I relate to both Ryland and Shane in this situation, I want to go to sleep as late as possible, then wake up as early as possible. So I can do as much as I can.

same I can't sleep well either, I too have serious insomnia!, I go to bed about 4 or 5 am & get up about 11am or 11:30am I have tried ASMR (Olivia Kissper / Jellybean Green) they both have good ASMR channels some days it does work others day my mind does not want to have anything to do w/ it, like refuse it & that is were I get frustrated too, I do however have 2 fans that run at night(box fan/ceiling fan) (white noise) some times that helps as well my dr suggest sleeping pills I told her NO cause they can get addicting & I don't want to rely on them so much!! guess I am like Shane, afraid to miss out on stuff too idk I get depressed alot as well I don't have alot of friends, I kind of keep to my self most times meanwhile my high blood pressure doesn't help either cause when it does get high I start to get headaches & I hear ringing in my ears wish I never had this kind of life :-( I don't like being depressed or frustrated so sorry (FML)

I set my goal bedtime for 10:30 PM but sometimes realistically I don't get to bed till 11-12. I feel tired when I go to bed 12+ though. I try to allow a full 8 hours, but sometimes it doesn't happen. I'm very much like Ryland in the fact I like to get up and get my day started and my husband doesn't. He's very much a night owl and I'm not necessarily an Early bird but I feel panicked if I don't wake up no later than 8 AM because I feel more productive during the hour of 7-8. I'm also 27 and a student on top of trying to start my own creative business lol

Oh no Shane! I've also found that it is difficult to relax and not be at the flight/ flight/ freeze response at night just because you don't know what's going to happen to you while in that sleepy, vulnerable state. I hope Shane and Ryland find a happy medium! Thank you, Kati for talking it out with them!

I noticed that once I removed the tv from my bedroom a few years ago, that I’m sleeping a lot better and falling asleep a lot faster. Training your body to sleep when you get into bed is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Also, working out before bed helps me drain my energy and meditation helps me clear my mind.

Bianca Osorio I don’t think working out before bed is a good idea. Finishing your workout at least 3 hours before bed is better than working out right before bed. I read about this somewhere, I think you should as well; because apparently exercising right before bed is actually pretty bad for you

A combination of emdr, Emotion-focused therapy and neurofeedback could be helpful for trauma based sleep issues - even hypnosis could be helpful -

Hypnosis would not help if he has any psychosis. Or manía... Atleast that's what my therapist said

I find journaling helps me sleep better. Its an opportunity to get any important things I might have missed, or just thought of at bed time, on a to do list, then get all the noise out of my head on to the page. It also helps me to see more clearly what is going on emotionally with me and to resolve this within myself and to get clear on any actions I might need to take & good ways to go about them. If I could get myself to journal regularly I think it would help my sleep pattern massively.

Just a thought: Even though Shane is very successful at his work, his work behavior doesn't seem particularly healthy to me. There are a lot of people working for hours and hours without taking a break that have underlying emotional issues. Because society rewards people who have a strong work ethic, I think, ultimately, those people who don't rest when they need to but overwork are often overlooked, because they are seen as successful and "well-functioning" people.

Yeah, burnout is a real threat, but also, you don't wanna break that flow. Having a deadline/cutoff can work with that though.

If you ever watch Shane's videos, you'll see that he does have anxiety & depression. He's had a really rough life that causes most of the issues he has today. 💔

I’m just going to throw out my sleep tip that I’ve been using since I was a kid. I’ve always struggled with “turning off” my brain and having intrusive negative thoughts. To combat these thoughts I will make up a story. The story doesn’t have to make sense or be plausible. It does normally have a “main character” and a sequence of events. This occupies my brain and prevents negative thoughts until I end up asleep. If you’d like to try, here’s a prompt I once gave my daughter: an octopus is best friends with a butterfly, what does a day together look like?

One small thing that has helped me some is putting a clock in my room so that I don't have to pick up my phone to see what time it is. Prior to having the clock, I'd pick up my phone to see the time and then end up clicking notifications and staying up for a bit.

Sleep is one of the biggest contributor to my mental health. I can say this from experience. When I get 7 hours durring normal sleeping hours versus 5 hours from 3am to 8am, it helps tremendously with being able to cope with the every day stresses. P.S. I love you Kati!

I can relate so much to Shane on this! I’ve always found a kind of beauty in working at night. I always feel like I have the world to myself in a weird way. I don’t really go out and like being around a lot of people so the best feeling was to be able to go to a place that’s open 24 hours and be all alone. I always thought I was weird but I’m glad to see someone I can relate to ☺️🙌🏼

Night time trauma is something i relate to sadly. I get not looking forward to sleep time that I've cried because i didnt want to sleep before lol... I get it shane... I sleep better now with Downton Abbey blasting in the background!

What's helped me is listening to asmr sounds like rain, wind chimes, storms, etc when I'm in bed.... or soft spoken stories. They relax me and soon I'm fighting sleep.

I’ve been going through a really tough time with sleep having multiple nightmares each night and waking up absolutely exhausted. I literally have to force myself to sleep but end up with 3 hours if I’m lucky. This meant so much to me knowing Shane has this struggle too and I’m not alone in it

I wonder if the sleep issues are also tied into having ADHD. I have extreme anxiety when "the time to sleep" arrives. I know I find excuses not to sleep. I believe Shane also has ADHD. Meds can also be an issue. He jokes about adderall on his chanel that will keep you up depending on if you're on extended release or the regular 4 hour pill. A consistent medication schedule will help. Taking the meds at the same time everyday. So hard for someone with ADHD. A book helps me, a none electronical book, interesting enough to read but not so much to keep me up to read and hyper focus all night.

Same! I didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until adulthood, so most of my life I have been like Shane and get my energy at night. Since being diagnosed and taking my extended release Adderall in the morning, my sleep routines have become much healthier and I actually love getting my day started in the morning.

Cbd has helped me Tremendously for falling And staying asleep. My Anxiety/ocd has always been heightened when the sun goes down and it really helps me slow down so I can actually relax.

I take full spectrum every night. It helped at first and after about 1 month my body seemed to be used to the sedating effects of it.

things that have helped me get more regular sleep/overcome insomnia: regular work schedule, taking meds at night (routine), taking a shower at night (routine), practicing good self talk to ward off anxiety (keeps anxiety dreams away), and making sure i have good pillows, etc. often actually setting a hard deadline to get offline helps as well.

ASMR helps me a lot. Doing my skin care routine right before bed. Stoping eating a few hours before I want to go to bed. And even exercising at night have helped me sleep better.

Shane, my sleep patterns are very similar. I grew up in a traumatic household and night time was my time to be away from it. There were no expectations or interaction with others so I used that time for me and to just get away from the world. The weight of tomorrow was too much sometimes so I stayed up super late because those hours of the night felt safe and a time for creative things like writing because I’m similar and more creative at night. I also have partially diagnosed adhd so that doesn’t help lol (in the dx process now)

Sometimes, I get so anxious thinking about what I'm going to have to do the next day, that I can't sleep. I don't like sleeping the day away, I like to wakeup (on weekends/breaks) at 8 or 9 o'clock, I don't like to stay up at night because of past experiences. I have a bedtime of 9 to 10 o'clock, because of school. I really enjoyed this video, it was very informational as well as entertaining. You're great!! 😁

Love when you do videos with Shane & Ryland. You all have great cheme for videos I feel. I was having an issue with too much sleep. Sleeping 10-12 hours and still not feeling rested. Turns out after some tests I has extreme apena. Now with a CPAP machine I'm sleeping 7-8 hrs and the clarity and and ability to be refreshed is amazing!

Not being able to sleep due to trauma is my issue. I was sexually assaulted while unconscious and woke up during the attack. Going to sleep terrifies me. I get up about 3 or 4 times to check the locks on the doors. I have panic attacks. I have nightmares. I feel like I'm never going to be able to sleep normally again. I am always so exhausted 😞

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that ! You're not alone, a girl I knew had the exact same situation. She had 2 solutions, she made a playlist of music that would calm her down and falls asleep listening to it. Altho she bought a very comfy bed, with soft silk blanket and pillow. This way your skin will feel good and safe. Altho something I have ridden about Trauma is to close your eyes, think about all the bad feelings you felt and move your eyes quickly from right to left. This is what the body does to clean your mind when he's asleep, it's like a way to manually do it ! It's alright to be exhausted after a trauma, even tho you feel like you'll never sleep, I promise you can get better and happy again !

having a night light beside my bed helps me fall asleep, complete darkness sometimes makes me anxious but finding the right night light that changes colors relaxes me and soothes my mind. :)

My trick is play wave sounds, there are lists on spotify with relaxing music and sounds like rain, that helps me a lot.

