For Rajini fans outside Tamil Nadu - Before this function, Balachandar sir called and asked me to attend this function. I was not sure, about what I should say. Attending this Function is like going to shooting for me. I get tense just before acting in the scene and the same way here. I am speaking last and I forgot what to say. People think that there is competition or jealousy between me and Kamal. Balanchander sir asked me to come to this function to clarify that there is no competition or jealousy between Kamal and Rajini and both are like his two eyes. Between us there is brotherhood, love and affection. Ponnagai Mannan (king of smiles)- Before every movie, Balachander sir gets tensed and feverish. Padmashree, an established director, still gets tensed before the movie release. There are reasons for that. Kamal Hassan acted in sakala kala vallavan, Kalyana raman etc. Image in audience is that he is a fantastic actor. The movie made by Balachandar sir still needs to have that impression of a balachander movie. Artist and star are different. Stars are made by the audience. Star need not necessarily be a good actor. Good actor need not be a huge star. Kamal is both. Kamal has his own style. Ponnagai Mannan is a very Intelligent character. Kamal acted superb in it. Kamal is not just a good man, he is also a good actor, dancer, and stunt man. Stunt men don't have jobs if kamal is acting in that movie. Dupes wont have work. Balachander sir observed that Kamal is doing all the jump, stunt activities himself. That is one tension. Pre release feedback. There is a tradition to show the movie to selected people before release and to get their reactions. The reaction in the preview for this movie is that everybody just smiles. If they say the movie will go 25 weeks , then it might not even go 2 weeks. If they say a movie won't run even 2 weeks, then it will run 25 weeks. Audience judgement is gods judgement. The preview feedback was like - Climax need to be changed etc. Another tension is censorship. At the last moment, they asked to cut a few scenes. During Deepavali time, in the midst of 10 other movies, punnagai mannan (king of smiles) turned to vasool mannan (king of collections). The Reason for the huge success is Balancahndar story, direction, kamal hassan superb action. Recently in north indian magazine - kamal hassan is described as actors actor. After seeing this movie, I understood why. Whole india too no other artist would not even imagined to play such a character. He acted wonderfully. Charlie Chaplin has a smile in face. Once upon a time shivaji ganeshan is actors actor. Now, Kamal hassan is actors actor. Shivajis walk, smile, style then; now it is kamal hassan. Sivaji was an institution. Kamal is today’s institution. Photography, music, choreography, acting - everything is excellent. I will end my speech now and namaste for everyone.
