This was a nice change from the normal fountain pen reviews. I appreciate a good mechanical pencil just as much as a good fountain pen. I would encourage you to take a look at the TWSBI mechanical pencils. They are easily my favorite mechanical pencils to use.

Mechanical pencils in a 2.0mm lead size are more typically of the type known as "clutch" pencils, where the lead is held in place by vice-like jaws that protrude from the nose (3 or 4 jaws normally). This style shown is sometimes referred to as an automatic clutch pencil, as it does still have those jaws but they're inside the mechanism and extend the lead in pre-determined increments just like conventional mechanical/propelling pencils.

A 2mm clutch pencil is in my daily carry bundle. The Great thing about 2mm leads, they hardly ever break and last ages.

Der Stephen Thank you for the nice review. Great even if you are not a pencil guy. I love your drawings... :) By the way you dont have to screw the top part off. Just pull. There are also other lead sizes available: 0.5 , 0.7 and 0.9. In all lead sizes is an eraser included but not in the 2.0. There are sharpeners for 2.0 but not from Kaweco at the moment. The lead is real graphite and not a plastic/graphite mix. The rattling in this case is really annoying. I think this is the old production lot. It is improved now and with the new version there should be no more rattling.

I just purchased the kaweco sport mechanical pencil, same lead size. I thought I could use the mechanical pencil sharpener I already own but discovered the lead is to thick. Do you know of any options for sharpening the lead?

Great to see you branching out and I'm glad you like the pencil so much - as a real fan of mechanical pencils and clutch pencils, I just sent my Kaweco 2.0 back because I hated it. It doesn't feel heavy enough compared to other pencils, nor does it draw as well as more specialised instruments such as the Pentel Graphgear 1000, or look and feel as good as the Pentel S20 wood version. Also, did you not notice the constant rattling as you wrote? That was driivng me mad. You can get clutch pencils up to 5.6mm if you like a thicker lead too. Still, its a cool freebie to have got from Kaweco, its a pretty pricey pencil, after all!

Very enjoyable review - especially as I use mechanical pencils as my alternative to fountain pens. For reasons I don't understand I have very neat handwriting underhand ( as a leftie ) with a mechanical pencil but not with a fountain pen. However, I write overhand with my fountain pens which gives me a very different style which pleases me. ( Biro's may be convenient but I never like the end result if I have to write more than a sentence.)

As a Romanian I would have to recommend a sterling silver pen / pencil for staking vampires, this also works but requires a lot of accuracy

I use these for drawing. I sharpen the end of my 2mm lead with a knife just like any art pencil. Except you don't have to deal with the wood shavings :p.

Hi Steve - nice change of pace. Interesting how thin the line looked for a 2.0 lead. Next time you review a mechanical pencil, you could recreate some of your biology lessons. Ever take any mechanical drawing? Having a Pentel when I did drafting would have been great!

There are a lot of very good mechanical pencil out the. Faber-Castel makes some good one.They had been the first ones, who made pencils in Germany in 1761 and short after came Johann Staedtler back in 1835.Caran d´Ache (which means Pencil in russia )makes very good ones too (the Fixpencil 22). 2mm are the normal sizes of leads in wooden pencils.

I never liked mechanical pencils because of the lead breakage problem and the difficulty in carrying it in your pocket or bag. You had to use a pencil case. The 0.7mm is barely useable in my heavy hand. What really sold me on your 2.0 was the part at 6:47. That instrument truly does write like a regular pencil.

William Albert Lead technology has gone some way, though. Check out "Ain Stein" lead made by Pentel of Japan. It's actually surprisingly strong (and also a little expensive) and I find I can be as ham-fisted as I like and it never breaks, especially in 0.7mm.
@gammondog
@gammondog 9 жыл бұрын
Yes! I have noticed that. Forty years ago my pencil case was littered with broken off fragments of lead which I would try to recycle into the barrel of the mechanical pencil. These days my Pentel 0.7mm rarely snaps off or fragments in the holder, even if dropped. Still,I will rarely use my 0.5 mm. My 0.7mm gets used on my wall calendar or for when I'm learning something new by writing it over several times.

Looks wonderful for sketching and gesture drawing. I wonder if there's a "pointer" available. I think Kaweco was wise to send it to you, Stephen, because they know you do fair reviews and even better if you're NOT a "mechanical pencil guy"...they get another viewpoint, non? Great review. I now want one. :-) I was going to ask if there's an eraser, but I prefer to use a kneaded eraser anyway. But it would be cool to have one on the pencil in emergencies.

Lets note that this lead holder is for artistic purposes, so the things of note would be the grip in all positions, the mechanism's sturdiness, and such. I don't quite feel this was you're field of expertise and I'm not quite sure what Kaweco was thinking sending this to you other than to get the word out that they make one. The more useful things that could've been touched on would be if the lead moves when you draw or if the lead they have is of quality over other brands, but of course if its just cool to have a 2mm mechanical pencil then all the power to you but the purpose of the pencil and what the review was talking about was most probably misleading to people not familiar with your content. Edit: to be clear 2mm lead holders are alternatives to wood so you don't have to deal with length and sharpening issues.

It rattles like crazy when you write, I wonder if it's the cap or the lead mechanism? These look good for writing and maybe sketching too. For any kind of drawing though, I would only suggest the Faber Castell TK 9400/ TK 4600.
