0:00 - Video Introduction on The Kawai CN301
0:32 - Playing Demo
1:08 - Spec Rundown
3:49 - Sound Review
6:16 - Stu’s Take on the sound of the Kawai CN301
14:12 - Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a “pro-sumer” level digital piano, a quality piano that doesn’t cost thousands of dollars, then the Kawai CN301 may be the right instrument for you.
We’ll give it a listen, and then look at its specifications, touch and tone.
Spec Rundown
Action
The Kawai CN301 uses the RH III action that incorporates a triple sensor with a Let-Off mechanism, as well as counterweights, plus improved engineering that includes a more reinforced back hinge as well as improved key cushioning along with many other features.
Pedals
The 301 includes the grand feel pedal system, matching the feel and function of the pedals on a grand piano.
Tone Engine and Piano Tones
The tone engine is the Progressive Harmonic Imaging Engine, which includes 88 key stereo sampling, 256 note polyphony, and the original SK-EX sample set along with the SK5, the EX and the K60 upright. In addition to the four base sample sets are nine iterations of those samples for a total of 13 piano patches.
Other Tones
The CN301 also comes with 32 extra instrumental sounds, including electric pianos, strings, vocal pad and bass among others.
Tone Editing, Reverb and Effects
There are 21 parameters you can edit including four modelled resonance engines. Also included are six reverb types and 24 additional effect types you can apply.
Speakers and Amps
The CN301 is driven by a pair of 20 Watt amplifiers that deliver sound through four speakers; two downward-facing woofers, and two top-facing two-way speakers with a 360-degree diffuser.
Headphones
Like its CN201 smaller cousin, the CN301 includes an updated spacial headphone technology and five headphone EQ types.
Size
The CN301 weighs in at 105 pounds with a length, width and height of 55.5 x 17.3 x 34.25 inches.
Standard Functions
The functionality of the CN301 includes dual mode, split mode, forehand mode, transpose, tuning, touch curve editing, metronome and a basic internal recorder.
Recording and Connectivity
The CN301 can record and playback both WAV and MP3 and is equipped with Bluetooth, MIDI and audio connections. There are two headphone jacks, ¼” and ⅛”, USB A and B ports as well as left and right ¼” audio output and input jacks.
Available Finishes
The CN301 is available in three finishes; premium Rosewood, Satin Black and Satin White.
Sound Review
One of the main features of the SK-EX sample set is that Kawai does not filter or compress any of the samples to make them smaller, preserving all of the information in each sample. This combined with the four resonance engines generates the most complete and authentic acoustic piano sound.
Spec Wrap-up
Every piano has something that stands out as soon as you play it. On the CN301, the combination of the RH III action and the new speaker setup gives you an incredible amount of nuance and control from the pianissimo range up to the mezzo-forte range without having to tweak any settings, use the soft pedal or adjust the volume. This is something that you would expect from top-end digital pianos, and this ability to appropriately mimic the dynamic expression of an acoustic piano has eluded many digital pianos for many years.
Where the CN301 stands out from the CN39 is the tightness of the bass, the clarity of the treble, the balance between the two and the stereo image. It is so well executed that you don’t even think about it, creating a true musical connection.
Second, the refinement in the RH III action is to the point where the control you get and the sense of weight you get are really satisfying. If you like a medium or slightly heavier than medium weighting to a key, then you will prefer this action.
Third, Kawai has created a very specific system EQ which prevents the cabinet from being overly resonant and ensures that the cabinet and speakers are never working against one another or creating uneven sonic experiences depending on the volume or range that you are playing.
Finally, even with the volume near the maximum, the treble never becomes shrill, metallic or brassy due to the upgraded DSP and the physical diffusers on the upward-facing speakers.

