Compression check on boths cylinders to make sure the engine is sound mechanically
@motorcyclerescuer

Yes thats the next step. I'm thinking it's a badly timed spark from the cdi, but will check compression as I'm also thinking bent/sticky valve

Possibly cdi but, logically, I would start with a carb rebuild. Both side spark and, if they have compression, it would point towards fuel and air I think.
@motorcyclerescuer

Compression check next then I think. I was going towards a badly timed spark issue so cdi problem, but be nuts not to check the compression.
@lancashirebiker6200
@lancashirebiker6200 3 жыл бұрын
I would do a compression test you may have bent valves due to setting the valve timing incorrectly.
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes thats my thoughts aswell. Compression check will be next. It kinda has the symptoms of a bent valve because it kinda spits back into the carb which could indicate a open valve at the wrong time.

@Darryl Bedford oh really, I think I'm going to try a cdi first just incase. Is your bike running lumpy like mine after this mistake?
@just4kicks950

Wish I knew the answer Charlie, possibly carb issues & as far as timing, I steer clear unless it's a single cylinder engine. Good luck with the bike my friend 🤞Salute 🛵😎

I'm sure the carbs are OK but may rebuild them anyway. Someone gas suggest cdi. So may look into that. Sadly it cost .only trying all these but that's the way I guess.

I'm thinking CDI and possible carb rebuild, going back to Sue's ER5 didn't you upgrade something with the fuel system? I've not tracked back but was curious to think it could need the same as I think hers wasn't running right to begin with... it screams fuel I think but be interested to see what it is when it's solved! Great video Charlie!

Its so annoying cause I'm going back and forward in my head. So I cleaned the carbs including the float valves but didn't check the float heights which is a rookie error. Although it's easy to pop them of and check again. I don't think they need a rebuild but i will do one. I've got float height in my head, cdi or bent valve/valves
@fabrocal
@fabrocal 3 жыл бұрын
You need to reassemble the e-vac air system first. Then adjust idle/air mixture
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that but its a lumpy engine anyway even with that in place. It had these symptoms when it was all in place. I'm thinking bent valve, bad carbs or cdi issue

cdi for sure had the same problem
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
No way? It makes sense cause it times the spark. We're your symptoms similar? I was going down the carb rebuild route but maybe it should be cdi first.

I think its jetting fuel / air charlie I heard no misfire but it did sound a bit chattery like it wasn't quite getting enough of something probably fuel as if it needed more air it would run better with the pipe open. maybe float operation?.
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about float heights aswell. I should have had a quick check when I had them off but forgot if I'm being honest
@LeeKirkman88
@LeeKirkman88 3 жыл бұрын
@@motorcyclerescuer Well the vaccum gage test on one side was up and down and the chattering would seem to suggest the fuel delivery is up and down one minute its getting enough the next its getting very little. I maybe way off but i would look at the carbs.
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeeKirkman88 if one of the valves was stuck open even fully or partially then this would blow air back through the Carb on explosion giving the same reading. I'll do a compression test soon I think and this should rule out engine and valve issues. Fingers crossed.

Charlie when you set valves at C did you rotate 180 to T and set the other cylinder? Zl600 syndrome lol
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 3 жыл бұрын
I set the clearances by rotating the lobe so it was 180 away from the plate. Its quicker and easier. They should be set correctly and the timing is spot on. In my head I'm thinking badly timed spark because of cdi? Or sticky valve?

@@motorcyclerescuer in group someone mentioned that they had the same issue and it was the cdi.
@IPCRo

Did the same for my gpz 500s (same engine) and it could be the spark plug problem. On mine I can't put it to "C" as it would not turn all the way (probably hitting a valve) and I put on "T".
@motorcyclerescuer
@motorcyclerescuer 6 ай бұрын
It's ment to be on T though isn't it?
@IPCRo
@IPCRo 6 ай бұрын
@@motorcyclerescuer I mean, I havent got the time to start it but in Haynes manual it says that you should put it on C. But I've seen a lot of bikes set on T and running like a new bike. I guess the magneto notations could be different on some models and that's why. If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask me.

Hi Rob, the intermittent spark issue? I think in the end it was a dud spark plug. Possibly a fake or broken one. I had tried everything else by then so it was the last resort and i was dead set that they were OK because they were new. But lots of fakes out there now days. I hope this helps

@motorcyclerescuer

It sounds like it's not running well then. Not necessarily spark related, it could be carb related etc. Check your intake boots for splits as it could be letting in to much air

@@motorcyclerescuer thanks for your reply, its a long story, just replaced inlet valves because they where bent, it runs great without load, next step to do compression test if that’s ok recheck valve timing but I was very careful when I put the head on!

I had sticky or bent valve in mind. I was thinking badly timed spark aswell though, so cdi? Its only dome 27k so shouldn't have any valve issues yet really. I'll throw a compression check on in the next vid, that would help clear it up I think
