This album is perfection. Tull is my second favorite band. I’m a Tull geek. Ian Anderson is an amazing composer & arranger.

As a teen in the 70's - When I bought this album (vinyl) I would lie on the floor in-between my speakers and play this tune, over and over (I actually had to buy another disc soon after). Tull, one of my favorite bands of all time. Minstrel in the Gallery and Songs from the Wood are my most played Tull albums. Thanks for playing this.

I’ve always loved this Christmas song by them. It’s a really upbeat tune full of Christmas cheer and great musicianship of course. Thanks for covering this one.

Pretty slick how they so easily and effortlessly transition from straight 4 to 7 time (as they lyrics says)! Masters of time signatures and using them appropriately and flawlessly.

Thanks for that! I love that song - and indeed the whole album. And Heavy Horses, which is their other English Folk inspired album (listen to the track "Heavy Horses"). And I like what you said about the desire to hide in the short days - I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Tull songs for the season. A Christmas Song Another Christmas Song Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow. (This one drove me a little crazy figuring out the time signature. The whole song is in 5/4 but the rhythm is complex and at first I thought he was switching time signatures. It has a good message, too)

Great Video!!! This album brings back many memories . . . Tull is one my favorite bands of all time, and this album is one of my favorites front to back ( yes I have the LP . . . HA HA HA ) every song "Velvet Green" is my favorite among them. I remember trying to learn the end drum part of " Soltice Bells " wispering to myself: " count 123 1234 " HA HA HA and calling myself a dullard . . . I am just kidding. SERIOUSLY, I am glad that you make videos like this because you help keep this and other wonderful music alive for the (two?) generations after mine, so to speak etc. I enjoyed many of your observations . . . the word I would have used to describe how the composition is designed and performed is TASTEFUL . . . STILL, you were right about Ian not over-playing. Keep up the good work!!!
@KatieShesko3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Aerlumron! I can imagine trying to learn the drum part! JT really likes to play with meter and feel a lot. I'm glad I started doing these. I probably wouldn't have checked out these musicians otherwise. I'm finding a new appreciate and love for amazing groups!

So i really think as far as flute playing goes you will be most attracted to the 1995 album "ROOTS TO BRANCHES" . There's also more variety of flutes played in his mature years including bamboo flute if im not mistaken. "The whistler" and some other songs from the album HEAVY HORSES and SONGS FROM THE WOOD have some tin whistle sprinkled in.

@@KatieShesko Many of us crave someone knowledgeable and appreciative to go deeper on Tull's folk-rock. Listen to this whole album and then Heavy Horses. Most of the lyrics for Heavy Horses tracks easily stand alone as poetry.

Hey, sorry for the late comment... I listen to most of my KZbin subscriptions in the car while running errands, but I don't like typing on a phone, so I don't usually leave comments until I get home. I really enjoyed this one. I've been a big fan of Tull and Anderson for a long time... since my teens (I'm 47)... granted, even then he was from my parents era... anyway, Solstice Bells is one of my favorites. 💖

I believe this album is considered to be of mostly Renaissance folk rock genre. I read somewhere that Elton John and Brian Wilson of the Beachboys had some great things to say about this album when it first came out. I think you got it spot on about Ian's musical arrangements. He's a genius no doubt with a great musical ear and the ability to meld all different styles of music together (the Under Wraps album is another great example). He can go from full-on flute virtuoso to complementary bit player. But, like a master musician, he always plays to the overall benefit of the song. Speaking of sitting around the fire, you'll like the ethereal choirs in Fires at Midnight off the same album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpCrkpKAnbyXnKc
