Great video! I've loved Big Boys since I was young, and started HO model railroading when I was 8 years old. Had many layouts and changed over to N scale around 30 years ago. Back then I was buying all of the N scale Rivarossi Big Boys and Challengers made in Italy, and I have around 5 converted to DCC as well. I also like collecting the limited edition and quite expensive box sets like the Portland Rose, etc sold by Con-Cor.

Interesting scale setup. I just put mine on the rails earlier, the derailment was upsetting but, I made it work on a separate rail. One beautiful item.

Received mine from Trainworld on Saturday morning but waited a day to unbox and test. I had setup up a test track using Kato track to test all my equipment I finally pulled out of storage last year so I wanted to make sure it was clean before putting this nice new model on the tracks. After a few loops around and two derailments due to track alignment issues of being setup as a carpet runner, I re-boxed the Big Boy until I have a more permanent layout setup. Still I have a couple of observations. One is I think I'll be 3d printing a long re-rail tool to help get it on the track without much problems. My curves are wide (17.5-19) and superelevated so the lean where the track runs under a bridge created a clearance problem. Also I only run DC so I notice the noise level is more than my other new Kato steam loco. Part of that noise is from the Kato track which I won't be using when I build the next layout. Still I might switch to Tomix track if it proves to much quieter, I'll have to order some for testing before I make that decision. This came to mind because I do have two long Tomix arch bridges where the trains are much quieter when they transition from Kato bridges, thinking it must be the type of plastic. Anyway, your room looks great so enjoy, -Mike in NC,
@ModelTrainsWow Жыл бұрын
Yeah I still haven't had any problems to report with mine. The kato track does tend to get noisy on the double concrete curves I have, and when it gets elevated. But when running on flat carpet, I don't really hear anything at slow speeds. Sad to hear you're having my 844 derailment problems. it has yet to derail at all for me. I was actually at the National N Scale convention in Reno today and someone was running their Big Boy and was having some problems derailing and such. Although the track he was on was a bit wobbly

I have the KATO, the Athearn and a brass BIG BOY. I want to do a tale of three Big Boys and compare running traits, detailing and ....... all of them against each other. It should be interesting. I have all the fixtures needed to do handlaid N scale track and about 12 nice buildings completed. How many cars up a grade and around a curve, how smooth and slow can they run and how brutally handsome each is. Of course, no Big Boy could ever stand against my N scale H8 Allegheny, but I can't expect any Big Boy enthusiast to understand why this is so.... just run home and cry to mommy cause you ain't got an H8 Allegheny in brass and no Big Boy should ever talk poop around the Allegheny.
@ModelTrainsWow8 ай бұрын
Seems like a legit thing to do. Compare them all to the H8 too for a non Big Boy viewpoint.

I hate to admit. But your Kato FEF-3 844 looks weird without its smoke deflectors. It did look like this when it rolled off the assembly line. But since revenue service and excursion service 844 has never been seen without smoke deflectors. Please feel free to explain in reply why you don’t like them. The Kato model looks great with them on. But they are removable if you like to see what it looked like when it rolled off the assembly line. And the Big Boy is a huge hit made by Kato. And both sets of drive wheels are its own engine. Lots of pulling power under one boiler. It’s even perfect to double head with 844. If you plan on doing a 4014 and 844 double header, I’m ok with you keeping 844s deflectors off since you like it that way.
@ModelTrainsWow4 ай бұрын
Because it doesn't look quite right with the reflectors on, it doesn't "look like a train". Every steam engine growing up that I saw in books and movies and images in my head never had smoke deflectors. Taking them off just makes it look more awesome and like a stereotypical train. But some people grew up knowing this engine and can't see it without them. I'm not wrong, you're not wrong, their just opinions.

I do agree with you 100% on the 844, I have about 150 DCC locomotives and that one is, by far, the worst of ANY brand I own. I was stupid enough to buy the Greyhound one last year and it's just as bad as the original. I'm a little disappointed in the presentation of this Big Boy though, just simple box. I have the BLI and Athearn Big Boys too and the Athearn box and contents are fantastic. Nice booklet with the history of the Big Boy along with detailed illustrated parts breakdown and operation instructions. Waiting on my Kato version with DCC and sound. It will probably be the crown jewel of all N scale locomotives in history.
@ModelTrainsWow Жыл бұрын
Haha, oh no! The Greyhound isn't much better? That's sad to here. But I am happy to report that I have not had a single issue or complaint about the Big Boy. But I do agree they went a little cheapo on the box. Nothing special, in fact it feels like a $20 model kit is inside vs a multi hundred dollar engine.

I have 4 of the Atheran Big Boys and I hate them the traction road tires popped off after just using once. Than the remote control is junk and causes problems with the DCC system. They look good but performance sucks. Trying to use that green frog 🐸 to put on the wheels scares me.
