This is great! I just bought my friend's '74 Kz400, and he'd taken the head off to replace the oil blow-by and never got around to finishing it. So I just need to replace the head gaskets, put the timing chain back on, and then the head. So I'm glad I found this vid.

Yeah. That's not how you set the timing on a kz400

this is wrong i have a kz 440 and the camshaft has a arrow that has to be pointed to the front of the bike and be flush with the bike heads and to have it on the "T" on the crankshaft ,just refer to the manual google it

Agree. I've got a KZ400 and can confirm it's the same. He actually shows the arrow but it's pointing to the rear rather than the front, so this is 180° off.

Awesome, thanks! You should make a video about how to adjust the contact points on this bike and engine...because I'm having problems with mine. I know it's suppose to be at .14mm at full open. My bike was running but i replaced the right side cover gasket because it was leaking oil and now I can't to get it running. Im guessing it's due to the point contact. I noticed the Carb is spitting out gas when I kick it...but that is all about that happens. please help if you can. Thanks

You really ought to get a manual. This is nonsense.

I Have an 81 kz750, would setting the timing be similar if not the same?

Do you own the shop manual? Wrong.

no problem

its actually all the same....same exact timing position just added 2 extra cylinders... once timing is set turn over by hand before you kick start or electric start to make sure it will crank over properly...
