"...so that they never get to feel that [there's not] they don't have a dad." The biggest misconception with single parents is that they can do something so that their children don't feel the lack of the other parent. The truth is one can NEVER be two people, your children will feel the gap.

What you are asking in essence is equivalent to this, "how can you feel the struggles of being poor if you never had money to begin with?" Do not get me wrong, I think single parents get it right in doing the best that they can and know how to do. However, they should anticipate the damage that comes with not having two parents -- in fact, IF THE FUNDS ARE THERE, it would be best to let the child/children see a therapist to help them process the thoughts and feelings they have about the absence of the other parent. I have never heard a parent whose partner had passed on saying that they don't want the children to feel the absence of the dead parent, instead, they help them work through that pain -- single parents should do the same.
