it's one thing to release a bad song. it's another thing to release a "feminist anthem" with no depth whatsoever and have it produced by an alleged r4pist. also, it's 2024. we all know feminism isn't so simple minded. it has a lot of nuances that she could have explored. in my opinion, there is nothing wrong in wanting to sing about a human rights movement such as this one, but don't joke about it. if you want to protest, do it, but take it seriously.

The way the irony of having to dress hyper feminine and showing a lot of skin even when it's completely impractical in the first part being immediately followed by her dressing hyper feminine and showing a lot of skin in the second one was completely lost on her is so funny to me. "The male gaze is bad, which is why I'm going to cater to it even in a mv about how bad it is". We all know a shiny bra and thong are not how she dresses like in her everyday life so it's not about her being herself, it's about appealing to the general public and looking good even as she's trying to prove a point about not appealing to the general public and having to always look good.

She got the most backlash because the part of the music video where she’s deflated and reinflates herself is directly referencing Kesha’s art. It’s a piece where Kesha has a deflated version of herself and she’s lying next to the deflated balloon version of herself. The meaning being that the deflated version is how she feels after (allegedly) getting SA’ed by Dr. Luke. So not only is this music video chaotic and completely vain and the song sucks, she’s also making fun of another woman’s artistic expression on the pain she feels after getting SA’ed! So much for being pro-women’s empowerment!

I think Katy Perry is getting the brunt of fan wrath for the Dr Luke thing because: 1. In this song, she's championing feminism and girl power, and this is pretty rich coming from someone who's working with someone who (allegedly) was abusive to industry women 2. Doja Cat and some of the other artists who've recently worked with Dr Luke are more up and coming and weren't established like Perry. If you are new, young and trying to make a mark in the industry, are you going to turn down working with a premier producer who's a bonafide hitmaker for A list artists? Probably not, allegations be damned. Yet Perry is an industry veteran, more than able to work with ANYONE she wanted to. The listener has to infer that she is choosing to work with Dr Luke. 3. Yeah, I think people are just kind of sick of her at this point, sick of her incessant virtue signaling, tired of her fakeness and preoccupation with herself, and turned off by her weird antics and over-sexualized image. Her act is wearing thin and beginning to grate on some folks it seems.

My biggest complaint is that nobody explained how it turned into a woman's world and why we're supposed to be so lucky to live in it. It just doesn't add up. Guys can be sexy, confident, and smart, just like women can be all sorts of things, you know? Even the music video itself is super confusing, and I don't think women will feel empowered after hearing the song or watching it. It just seems lazy, honestly. It feels like it's aimed at white gays who watch RuPaul's Drag Race and throw around "you ate!" without really getting what it's about.

At the end of the day! Katy Perry doesn’t have any type of evolution. She doesn’t fit with anything that’s pop related today. And it’s kinda sad, especially right now when we have so many pop girlys giving up pure pop. But if I can be honest with you…… I don’t think she’s the artist behind the music….. she found a formula and has been stuck in it. Evolution should be natural and inspirational but I’m just not sure what exactly inspired this. Why couldn’t she make a video featuring women from all media that has influenced her…….. This over sexuality and all of this nonsense that at times comes off as fake, has no space in this music climate.

I’ll say here what I said to a friend when they asked my opinion about it: the music video “Satisfaction” by Benny Benassi did the whole “sexualized female construction workers” satire waaay better, because it wasn’t trying to be this huge feminist statement. The juxtaposition of heavily sexualized women doing pretty decent construction work while the text on the screen shows all the specifications of the tools they’re using is hilarious, and I’m saying this as both a woman and a feminist. Like, if you gonna go with that kind of imagery, either go ham or don’t do it at all. It’s not feminist to make something ridiculous as this then hide under the guise of “satire” so you can claim it’s feminist. “Never half ass two things, whole ass one thing.” -Ron Swanson

She needs a better lyricist and producers helping her with her songs. For sure. She definitely comes across as tying too hard. That never works. And she seems to think that she needs "influencer" help to reach a greater audience. She needs to just try to figure out who she is and play to that, instead of trying to make something she thinks will work. The "message" she's maybe trying to see with this song/video is very confusing.

Putting Dr Luke aside. I think the other issue is the fact Katy doesn’t appear to know who her demographic audience are anymore. I was 14 when she came onto the scene back in 07/08 and believe she was a hit with people mostly around the ages of 8-20is let’s say. Fast forward a lot of those people now are well into their mid 20s to early 30s. Music taste changes throughout the years and if you’re not willing to adapt, you may get lost in translation. A lot of people that age now are more interested in the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Charlie XcX and so on. Perry is very much stuck in the late 00s, early 10s.
@stutter_boxАй бұрын
I’d go even further in saying she’s never really known who her audience is or should be. This is where the lack of a musical style or stamp comes in, because I see her as a literal fabricated product to appeal to the mainstream, and because it lacks that identity, no one really sticks around to support her in the long-term

I think she did have a viewpoint and artistic direction that created a public image and idea of who she is for her first two to three albums and then maybe she started to lose that curated image and sound and go with what her team thinks would be best .
