her lowest note is an A3 at her best but her comfortable lowest note is approx would be a B3. her C6, C#6 came out with relative ease and she can produce a D6 without proper classical training. it's definitely a SOPRANO. she lowers her larynx to the hell but she has a very lyric tone so I would say she would be a lyric soprano, absolutely not a mezzo and calling her a contralto is ridicolous.

Katy is a mezzo, there are 2 types of mezzo: mezzo-soprano and mezzo-alto. Katy is mezzo-soprano which explain why she can reach some high note and in the same time having a thick timbre. Many vocal teacher i know confirm this. Voice type doesn't rely on vocal range, it depend on timbre and tessitura. For example: Beyoncé is a mezzo-sop, she can also reach F6 While Cher is a coltralto and her lowest note is only C#3 compare to both Beyoncé's(mezzo)-F2 and Mariah Carey's(soprano)-E2.

Mezzo-contralto is often describes a voice which lies between mezzo-soprano and contralto, but is not a type of a mezzo-soprano voice, which can be lyric, coloratura (these are often sinonymes, the same timbre just coloraturas are a bit lighter) and dramatic. Dramatic mezzos are also often called "mezzo-contraltos". And a real mezzo voice has a strong, powerful middle-register in the 4th octave, Katy's voice starts to sound in the 5th octave just she's untrained and lowering her larynx just like lot of sopranos in pop music (Demi Lovato, Jessie J, past-Christina Aguilera etc). Her supported lower range stops at Bb4, she cannot be a mezzo-soprano. She's an untrained lyric soprano.

And coloratura doesn't mean lighter and it's totally different from lyrics, in bel canto, coloratura is not a voice type it's singing technique, a vocalist can be called coloratura when she has done all the coloratura technique. In pop music, there is one and only one who reach the coloratura quality : Mariah Carey. Plus,there are some rare dramatic coloratura(ex : cristina deutekom-soprano), dramatic often have dark timbre, how can it be light??? There are even some rare coloratura contralto I have never heard of "mezzo-contralto" before, in both country i live(france and vietnam) but who know. Katy does have powerful mid range, her mid belt is where she use vibrato the most, the natural vibrato of her voice. From C5/C#5 and above, her vocal start to lose colour, unsupport, strain,etc And as i said, her voice is thicker than Jessie, Demi or Ari or Taylor - the real untrained soprano. Katy was trained, but she's lazy, i'm her fan from the begining
