Yearlings First Bath! Waylon was dramatic…

While we like to desensitize our weanlings and yearlings to many different things they’ll have to do for the remainder of their lives (tying, bathing, standing for the farrier, etc), sometimes we accidentally start them later than we like! Today was one of those days with our 2 yearlings, Weezy and Waylon, who got their first full rinse down apart from being with their mommas!

Waylon is the best stud colt I’ve ever seen at leading. Ears perked and flipping back listening to you talk, walking right beside you and making sure not to walk in front, and even turning his head into you to ask for direction. Such a good boy!!

Always fun when you realise 'ah crap we didn't get around to baby baths' and now first bath is when they're too bloody big to stand over and tell off. We bought a lovely 3yo welsh pony who was very friendly but basically unhandled(not fully disclosed the extent until after we paid and he was on a truck to us) that was a fun challenge.

If it helps we have a chocolate Labrador who HATES water. She’s built for water with her double coat, webbed paws and tail like a rudder but nope, nope, nope. She hates the rain and needs an umbrella to go to the bathroom, she hates her little pool, she hates the regular pool she will only go in the water at the beach to try to pull our youngest son out when he’s swimming or on his boogie board. I’ve learned to make sure he has a rash guard on and to take a long lead because she will swim to him lightly nip his rash guard at the neck and pull him in. It’s so embarrassing…………..😵‍💫🤣

Wow poor foal when he didn't like the hose get some water in a bucket and use that. This should be done gradually in stages possibly even just watching another horse first. Flooding animals is never good.

He won't be coming to their farm. He will be going to a farm that stands studs. It's a facility that has the equipment to collect a stallion's semen and ship it. She said the location, but I can't recall it. I am sure her dream is to have a facility like that one day!

Yes it was his first time but usually a colt with be a little dramatic it’s not for getting more views… she knows her horses when they will get dramatic and she knows it was his first time…

Think of it like owning a business and then expanding that business by purchasing another business that is already proven and ready to go. I read that he had 130 babies last year. He is a proven investment. Also it will save her money that she spends on stud feed since she owns the stud.

I don't know what his care and boarding costs are. But that makes the million dollar price tag more understandable.

Mares are pregnant for 11 months… they can go over a year if they really wanted to they also have a safe date at 320 days they are able to foal and the foal is considered to be 340 full term.. they also don’t feel pregnant until they are in their 8/9 months in so technically they have easy pregnancies

He’s not a stallion yet… he’s a stud colt… if he needs to prove himself in the show pen which will take a couple more years at most to decide if he is able to.. he’s a pretty good colt so she’s keeping him as a stud… there’s no need to geld him unless he was acting up that would be a different story

Did you listen in the beginning? She says she tried to do it early but sometimes time gets ahead of them. She has lost of animals and unplanned things can happen. It's not the end of the world if the only time is after they're a year. She prefers to do it while they're young sometimes it just can't get done.

@@lyndsayhammond6884 actually they did crossties before… then she had her farm hand hold him regardless it’s not forced… he wasn’t used to it and is still learning on it any horse would do the same! If you really don’t know what your talking about stop talking they aren’t yours first of all the horses are hers and her family’s she knows what’s best for them they are gonna not like it the first time in anything they do! They have had water sprayed on them before but when they were still foals and they got really busy after they weaned them things happen too! Not forced!

Still don’t understand why you don’t use a sprayer that has a shampoo holder on it so as you spray, it fully soaps at the same time. Huge time saver