Played it today and just loved the piano, and only after hearing from Stu about the dynamic range I realized why. I think compared to my Yamaha YDP 144 the ability to control the softness of sound based on key pressure is amazing. The notes come out so much clearer too. Volume at different ranges is consistent and does not drop off for higher pitches like it does with my current piano (I don't use headphones). Tried today a bunch of different pianos including the Kawaii CA901 (did not like the lightness of the keys), but this one seems to fit like a glove. Very interesting. I think I'm in love with this instrument.

was planning on buying a digital piano at some point this year and I had my eye on the cn29/39 but with this new line, well, I think I'll be going with the 301 when the time comes. I had been keeping my eye on the Yamaha p515 as well but I really don't like heavy action all that much, I currently have an old p140 and it's super heavy as well.

Stu, as a general comment pertaining to all your reviews, I would love to hear a few recognizable songs rather than just noodling around. Perhaps a classical piece, a jazz standard, and a pop tune. If you don't have time to do the entire song, at least do half so we can hear the instrument in a genre most of us would want to play in. I love your descriptions as to what you're feeling and the astectics of the instruments. Playing actual songs or partials of them would make your reviews more complete, informative and enjoyable.

I always appreciate the quality of your reviews, so helpful. I have a question/suggestion: whenever somebody asks for a recommendation for a digital piano, there are ALWAYS those who say "Nothing beats an acoustic". In your reviews, would it be possible to give an indication of where a given digital sits in relation to a particular acoustic, perhaps in terms of an equivalent budget?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the suggestion. I will certainly pass it along to Stu and the production team. Ultimately, the acoustic and digital piano worlds are very different and, as such, it is difficult to always use the analogy of where a certain piano sits and how that analogically translates to the opposing piano market (acoustic or digital). With that said, we will definitely discuss the idea I'm sure. :)

Hi Stu, this one blows my mind: I found I can use one single USB cable, to connect the Roland FP-90X to the MacBook. So the MIDI signal goes to the MacBook, and the Pianoteq, Kontakt Player etc, can output the waveform audio immediately back to the Roland speakers, at 60W. So I really don't need any audio interface box or big speakers like the Yamaha HS8. All I need is one cable. It is said that many Roland and Yamaha digital pianos have this feature (the audio USB part), but Kawai doesn't have it yet).
@mfurman
@mfurman Жыл бұрын
You are perfectly right. Digital Audio Interface is very important for me too (I very much like one cable connection to my piano VSTs). I am surprised that Stu never talks about this feature of Yamaha and some Roland digital pianos (only Roland newer portable digital pianos have it). By the way, I have Yamaha P-515.
@MerriamPianos

Hi! Brent here! I am glad that you have found a solution that works for you with your FP90X setup. The USB audio interface is certainly a handy feature for these types of situations. :)

Recently that's what has been going on with my DGX-670 / Pianoteq system. The Pianoteq voice comes through the USB cable to the Yamaha's amplifiers and speakers. I give a high rating to the internal audio reinforcement of the DGX. I'm a Linux user, and a think a few months ago this ability came to Linux as it is now using some form or upgraded audio, and even that improves with each upgrade of Manjaro which is a rolling release that upgrades quite frequently.
@mdezwart
@mdezwart 5 ай бұрын
The only thing you need in addition to that single USB-cable is an audiocable from you Macbook to audio-in of the Kawai CN 301. What I think is strange is that the Kawai CA 401 doesn't have audio in or out, so in that case you can't use the setup you mentioned. None of the Kawai's had USB audio in/out.

Hey! Thanks for the great review. I can get the CN301 for 1500€ which is only +300€ compared to CN201 and seems a good vale. The piano would be placed in the living room so aesthetics are also a factor, I have not had the chance to see the pianos in person but the cloth for the top speakers does not look great compared to a full wooden top (CN201), plus the CN301 is also bigger. I wonder what’s your view on this and whether the sound improvement is still worth the compromise (obviously a personal thing). Thanks

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the question! I totally understand your points about aesthetics. I have had a few customers lean towards the CN201 over the CN301 for that very reason in fact. With that said, the sonic experience that the CN301 provides is a meaningful step up from the CN201 (which is saying something considering how good the CN201 sounds). It all comes down to a matter of subjectivity and personal priorities of course. :)

