Trolling without lanyard attached is crazy. Easy to fall of when moving about as you were and ski keeps going. Kill switch/ start key must be connected when underway.

I fish a decent distance offshore solo, so because of the risk of sucking up line into the impeller I only fish one line at a time. If the line gets remotely close to the ski, I instantly turn off the engine. Similarly, as soon as I hook a fish the engine is turned off. I've heard some fishos will carry a snorkel + mask + dive knife and have managed to cut the line out while offshore (though not without its own risks as well!).

Thanks for the comment Dave. My ski has only sucked up my line twice in 18 months.. The first time was was my first fishing trip out on the ski, and the second time at Palmy. I have been quite careful to this point, but obviously not careful enough. From now on, I will disconnect the key when fishing to be 110% sure this will never happen again. We live and learn. Tight lines.

my engine wouldn't start due to a battery issue... therefore, if the trolling motor was connected to the battery, it wouldn't start either and won't make any difference. From my experience, there is NO substitute to VMR. VMR service is reliable and affordable.

All boats should an epirb at the very least. Especially if you go out alone. Next a radio and then a cell. I used to take my 21’ offshore 50 miles. Didn’t have cell phones back then but had a good radio and an epirb. There was no rescue back then except the coast guard or another vessel.

It's a no brainer...engine on, lanyard on. If trolling you never stop forward motion with a fish on...once landed you can click it in neutral or shut it down. I think a lot of KZbinrs concentrate too much on the camera instead of what they need to be mindful of.

@Jackspratcouldeatnofat I've never fished off a Boston Whaler, but I'm sure it must be a great experience. Fishing off the Seadoo Fishpro has it's pros and cons. But I think the pro's out weigh the cons. These days with the rise is the cost of fuel, it only costs me $50-$60 per day trip, it's easy to tow around, it's got a lot of power, it can handle swell, I can take the family out and tow the kids on an inflatable 4 man tube and much more.

Hi Hector, too fast! I've been told you shouldn't be towed more than 6 knots. Anymore than 6 knots, your engine gets flooded. Once that happens, you won't be able to start your engine and need to take your jet ski to a machanic immediately to have the engine removed and flushed out.

The Seadoo Fishpro has an inbuilt trolling mode that you can preset the trolling speed. But the lowest troll speed you can set (I think) is 3 knots.

did you close off your water intake hose while you were towed so fast home ???
@JohnCanFishTV
@JohnCanFishTV Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this was the first time I was towed home and I did not know that being towed over 8 knots will food the engine. I only found out when I got it onto the trailer, then back home to give it a good flush... Only to realise that it wouldn't start anymore (it was flooded.... Oouch!). So, I called JSW and told them the situation, and they told me to bring it in immediately as a flooded engine with salt water will cause big problems. Likely for me, they checked it out and didn't have to pull the engine out (I think this would have costed me $400-$500). So they checked it out and luckily it started for them and they didn't have to pull out the engine. So, they just offered to do my regular service (which wasn't due for another 5 months). I didn't mind it as I wanted to be on the safe side. @Peter - how to you cap off the water intake? I think it would be important for everyone to know.

I suppose fitting a mesh type cover for stopping things like rope and fishing lines wouldn’t work because plastic bags and similar would not suck thru and would block it from getting water. Anyone agree/ disagree ?
@JohnCanFishTV
@JohnCanFishTV 4 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, thank you so much for your comment! My Seadoo Fishpro has an iDF system. It allows us to clear clogged intakes without getting wet with the push of a button. Therefore, it can clear out plastic bags, sea weed, etc from the intake. However, ropes, fishing line & cast nets is a totally different beast as it can easily get wrapped up around drive shaft. I think Seadoo or ANYONE (with engineering skills) can invent a strong plastic mould grill plate that would solve this fishing line issue and not affect water intake will make a bunch of $$$ (if patented right).

