RIP Kay, thank you for always raising concerns and bringing back memories of the nearby fisheries. She raises so many good points on the need for best practices on conservation and studying of the ecosystems nearby. It is true that aquaculture can change from year to year (ie storms and currents shifting the shape of the riverbed or ocean floor, eelgrass changing, etc) but to change from having an over abundance of cod to not having a single one should be alarming. Let alone, several other species that no longer dwell the area.

She was a great, and wise woman. It's still a legendary tackle shop

The menhaden have been back in big numbers for the past 5 or 6 years. I'll have to keep my eyes open for subtle changes in the river. Thanks, RIP.

Kay, it was great to see this. Brings back memories. Good friends of mine and I started coming down to Plum Island to fish in 71 or 72. We'd drive down late Friday or Saturday nights after work to fish Kettle hole on the refuge as walk ons. You'd leave out a couple dozen sea worms for us. I had to laugh a couple years ago. I was back in the area, went in your shop to pick up some bait and the young (30s'... sigh..) clerk told me he'd never heard of a spot on the refuge called Kettle Hole. Oh well. I am hoping to get out to the island this fall to try out the fall striper fishing... Best wishes to you and family.

God am I homesick. What the hell did I move to this state for? I''ll take the ocean over a paycheck any day, Just as I was ready to move back, cancer got me. I survived, and I haven't given up hope. It may take a while but I will be surf fishing again.