@MerriamPianos

Hi! Brent here! It is a matter of personal choice ultimately. With that said, I personally feel that the difference and improvement between the KDP120 and CN201 is more pronounced than the CN201 and CN301. The RHIII action and superior piano sound is a meaningful upgrade from the already fantastic KDP120. In terms of the CN301, it is essentially a more premium version of the CN201. If the extra power and features is appealing, it is certainly worth consideration. :)

@@MerriamPianos I am also interested in this comparison. Because I specifically wonder how much the PHI incarnation on the Cn-301 differs from the Hi-XL on the ES-920. I have the feeling that , in practice , they seem to deliver the exact same sonic experience and that the PHI versus HI-XL between these two models is more marketing speak than any real (!) difference in used sound engine. Wouldn't even be surprised if they are the same and just the label differs...any thought on that ? Also the speaker sound comparison between the two is interesting. The ES-920 with full stand and pedal set is similar in use and price range to the CN-301. So the comparison seems legit to me.

I'm currently looking at buying either the ES920 or CN301. I'm liking the 'sound' of the extra cushioning (and less risk of speaker buzz) of the CN301 but if the ES920 is sonically clearly better, I might still choose that one.

I could never compare them in person , but from the experience of other people I understand that the ES sounds more direct en brilliant / clear over speakers. About the softer cushioning of the keys ; I really don’t know. And I also don’t take the word of Kawai for it. Would have to try and compare that myself. For sonic clearity I understand the ES is the winner (over speakers). But that is just from the experience of others. Haven’t tried the CN myself …

@@joepfruman1111 Thanks for your reply. Ok, well, I'll just have to compare them in person then I suppose. I don't actually 'need' the cabinet style of the CN301 (it will not be placed in the living room but in a small practice room since I already have an old acoustic as 'main' piano) but if the playing experience is better, either because of keys being quieter or the enclosure being less prone to rattling/buzzing etc., then I can see myself still going for it. At the same time, if the sonic qualities of the ES920 are markedly better/more exciting, then that's a big plus too. Long story short, I'll have to try myself. :)

For a good intermediate player that studied as a child/teen and wants to return to playing and improve in the long term, would you say the extra cost of the CN301 is justified? It seems like it is the complete package for a proper digital piano without spending a fortune. But then again, I guess even KDP120 does the job? I just want the best acoustic imitation possible for my money, in terms of sound and action, I'm so confused haha

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thank you for tuning in and writing in with your question! At the end of the day, choosing an instrument is a very personal decision. The CN201 and CN301 have a lot of parallels and overlapping elements of course, but the CN301 is certainly a more premium version of the CN line. I would say that, if the budget permits, the sonic experience and additional features the CN301 offers is well-worth the extra investment. However, if additional speaker power and sonic richness is not the biggest concern and you are mainly focused on the touch, the CN201 is a wonderful, more economical solution. Thanks and all the best!

@@MerriamPianos Thank you very much. I'd really appreciate it if you could answer 2 more questions: -in this price range there is also Yamaha CLP 725, any thoughts on how it compares with the Kawais in terms of sound? -Will all of these good quality digital pianos last about a decade, or will the action deteriorate in less time? Thank you again for your time

