@AbaNPreach 11 ай бұрын
In order to sample another artists song, you have to do a few things. 1) Acknowledge its theirs 2) you have to ask for permission 3) Credit them on all filings 4) Pay them. Nobody in the music industry can sample or take other songs without permission, if they do they get sued for theft annd lose millions. See fugees or robin thicke / pharrell. They stole and paid dearly for it. *Its even worse for comedians* because they rely on the element of surprise to get laughs many times. So for many jokes, they lose their luster if they have been heard by the same audience numerous times. Its why comics have ot come up with new stuff often. Music has a lot of replayability, comedy does not.

There is a difference. Feminizing black men is disrespectful and intentional. If they aren't putting them in dresses, they make them play a gay man. It's to deny and destroy a black man's reputation and image. It sounds crazy, but if you start to pay attention, you see it a lot. A lot more than any other race or ethnicity.

Not a comedian but an artist (drawing not music) and this pisses me off so much. I’ve seen so many artists get their works reposted without credit, have their watermarks removed, designs get put on clothing and sold for profit, art get fed to ai, and so many people don’t see an issue. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen, “Well if they didn’t want it to be stolen they shouldn’t have posted it on the internet.” It’s so wild how everyone can understand how stealing music is immoral, but don’t see it the same way with every other creative endeavor.

This girl in middle school stole my hairstyle idea for an upcoming competition. I had shown her a pic to ask for her opinion. She said it was whacked, yet I still executed my idea perfectly. She won. She went on first. I was thirteen. Now i am forty-five, and I still get upset when I randomly remember. Till this day, she re-tells the story of how she won (we have common aquantences). Justice for Mr. Katt Williams. Much respect for that man. *Edit: Here's more context. The competition was about representing our city by showcasing wearable art. When all the girls started talking about making dresses, capes, hats, etc, I went to what I thought was an original idea and incorporated my hair. I made my hair the main attraction. I live in a city where the heat during the summer can get up to 122°F. I came up with the idea of styling my hair in a 🌞 theme. At that time, I had thick, black waist-length hair. The prize was a trip, some cash, but most importantly for me, recognition and validation for my hard work. They were also going to print the picture of the winner in the local newspaper. I was seeking my dad's approval. He rarely praised anything I did. This was my moment to shine! So, I worked very hard and diligently by washing my neighbors' toilets, dishes, and any other household chores. I did this for six weeks. I gathered enough money to buy the stuff I was going to use on my hair (hair spray, coloring, beads, clips, etc) for one "trial" run then for the real thing. After the trial, a friend of mine took pictures so I could recreate the hairstyle. Being thirteen and naive, I showed the pictures to the girl who stole my idea. She said it was whacked and dumb to represent with "just hair." I pay no mind to her comment even thou I valued her opinion because she was the popular girl in school. I was not. I was short, chubby, and wore second-hand clothes. Anyway, my parents were too busy with my younger siblings to pay me much attention. In my thirteen year old mind, I truly believed that by winning my parents, especially my dad, would be so proud of me. That girl took that away from me. She showed up first. By the time I arrived, she had said to people that she had a "feeling" that I would copy her. She went on first, and I went second to last. I modified my style to make it look original, but it didn't work. It looked messy and dirty due to the massive amount of hairspray I used (you know, when you comb your hair with tons of hairspray, it gets flaky and whitish). Not only did I not win, but I also was made fun of. Now, I have been a married woman for twenty-five years with two adult sons. I'm happy, and that competition when I was a girl did not define my life. It was a life lesson like many other lessons in life. I'm happy with my family, and I'm fortunate to have a wonderful man who loves me 😃🥰

The wild part is we're thinking about a big comedian stealing a joke from another big comedian. Katt was basically a nobody at the time of the ComicView jokes that Cedric stole. Cedric had no idea Katt was going to become as legendary as he is now and thought that he was going to be able to snatch the joke and Katt was just going to have to hold that L. Cedric got bodied by Katt and the Internet. And I definitely feel that line about hearing something a long time ago and forgetting that it wasn't your original idea. That's what Lizzo got hit with when she used that "I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100% that bitch" line in her song that blew up, completely forgetting that it was a VERBATIM tweet that she had read years earlier. Lizzo had to pay dues and accurately list her writing credits after she got sued, The Kings of Comedy need to do the same.