@@JohnCanFishTV Yes it's concerning as I've just got a Yamaha FX and put some second hand Tubbies on it. But that problem seems to be where outboards have it over Jetski's. Also in thinking of going out in it and observing others when taking a look at the people doing it when you can see them from land 99% of the time they are in groups. I hardly know anyone that does it, let along be able to do it at the same time as the ones you know. Being by yourself is always concerning, a bit of a worry. Can feel safer in a kayak, no mechanical issues to worry about. Let alone get a suitable window in the weather and swell. I'm at Noosa. Plus Jetski's seem to be hated by most rich yuppies that want everything banned in our river because they don't use the river like us (and the young idiots that abuse Jetski's here) and so forth etc. Cheers

@@mickallan2071 I've only been Jetski Fishing solo... even at night! But, you just need to always be aware of all the possible issues and have the right safety gear. If I get stuck, I call Volunteer Marine Rescue Southport (I'm a paying member... well worth every dollar). I call them with my mobile phone as there is mobile coverage up to 24fathoms. However, I've started to fish around 36 fathoms lately, and their is no mobile coverage. I didnt know that until one day the engine wouldnt start (I even have two marine batteries linked up for safety). So, I ended up buying a VHF Marine Handheld radio. A good one with 5watt transmit power. It's a Uniden MHS127. I will post another video soon on Jetski safety and talk about the time the engine wouldn't start at 36fathoms and what I did to save myself. This is why I ended up buying a VHF Marine radio). I learn from my experiences and share it so hopefully I can help others prevent it from happening to them. Video coming soon!

Do you guys not get taught how to clear your own impeller? Turn the ski upside down and sit on the hull. You can even take off the full intake grate if you wish but generally a long sharp knife will do the job without removing anything. Saying you can’t just jump overboard to try and fix it is the wrong thing to say! If you can’t fix your ski without wasting the coastguards time and resources then you shouldn’t be going so far out with it in the first place.
@JohnCanFishTV
@JohnCanFishTV 9 ай бұрын
G'day @TheMuddatrucker, I appreciate your comment. Unfortunately, we are not taught how to flip jetskis upside down, sit on the hull and remove the intake grate. That may work for a mechanical person who's experienced... but for someone like me... it will be highly dangerous as I would not know what to do. I'm certain I'm not alone. In fact, it took me almost 45 mins, removing the jammed up line and lure on dry land. I didn't dare remove the intake grate just in case I will cause more damage. As for VMR, they provide a service to help people who face dangerous situations out at sea and the reason why we pay an annual service fee. I'm sure you would agree, that unless you are confident in doing all that ski flipping mechanical stuff, it's best not to take any chances and just call for help.

@@JohnCanFishTV the Vmr service you mentioned I’m not familiar with as I’m in the U.K. is it like a breakdown service on the ocean? If that’s a service you pay for then that’s ok to call for help. I just presumed any help you’d be calling for that far out would be a Coast Guard. In the U.K. we don’t really have any rescue service other than the coast guard and I don’t think they’d be happy with me calling them out for a problem that I’ve already been taught how to solve. The hardest part of the whole job for me is having to jump in and get wet/cold - U.K. remember 🥶 You stand on the side of the ski and just pull it over, it’s dead easy. Climb up the back onto the hull and stick the knife into grate and start cutting yourself free. Removal of the grate shouldn’t really be necessary but it’s possible. The only important part to remember is when you flip the ski back right again there’s usually a certain way to do it left/right? I can’t remember, there was an arrow on the hull reminding you the correct way otherwise you’d flood the engine. But like you said, if you’ve paid for a service then might as well use it. Sorry for that, my bad 👍🏻

It's just another way of thanking them for helping me out.

@@JohnCanFishTV the places you go look amazing! I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like to live there 👍🏻😊 I’ll have a look at VMR when I get a spare minute too. Skis are fantastic for fishing from, go anywhere in any sea state and they just power through everything. But My only gripe with a ski is the fact you only have one engine/propulsion system, I’d like to see these new “Fish” skis have the option of a second (emergency) back up propulsion system. There’s always plenty of room inside the hulls of these big skis so a back-up system should fit in there somewhere. The closest I’ve been to needing rescue was when fishing next to rocks in Pembrokeshire Wales, I couldn’t get the engine started and was drifting into rocks! Apparently what had happened was because the engine was Off and the sea quite rough and constantly slapping the hull, water got inside the air box and caused the starting issue. I look forward to seeing a few more of yours videos later 👍🏻

You're not wrong there. When I got home, the ski wouldn't start. So, I call JWS Sports, and they asked me how fast I was being towed? I said around 30-35kms per hour. They told me to quickly bring the ski in as they will need to pull the engine out and flush it out and if it's not done quickly, it will cause errosion and all sorts of other issues. Apparently, if you get towed, it's not good to go over 6 knots. VMR helped me out of a difficult and dangerous situation, but on the other hand, they flooded the engine. I can't expect to ask them to go 6 knots or less from Palm to The Spit as it will take them all day. What do you do?
