, fairly dangerous in a lot of places. It spoils things a lot. Mallorca on the other hand has incredibly respectful drivers, you hardly notice the traffic most of the time. Mallorca also has loads of lovely quiet back roads to cycle on, whereas in Tenerife, the back roads tend to be uncycleable walls of immense gradient. Overall I just found Mallorca to be a more relaxed and enjoyable place to be and to ride. Not as epic, and more expensive, but way more fun.

Been to both places several times but have only Cycled in Majorca. Compared to Majorca, the routes in Tenerife tend to be clustered around the Coastal paremeter of the Island and are quite busy whilst the converse is true in Majorca. There is a micro climate in the North of Tenerife where it tends to rain alot more compared to the South of the Island. In terms of when to go I would suggest the best times to go Cycling in Majorca are in the months of April-May or late September-October as this avoids the Summer Tourist Crowds and it avoids the Summer heat which is not great if you try cycling out in the midday Sun ! For Tenererife the climate is a lot hotter since the Island is further South so I'd probably only consider Cycling during the Winter months in Tenerife.

Its always cloudy in the afternoon in Puerto del a Cruz too which does your head in, when i was there we found a road which is impossible to cycle up its around 50 % cars have been known to flip over backwards going up it, not bin to Majoric but it looks Ace.

Its at the back of La Oratava i remember passing some allotments turning right then going up vertical, there is a viewing park at the top, the sides of the road had steps going up like the staircase in a house ! I was in a car by the way and we nearly burnt the engine, gearbox and clutch out going up the bugger it was like the North face of the Eiger.

The Masca Road from Santiago del Teide to Buenavista del Norte is worth doing on Tenerife.. Amazing views. But Overall Majorca is the one to go for.. Easy to Tailor a flat lumpy or downright outrageous route on any given day as the mood takes.

Teide was incredible WOW I thought it would have been insane Katie ;-) haha, in all seriousness though Katie Majorca did look amazing on video & as you said the variety of cycling wins lots of Vegan options, have you considered Gran Canaria next time I have been once about 12 years ago but not cycling but it did look amazing for cycling now looking back.

+Alfred Stimoli It’s all in the mind Alfred - I never used to like them then I realised doing them would make me fitter :) so I bloody love em now. Take your time with them and get some easy gearing so you can spin up then rather than grinding. That’s never fun grinding. So glad you enjoy the videos 🚴🏼‍♀️🌱😊

On upright bike flat land is quickly boring, climbing offers a more fulfilling experience, the intensity of the effort, the sense of elevation through your effort, the views , the sceneries, and last but not least the long descent. if it was not for climbing I wouldn't cycle.

I think Majorca wins out simply because it's closer and has more variety. I don't know what Gran Canaria is like, I know some people go there for cycling as well. I imagine that its very arid like Tenerife. I think if you want the best of both worlds, then its Tenerife in the winter/spring to get some of those sunny rays that we don't get here, and Majorca in later summer or early autumn. Ahhhh, what about southern Italy or Greece? I have never been there, so I don't know?
@KatieKookaburra
@KatieKookaburra 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Majorca definitely cools off for sure but as long as it's not snow or ice then I'm not too fussed haha. Where's your favourite place you have been cycling? Love hearing people's recommendations :)

I have cycled in the hills behind Estepona in southern Spain, down the coast from Malaga going towards Gibraltar. There is a small town called Casares (a typical small white washed Andalusian town), which is worth a visit. From the coast the road goes up very quickly, If you like steep climbs then this area has many options. The route from the coast to Ronda is very popular. One thing to note, this part of Spain can get very windy! It was called the 'Windy Coast' before marketing men changed it's name to the 'Sunny Coast', haha Also, Croatia looks amazing and unspoilt. I've never been there but Cycling Maven did and it looked amazing. He went between the end of the Giro and the start of the TdF. So if you want to look you'll need to check out his videos around May/June time this year.

Tenerife has long been a popular training island for Tour riders. Although its popularity among elite riders is mainly due to altitude and length of climbs which compare to those on the actual Tour and also the great weather. Most riders do climb Teide on various routes but the Masca and Anaga Massifs also offer fantastic riding if you like challenging climbs and spectacular views. Check out Tenerife Masca switchbacks and Anagas videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqO7dJishaekq5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4nNnpKpg9l0nqs

People navigate to Majorca and Tenerife on the say so of others and they are both fantastic places to cycle, however there are many better places in Europe less well known and less of those pesky cyclists hogging up the road.. If you get the chance try the Sierra Nevada's in Southern Spain, Passau In Germany or anywhere west of Vienna in Austria.. Great places, amazing roads and challenging hills.. (Also cheap flights from the UK).. If your looking for a steep climb in Majorca take a look at the Puig De Santa Maria near Porta Pollensa (58% in places - see strava below). It's only a mile long and has more hairpins than an old lady's junk drawer.. Full disclosure: I'm off back to Tenerife next week because I like the chances of warm weather in November rather than Majorca! - www.strava.com/segments/2703596

Yeah I'mnot saying by any means these are the ONLY two places to go but I know a lot of people can't decide between the two so wanted to give my thoughts. And there's defo a reason people go to Majorca. So cycling friendly and incredible climbs!! :) I am so excited to go back :)
