The film keeps him separate from them as although he is part of the robbery he truly isnt a robber like they are, they rob because they hope to get rich, he drives to make a living. You will notice to that he is never shot in the same frame as them. Just another simple feature that makes Drive a classic movie

I get you and the only conclusion I can make is that with the lighting effect you cannot even see Driver's face in that frame, so in a way he isn't captured in the same frame. Darkness. One that is contagious and infectious. You hate it but it keeps pulling you back in, nobody wants to listen to you, nobody cares about you, and nobody likes you. Once you start realising and noticing those things- that's when the darkness swoops in and before you know it- you are broken, jaded and void of any emotion. This is the norm now, this is how life has become. But it doesn't have to be. I'm in a position mentally and emotionally where I can say that that Ryan Gosling from Drive is literally me.
