Whats that hole in the primary case? Looks like rthe oil fill bolt is missing!

That's the oil level sight glass! Oil fill cap is on other side, and is in place.

How does this compare to the newer ones?

No comparison, the 1400 is light years ahead. With the 1000 you get old school, but proven and reliable technology. More than enough power, fast enough, does everything well but nothing great. Engine good for over 200,000km easily. One of a few bikes to become a legend in its own time. Money not being an issue, I chose a mint 2006 Concours 1000 with only 18,000km over a new 2018 Concours 1400. The 1000 has the reliability I wanted, and if you do run into an issue on the road you can deal with it yourself. Lack of electronic this and that is a blessing in my mind, less to fail. Sometimes less is indeed more.