I’m totally agreed about the joke theft, but I’m not so sure about the tweet. If people are naturally witty, there are phrases that are just going to naturally occur. Like Flat-earthers liking pancakes. I just made that up and I’m sure some (very bad) comic has said it somewhere. I think some things will be duplicated. BUT, the delivery & phrasing & tone of voice is what makes a comedian. Once you copy more aspects, yeah, it’s stealing material. As for bring UPS, you can’t be a UPS MAN and a box at the same time. I think you CAN be “UPS” because that implies a delivery. Anyone can expose anyone. If you don’t, isn’t that the R word? I’m not being nasty. It’s just people can’t believe in “equality ” (which I truly believe in), but then not treat all people equally. So thank you for this. :-)

@Saddles_N_Sauvignon 11 ай бұрын
@@PlaylistProleteriat It’s not that simple in the world of high end competition horses. If you are already a famous well off trainer then it’s easy to get the credit. But if you’re a young nobody starting off, you take any and all the work you can get, train/fix the horse, then sell it to hopefully make a small profit so that you can build your reputation and business. Problem is, stealing the credit for another’s work runs deep in the high end horse world. Lots of “famous” trainers are infamous for hiring young hungry passionate help on a barely livable wage. Then making them do all the work, then once the horse is good, taking the horse for themselves to show for the paying client. They then get to keep all the earnings (anywhere from 100k to over a million at large prestigious shows) and on top of that prize trucks, trailers, saddles, sponsorships, more clients ect… You as the assistant can’t do anything because it’s technically not “your horse” it’s a paying client and you can’t really call out your “boss” as they will fire you and make sure no other trainer in the industry hires you for making them look bad. The famous trainers are all “friends” with one another and friends with the judges and people who run the shows. It’s not hard for them to pick up the phone if you make them mad and have you blacklisted from ever getting work again. Lots of people unfortunately bite their tongue or look the other way as long as their horse is winning. Typically the only way you make it is if you’re rich to begin with and can buy your way in, are part of an already famous established training family (aka your dad is a famous trainer) or the famous head trainer you’re working for makes a misjudgment and lets you show a horse they think isn’t good and you end up winning. So many aspiring trainers go bankrupt or never make it because of how the industry works and eventually just give up or accept their place as the assistant. Hope that helps kind of explain it.

that idea of "don't expose people of your own community" is actually bad for any type of community in the long run cause theirs always going to be people that will take advantage of that to get away with things. and to be honest the idea of "my community" needs to be culturally fined tuned cause to many people feeling betrayed or on the other side don't care about that kind of thing except to get something out of it while never helping others.

It’s tough for people to understand the work and art that comes with developing a stand up routine if you’re not into comedy… I think it’s evidenced perfectly w the UPS costume joke, the delivery alone is so important that Steve got “Awww” with his improper delivery cause he never worked the joke out.. he just stole it. Mike Curry got the reaction he wanted cause he created it and developed it to that point.

In 1999 and 2000, I lived in LA because I was attending FIDM. My roommate got us an unpaid “gig” that was counted as an internship (which were important to have on your resume - at least back then - in the fashion world). We were “dressers¨, helping runway models do quick changes at an annual fashion show fund raiser Holly Robinson Peete holds at her house, in her beautiful back yard. Somehow my sparkling wit got me sitting in the Hollywood Hills in Holly’s kitchen after the event, where I was chit chatting with Holly, Angela Bassett and Mark Curry. And let me just say, Mark Curry was on fire. He was so funny, one joke after another after another and you could tell so much of it was just off the dome. That man is so talented and it makes me sad that he’s not still a big name in entertainment because I saw his immense talent, live, in person, and raw, just playing around, while Holly lovingly yelled at him to, “stop bouncing the damn basketball inside her house.” 😆 It’s fucked up to hear that bigger names stole from him and possibly even blocked him from getting to the very top. In my mind, he should be starring in movies now or at least have another tv show. Maybe he chose to step back and if he did, then I hope he’s happy and doing well but if it was taken from him…that’s a damn crime.

