KTM/Husky/Gas Gas TBI Map Switches and Gear Ratios

Testing out the difference in power and traction on the TBI bikes on the different map switch settings, I do feel a difference and feel the map switches are useful on these bikes. I have also switched back to the stock 13/45 gearing and I think it's much better than the lower gearing I had the first few rides on the TE300 Pro.

Good observation that gearing is dependent on rider weight. I’m 200 lbs/ 91 kg- 240/109 kg geared up. I ride mostly steep and similar terrain 60 miles south of you. The new bike has been optimized to find traction where there is little. I experimented with final gearing and settled on 13/48 ( 3.7). Stock is 13/45 ( 3.46). I give up a little on top, my new V max is 65 mph/ 105 km/h, but I am optimizing for the steeps. Most of my riding is on second, third, and fourth gear. First is now a granny gear just for engine braking. The new gearing lets me maximize traction by taking advantage of the TBI’s improved low end torque and ability to lug. To sweeten to pot I added a Clake One Light Clutch. Now I have the equivalent of a wet liquid cooled torque converter with all day long one finger actuation. The new motor is so good you can lug it down till you think it is dead and it springs back to life zombie like. It is in this zone where ultimate traction is found on wet root mazes, snow, slippery slab climbs, and the like. You know what I’m referring to…

13/48 is common here as well, the 12/45 I tried is slightly lower. You are right about how well the engine lugs down low, it's really impressive.

Greg, I have a '23 TX300. It's the first KTM product that I haven't added teeth to the rear. I love this new trans. It is the perfect combination between a "W" and the "XC".

Great video, in the UK we get 14-45 stock gearing ! The bike is supplied with a 13 in the box (this has always been the case) I actually found 14-45 on this bike believe it or not works really good for all round riding it makes the motor really grunt and find traction easily, it was the same with the previous bikes and even pre tpi the 14 front makes it super smooth and not at all aggressive

When I got my Beta 300 it came with 13-51 and I found WAY too low. I tried 14-51 then settled on 14-48 for everything. I love it. The clutch is so smooth and the bike never overheats so I can lug it everywhere in the Hard enduro stuff no prob and still have high speed for the road sections !!

When I first purchased my 24 XCW the map switch was $64, now they sell for $130. I don't see how you can tell the difference with your map switch from white to green. I've ridden four different new XCW and TE TBI's and I cannot tell the difference. Now on my 23 XC, there is a huge difference! Night and day difference. Great riding and agree on your views. I've watched your vids, you have ridden in the most amazing places ever, so when you say it's beautiful where you are, it must be absolutely stunning in person.

The difference I feel is subtle on normal riding, it's in the most technical sections I can feel the white map softer and giving me better traction. The connection with nature we get in the trails or summiting mountain tops is really special, it's hard to describe to people that don't ride but for those of us that get to experience these places it's one of the best feelings ever.

I have a carbureted 2024 Beta with a map switch and I also use the soft map for technical hill climbs and soft, muddy, greasy rock climbs. Keeps the front end down better, that’s what I always notice right away. I also have my power valve adjusted so it hits higher in the rev range making single track stuff a lot more manageable. Mind you the power out of the hole that my Yamaha WR 450 has is very addictive. It’s set up more for open Baja style riding though. That first ride on a new bike is always a very memorable one. @@PNWEnduro Well, you were right. I went out today and ran the white map and green map up tech sections and there is no doubt the white map is more linear and I also noticed when you crack the throttle it doesn't snap as much as the green map. Pretty much as you pointed out. Good job Greg.

I just bought a 24 TE300 coming from a 2020 300XC-W and I absolutely love the changes they've made other than the gearing. It seemed like the 2020 I had first for a get unstuck only gear (which is nice to have for sure), and do most of my starting in second. Then as the speeds get higher the longer gears felt good for carrying flowing speed. Now on the 2024, first is like second on the 2020 and even spacing from there to a fairly low top cruising speed. I may be alone in that feeling, but I'd rather have wider ratios to cover more variety of situations. As you mentioned, I am a heavier guy so starting on hills requires a pretty low gear to get moving.

Yeah for me and the terrain I ride a lot of the time on the old wide ratio I was always searching for a place between 2nd and 3rd in the slower stuff. The new transmission is kind of in-between the old XC and XCW transmissions and I'm really happy with it.

​@@PNWEnduroI've only got about 8 hours on the bike as of now, so we'll see if the transmission grows on me. I do definitely like the closer gear spacing for mid speed riding, but higher speed it seems like I'm hunting between 4th and 5th instead of just staying in 4th. The taller first actually surprised me on one spot while I was trying to get unstuck. I thought I was just slipping the clutch and unable to move, but I was actually digging with the tire. The amount of smooth very low end power the TBI has is light years better than my TPI which would get a little "chuggy" and like to die if slipped in first.

@Flametux I rarely get over 4th on my trails with this bike, If I'm riding trails that open and fast I'm generally taking the four stroke out anyway. Nice to have options! Agree the TBI is a big improvement over the TPI models.

​@PNWEnduro Agree on the 4 stroke, I have a 23 450 XC-F that I use for that kind of stuff too. The OHV area I was at is on a mountain pass, so it has everything from tight tree stuff like yours up top to high desert-like area lower. I just need to bring both bikes next time lol.

I had dropped to 12/45 when i firsy got mine, just made the gearing wrong, everywhere. So imwent back ti stick gearing. I esned up getting the TSP poeer kit eith medium compression head snd the erm device. And it really dialed the bike in. I find it easier to ride everywhere. Better grunt si less throttle and easy to find traction. And the power opens up much cleaner snd better for hill climbs, zaps, etc

Great vid...just picked up a KTM300 xc-w...wondering how the gear ratios between the brands may differ? That would have an impact on your sprocket changes I wud think.

If you have the 2024 300xc-w transmission and final gearing are the same as the TE. Other brands like Sherco/Beta will have different ratios but the spacing of the gearing is similar. I was never a fan of the old wide ratio gearing on the xcw/te bikes.

Your 250 like my 300 XC-W comes from the factory in the white/soft map with no switch. Adding the map switch will allow you to unlock the green/power map. There's mixed info on what map they come with but when I put on the map switch, it was clearly faster/more responsive. If you have no interest in changing maps on the fly, I would put that $130 towards the TSP ERM tuner. It'll allow you to switch maps on top of better power/tuning options.

Just got a 300 xcw and waiting for my map switch as it’s BO. Got the TSP ERM and when I plugged it to my bike I was on the green map. Maybe it’s depend on the tech who prep the bike at the dealer when you got it. I didnt had the map switch on my TPI but on this one pair with the TSP ERM you can really fine tune it and get all the potentiel that you paid for

@matlafalange1 yes, the theory is that the way that the CANBUS system reads the map switch, as soon as one is plugged in it'll automatically switch to the green map. If you read the EXC/XC-W manual it actually states that unless a map switch has been attached, the bike is in the white/soft mapping.
