It's because you don't understand what you're looking at. Many of the Daito Ryu techniques are really like exercises to train Aiki. They're not meant for fighting. It's the same thing with Aikido. However, some of the Daito Ryu techniques (out of the 3800ish techniques) do very well in fighting. The movement patterns, bodywork, and strategy you learn in the techniques is then translated to more combative methods. Unfortunately this is not often taught or trained anymore. Only a few individuals know how to use it for actual fighting.

So if only a few individuals only know how to martialize the material and it's not often taught or trained for combative methods anymore, then it's hardly a 'martial' (warfare) art anymore. I say this as one that has trained in Aiki-Jujutsu and used some of it in counter-grappling self-defense against grabs without escalating a situation into a full blown brawl by resorting to striking. However against modern day attackers, most of whom have either minor or extensive training in western boxing, and against modern knife attackers (which I've witnessed in the prison system and free world) it's of no-value. Yet many instructors market it as a combat art efficient for today's violent streets (or prison system) where the criminal gangs grew up in a culture of violent combat and many train in boxing or mma, as well as knife arts. I say this to encourage 'all' Aiki-Jujutsu instructors to step up their game and incorporate modern attacks into their training if they wish to market or claim their art is a 'self-defense' or 'combatives' art.