In my mind Mark Curry is a bigger act than Steve Harvey. I enjoyed the Hanging with Mr. Cooper show on TGIF back in the '90s more so than The Steve Harvey Show. It is a shame how a lot of the trail blazing comedians that blew up first in Hollywood are largely not in the fore front these days. But then again it could all be part of God's protective plan. Especially when you realize those folks who are in the forefront getting all the limelight today are all blinded by money.

This doesn't only happen in community. It happens in family as well. Family members don't like being exposed infront of other family members for who they truly are. It happened to me just this last Christmas and New Year. My wife had been mistreated for years by her own mother and aunts, I was always there to support her and I encouraged her to speak up against it. The moment she did and questioned her mom about this behavior, and exposed the rest of her family, we were outcasts now, it's like "how dare you say I'm a liar and a hypocrite and expose my cover to everyone? even though everyone knows I am" but people prefer to stay quiet for 2 reasons to avoid drama and because they are in some way beneffiting from that person. It's wild to see how now we are the outcasts from the family, we are not invited to any family gatherings, even though we were the victims not the abusers. So yeah... Kat was right when he said "it's the year of the truth" It's better to be alone rather than being surrounded by people who are NOT REAL.

@sarahanderson6913 OH yeah I understood that process before my wife, I had the same discussion with my father. He blamed me for moving out at 18 just because he spent all his savings and expected me to support the entire family. That happened 18 years ago and we had talked about it and "solved" it but damn just a few months ago he told me he was disappointed and never forgave me it was shocking to me. So I just told everyone in my fam, if this behavior continues and everyone is ok with it I'm no longer going to visit them, they can expect no calls no visits 0 contact. Mom changed her mind asap and backed me up, my older brother just listened (I'm the youngest) my dad never apologized but still sort of recognized weeks later how he fucked up. All these discussions or "fights" happened the same year lol its just surprising to me how many people are just tired of this BS behavior and no one wants to stay quiet anymore. Stand up for yourself, be brave for you and the ones you love. Fight for what's right for you. That's the real love.

Stand-up comedy is performance art, it's literally a one-person play. People need to realize that even veteran comedians will spend an entire YEAR OR MORE crafting a 1 hour set. Countless written drafts, countless hours of them workshopping the jokes in smaller towns with smaller crowds, audio recording where they should pause or use a different word, video recording to see how they should move on stage, changing the order of jokes to be more cohesive, and that's on top of actually having to be funny and not repeating anything you've done before! It's an art no matter how you slice it or dice it, but for some wild reason, people don't take plagiarism of it as seriously as other forms of performance. Could you imagine your favorite musician working for a whole year on an album, only for a completely different musician to lift that album, bar for bar and release it under their own name? It would cause an uproar. Musicians nobody has heard of have sued huge musicians for millions and won for a melody just being similar, or for sampling without clearance, but comedians are just supposed to sit down and take it when their stuff gets lifted. Katt told zero lies and I'm glad he finally got a platform to lay it all out. You notice how nobody he mentioned has responded calling him a liar...

Same in academia. My 2/3 of poc mentors talk the craziest to me. One of them, a black woman (just like me) wanted to prevent me from attending a writing group and decided to tell public safety and several profs I was a threat when I told her she was being unfair, and that I will attend. All the other advisors told me I was being confrontational by telling her that and no one but her friend was willing to call her out on it. I reported her for harassment and got the college investigator on it, but once I said the prof was black and female (like me), suddenly I couldn’t move forward with the case. This happened several time hen I told my law professor, fellowship director, and others. They know she was using racial epithets against me, but because she was a black woman too, it suddenly didn’t matter.

This is 100% legit. There's alot of stealing of intellectual property in the world of arts and entertainment,more than the general public realise. There's quality non famous people within the industry doing good work and providing good content and but for a great break don't necessarily get the attention that they deserve. Yet someone higher up hears about what they're doing or something they've done that has a flash of brilliance and they steal it and bring it to a wider audience. I work in the arts world so I know this first hand myself. And to have your ideas taken and used by someone with more of an audience or someone you've networked or collabed with is tough,knowing they've taken a good thing and used it to make themselves look better and become better. Being a creative,entreprenuerial artist is a challenging world to be in. I've not heard of Katt Williams before but I applaud him and anyone who is willing to call out people who have made their fame and fortune off of the talent and ideas of others.