Kati! Thank you for this video! I have lived through traumatic childhood experiences, and have struggled with sleep my WHOLE life! To hear Shane talk briefly about how home wasn't a safe place at night really rang true for me. It was very validating to hear. I never thought about training myself to do a new ritual slowly, and to do it with someone else to help feel safe. I might have to try this. Thank you to you both!

Loved the video! My partner and I decided to move the TV out of our bedroom almost 4 years ago now and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. Although we have fallen into old habits by using an ipad or phone in bed. I've recently started keeping my phone out of the bedroom. So at night I plug it in to charge in a different room and go to bed without looking at screens right beforehand. WOW what a difference it has made to my sleep. I highly recommend this for everyone. I know a lot of people use the alarm clock on their phone, I personally just picked up a cheap alarm clock from a thrift store for 5.00 and it's worth it.

this is my schedule: 11 pm shut dows the pc 11 pm-12 am kind of a night rutine 12 am-3 am literally just stays on twitter or instagram 3 am i realize i have school at 8 am and die internally for half an hour 3:30 am go to sleep 3:30 am-4 am thinks about all the awkward stuff ive done and how dumb i am 4 am fall asleep

I'm the person that will sleep for 10 hours if I don't have to get up and do something, because I have a more depressive personality. The main thing that has helped me be on a more regular schedule is working a more "normal" 8:00 to 5:00 job. I'm a musician but need that corporate income and the regular hours and having to wake up early has helped me really fall asleep on the early side as well. Great video Kati! Everything Shane said about sleep... same, same, same. Me and my boyfriend are the same in that sense. 😶 Plus, Going to sleep and generally turning off the light and just lying in bed in the dark, it just makes me uneasy and I'm having a hard time relaxing and falling asleep. Hearing that I'm not the only one helps, it makes me feel a little less guilty for being this way, which is the hardest thing about not being able to sleep properly... the guilt of not functioning like a "normal" human being.

I have always find sleep anxiety inducing so I’m on so many medication for sleep so I can be on a ‘normal’ schedule but I have always slept better during the day, when I can have a nap, I find it so much more comforting for me. I have never found something so damn relatable. Thank you so much for sharing your vulnerability with everyone, Shane. It’s hard for people to understand the triggers surrounding sleep. Sending so much love. You’re incredible. 💜

I had a bed which I used as a couch a lot, I would read, be on my laptop or phone and even paint or make things on my bed during the day. I also did homework on my bed because it was the comfiest way (at least it felt like it but I was actually ruining my back so yeah...) an then I got the oportunity to take my brothers bed because he was getting a new one. His bed is a bunk bed with originaly two beds but we took the lower one out. I also got a smaller desk for doing my homework which noch stands under my bed and I have like a small room for studying there and I still have my old desk which is bigger to do my paintings/crafts /being on my computer and whatnot. Seperating the areas for sleeping/resting, studying and leisure activities really helped me in sleeping better but also in studying more effectively as my phone is always staying out of my "study room" Btw. I don't have a huge room, but the bunk bed added a lot of space which made this possible and I can really recommend it even though it might sound weird to have a bunk bed when you are already an adult.

I'm a musician with my own studio in house and I have this EXACT problem. Wow. I never thought I would see a video on this because it's such a creative's problem. I go to sleep around 1pm and wake up around 6-7pm.... Sometimes I don't sleep at all. So glad this is being discussed. I don't think I'll ever change that really, but what I have been wanting to do is sleep longer. Maybe go to bed around 11am or so. Thank you for this.

I suffered from sleep paralysis pretty bad as a kid but never got it when I slept away from home. I do believe it's for a similar reason that they were talking with Shane about. It makes so much sense to me.

I completely relate to this. My fiancé thinks I don't sleep at night because I don't want to, but it's because I just can't. I don't have sleep related trauma, I just have always been in physical pain and sleep causes more pain for me, so sleeping is not something I look forward to doing. It's a real struggle and it's caused quite a few arguments for us, but we do deal with it. I try to regulate my sleep pattern, and it can work for a few days, but I always end up going back to sleep at like 5am and falling back into the same old patterns because regulating my sleep habits doesn't stop the pain

I’m the same way. My pain keeps it so hard to sleep. But all you want to do is rest and make this pain go away, it also doesn’t help my boyfriend works for the railroad and is on call 24 hours a day. His phone can ring anytime. And it is normally right after I have finally fallen asleep.