I love your videos but i cant really decide on an upgrade for my FP10 i bought 4 years ago as my 2nd piano. My budget is 2000€ at max and im searching for a acoustic piano substitute in a stationary setting that will hopefully last me for the next decade. I struggle choosing between the Kawai ES120 (600€), KDP120 (900€), Yamaha YDP-165 (1100€), the CN201/CN301 (1300/1600€), CA401 (1900€) or some other not listend around 1500€ preferably. Is the upgrade for the higher priced ones really worth it or am i just getting a little bit of a better product for couple hundreds more? What would you recommend me in my situation? Im playing for 8 years now and im looking for good piano for the coming years. I would really appreciate your advice.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for reaching out with your question! For what it's worth, I don't think the ES120, KDP120, or YDP165 models would be a substantial upgrade from the FP10 given your level of experience. While all of these pianos will offer a better sonic experience than the FP10, you will likely find that the actions (arguably the most important component of a digital piano given that it is the invariable element) are a downgrade. To that point, the CN201, CN301, and CA401 would be what I recommend as the options worth considering given your budget. The CN201 and CN301 are quite comparable in terms of the core piano experience, but the CN301 is the premium version (more built-in sounds/features, more powerful speaker system, etc.). If you are going to be enjoying the piano primarily via headphones or at lower volumes, the CN201 would be the most logical choice. However, if you are looking to optimize the playing experience within your budget, the CA401 is certainly worth consideration. The all-wooden key stick of the Grand Feel Compact action provides an impressively-authentic touch. Thanks and hope this helps!
@Rouven506
@Rouven506 2 ай бұрын
@@MerriamPianos Thank you so much, that already helped alot. What bothers me most about the fp10 is the speaker system. I notice a huge difference when I play with headphones instead of speakers. At higher volumes I think it sounds really awful and I seem to like the Kawai sound better than the Roland. If I'm not mistaken, the CA401 and CN301 don't really differ from each other in terms of sound and speakers, or not at all, and I would tend to go for the CN301 then. Or is there another gem below 2000€ you would recommend, that i maybe didnt mention?

Could you please comment on the difference in touch between the CA401 and the CN301? - I find the 401 lighter
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 11 ай бұрын
We have not received our first shipment of CA401 pianos here in Canada yet, but, given that it uses the same action as the CA49, I can comment based on that experience. The CN301's RHIII action (new generation with additional padding) feels a bit firmer and less bouncy, which may or may not be the preference for some players. I personally find the weighting to be fairly similar, but I would agree that the GFC feels may a hair lighter on the fingers.

@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
The onboard speaker system on the CN301 is quite impressive. As was the case with the CN201 versus the CN29, it seems that Kawai has further refined the speaker system and resultant sound. It is difficult to capture and do it justice for the sake of a video as the room and microphones you use will inevitably colour the sound.

I was watching a technical description of the Yamaha NS-5000 speakers ($15,000 pair of speakers) in the Audioholics channel. The speakers are worth as much as the most expensive hybrid piano, and that's not including the amplifiers. I wonder how digital pianos would sound through a state-of-the-art speaker system. 🎵🎵
@JoeLinux2000
@JoeLinux2000 Жыл бұрын
@@Instrumental-Covers It could make a lot of difference or not much. It could actually be worse. Digital pianos are kind of strange ducks. They don't need large speakers to sound good. In fact too large of a woofer can make them sound less realistic; too boomy and lacking the upper harmoinics essental for the sound of true piano bass strings when struck forcefully. I'm wondering in the plastic defusers play a significant role in mellowing out the tone. The upper treble now has become the most difficult area to get really right. Stu talks about that a bit in this video. My latest tweak is to cut back on the DGX voice slightly and boost the Pianoteq voice slightly while sharpening the last octave and a half or so of the Pianoteq voice's treble. The overall sound has once again been improved. The harmonics of the lower notes are more in accord with the upper treble section. I think tuned audio will be the trick with these digital pianos. It's not simply the audio sample or modeling or just the audio reinforcement system itself, but how harmonious is the marriage of the two. Digitals are clearly getting better and better and have surpassed acoustics in most use cases within a home environment or for that matter any smaller room.

It is similar in terms of the fact that it is a fully-loaded digital piano with all of the bells and whistles. With that said, there is a difference in the action (RHIII plastic key action versus GFC all-wooden key action) and tone engine. For me, the CA59 is still a more premium instrument, which is saying something because the CN301 is incredible! :)

I've been enjoying these videos since the very start of lockdown. However (and I'm sorry for the negativity that follows) the recently adopted style of editing is unwelcome. To me it feels frenetic, rushed, flashy even. As if the instrument being reviewed is not as worthy of consideration as previous models where a more leisurely approach was taken. Stu's reviews are a rare pleasure. Let's have the real thing not the highlights package.