This is one of the most important discussions we're currently having in comedy, music, and a few other fields. I'm glad you mentioned the fact that sometimes people come up with remarkably similar ideas completely separately, with no thievery or even inspiration between them. There's a big difference between thievery and inspiration, anyway, and anyone who slips up and recycles something without realizing it would be more than ready to own up to it if it gets called out. It's the people who are stealing who get elusive, confrontational, or otherwise suspicious in their behavior. "I don't even wanna sound like someone" is a good sentiment to live by, in my opinion.

I completely agree with this video especially on the topic of black communities staying silent about stuff that effects their image. There’s a lot that goes on behind “the curtain” and no wants to admit the wrongs that happen all because we still are in this mindset of “we finally got a seat at the table”. We than lose our morality for people who could care less about their communities they feed off from.

Amen. I think it's that paired with the benefits that our system gives to what I call "dancing monkeys" not in an offensive way but certain celebrities in minority communities make a joke out of themselves to keep getting checks and sell out their community.

I keep reading people in the comments saying it's not a big deal to take someone else's jokes so I think this NEEDS to be understood. It's not a small thing it's a horrific thing to have done. It can take decades and a lifetime beyond even that to truly master a craft but especially a creative one. There are so few guides to this stuff unless your are lucky enough to find a GOOD mentor who can help you. For someone to steal all your efforts after ALL the struggle, anguish, and commitment necessary to even get the idea in your head out in the first place and then have the skill to implement it in a way that WORKS at a high level is absolutely ghastly. Even more so because those BUMS know full well what it costs and how hard it is to get skilled at a comedy. Like I'm not a comic but I am a creative writer so I know full well that there HAS to be a mountain of intricacy embedded into what comics do that people outside of that craft can't fully appreciate because that's how it is with creative writing and any other craft you dare to toss a stone at. It takes a looooooong time to get good and even longer to master a craft! THEN you have to make the art! THEN you have to make it shine in your unique way! THEN you have to get it in front of people and work on it some more after you get feedback! ALL of this while you deal with your life and struggle to stay alive hoping all the time that this thing works out cause it could easily not. They didn't just steal a joke here or there. This wasn't a victimless crime! They stole the sleepless nights, effort, and TIME he devoted from his limited life! WORSE they had the audacity to do it in front of the whole world. They spit in his eye and took the food from his mouth and laughed as they did it! Shameless and foul anyone that would do that to another artist. AND THIS IS JUST WHAT THEY DO TO PEOPLE AS A TACTIC!!!!!! People like Steve Havey and Cedric the Entertainer are worthless in my eyes. It doesn't matter if you're a good entertainer if this is what you have to do to get your bread up! You are not an artist of any value and should be forgotten except as a cautionary tale of what NOT to do. Worthless...

I appreciate you guys explaining there’s a difference in similar premises versus too many similarities where it’s definitely stealing the bit. I had something similar happen to me where another female comedian tried to take one of my jokes with slightly adjusting it, but bombed horribly (while I was at the same mic!). I decided to fight fire with fire and made my joke even funnier. She never tried that joke again after the same audience laughed at MY joke. It’s definitely worse when it’s someone within your local comedy community.

Ngl that sounds like a funny rivalry story. I know its not amusing but I cant help picturing each comic fighting for approval for the same jokes. Like a tit for tat competition on who's the better comic. Cool idea for a sketch. (Someone's gonna steal that I know it)

@@HFFCANADA there’s no rivalry in stand up comedy when you’re the funnier one. 😂 I once heard Sarah Silverman say in relation to women in comedy/ comics in general, and working in the industry, “Just be funnier. It will always prevail.” Katt Williams is proof of that. No matter what has been said or done against him, his writing and performance has always prevailed.

I'm glad he said that about the black community, as I get older, I get more annoyed, we get more offended about the black people that call out the dumb shit we do, and we get labeled the bad ones. I could tell, the way Kat spoke, nothing that dude said he thought was a lie. He had conviction.

Thanks for this commentary. People who are excusing this do not understand intellectual property. They don't understand how much of your heart and soul goes into the creative process. Like Katt said, some people can't create anything. So they steal everything.