I have a very similar sleep schedule to Shane. Honestly Shane's mental health is relatable. Sleep sucks, anxiety keeps us up.

I feel like outside of Shanes trauma a large part of these issues both with hyper focus and sleep are from ADHD. There's some academic research that resulted in saying that the ADHD brain tends to benefit better from a 2am-10am sleeping pattern rather than the neurotypical something pm to 6-8am wake-up. I completely understand where he's coming from RE getting in the zone to that extent, I have it sometimes with University papers I enjoy or on the bi-yearly time I play Sims I can achieve that focus for a day or two continuously which is insane. Definitely a good idea to try and shift or cut the focus or 'release' as you were calling it if it interferes that much with his life, but it's hard for someone with ADHD to cut that as we know it truly is really productive time and can feel like the same standard won't be met if we come back to it later. Notes are definitely helpful though. Great video!

I often have a hard time falling asleep because I am worried about all the things I need to do but something that has helped relieve that is writing down what I want to do the next day. My sleep isn't perfect but after I started doing that I saw a great improvement!

I definitely needed this as a push to re regulate my sleep. I can definitely relate to Shane! My usual bedtime is around 2:30-3 and I don’t feel most creative until around 11 so I catch myself staying up editing forever or painting or something like that.

i totally agree with the positivity before bed. i always watch one of shane’s videos before bed because he makes me laugh and happy. i love him and i hope he gets better.

Because of my unstable childhood, I always thought I was a night owl because it was the time I DID feel safe, because nobody was awake or around. So I wanted to be awake for that and sleep through the daytime when all the "bad" (whatever that might be) things were happening. But Shane's story of not feeling safe to sleep also makes a lot of sense! I never thought about it like that.

This was so interesting 😯 I live with occasional insomnia. What I STOPPED doing was getting out of bed. I lay there and do deep breathing. I've learned to relax. Most times I will go back to sleep. 👍

I relate to Shane so incredibly much when it comes to bedtime and watching others get ready for bed! It’s so frustrating and mainly upsetting to watch them go to sleep while I stay up all night to work

First off, I love Shane so much. Thanks for having him and Ryland on your channel. Second, I have so much trouble with sleep, and none of the traditional sleep hygiene suggestions have ever been much use to me. Acupuncture, on the other hand, when combined with my prescribed sleep meds, does help.

It’s so important to be with someone on the same sleep schedule as you. I dated someone for a couple years who sleeps 11 hours at a time and because i have sleep anxiety and have to be up at 4:30am during the week, it always fell on me to walk the dog, clean the house, make dinner, everything. I have a nighttime wind down routine too like ryland and I would love to find someone who matches me sleep schedule and activity level next time around.

Journaling before bed is a good creative release, something anyone could try. It not only allows for your ideas to be written down but maybe even reflection.

I feel like if u work from home it would be important to get changed into some sort of different outfit, and then get into ur pjs again to go to sleep. Cause is important for ur brain to know that they are different states. So I kinda see Shane living in a robe all the time being a barrier to a proper sleep schedule... Also I find the no phone in bed thing v important. I recently started snoozing my alarm and checking socials in the morning in bed and it made things lots harder that it used to be to get up

Never related more to not wanting to sleep and being at your most creative in middle of the night than to Shane’s explanation! Never thought anyone has ever gotten it and have always been looked at crazy or judged for it. Great video!

Shane said the bedroom was dark & scary. Maybe he could sleep with a dim lamp on or something. Or have different things in the bedroom, or maybe less stuff to help relax. Also you guys need alarms to start/stop working. & get andrew to agree to the time to stop working also.

This video really hit home for me. Good sleep hygiene is so important but many of us don't take it seriously. Lack of sleep is something missing from my life and it really affects both my physical and mental health. This topic is something I am working on right now. I can relate to Shane on this sleeping issue. I was the same way & even hated being in my room. After working on it in therapy & doing emdr I now have "normal" sleeping habits. It will & can get better, Shane. You are not alone with this, I promise.
