Kayak Fishing for Squid in Puget Sound (Underwater Footage)

The squid are still hitting in Puget Sound! Went out for another day of squid fishing off the kayak and took some underwater footage of squid bites on the jigs for funsies. Let me know if you're just learning how to catch squid or if you're an old pro and have any tips to offer :) I'm always looking to learn more!

Thanks for watching! You definitely need to try squid at least once! They're pretty delicate so easy to overcook, but really soft, mild, and tasty when done well. Probably one of my favorite fishing because it's so easy!

What camera did you record this amazing video. How did you hang your camera in the line??

Thanks for the interest! It's a GoPro Hero5 (so definitely not the newest or nicest and it still took pretty good video quality!) with extra underwater housing since GoPros are only rated to 33 feet water depth. The housing was maybe $15 off Amazon and goes to 147 feet (amzn.to/3nwqwRm). I attached the camera to the fishing line by using the helmet extension arm (it's just a curved 9" piece of plastic with the compatible end connectors like the ones here: amzn.to/3oUFb99) and just running my line through it with a loop at the top of the arm. Then I ran the line through the screw part at the bottom of the arm where the housing was attached. Then the line has a swivel snap where I attached my fishing leader with the squid jigs. I just used the helmet extension arm because I already had it. I'm sure there are better ways to do this but I just wanted to make do with what I already had in the house.

Sure thing! The kayak is a Hobie Revolution 13 ft. The fish finder is a Ray Marine Dragonfly Pro 7". If you're in Puget Sound, I'd check out Gig Harbor Fly Shop to test drive the pedal kayaks.

Thanks! You can see squid on the fish finder, if they're schooled up they look like long squiggly horizontal lines in the bottom half of the water column. They're very distictive compared to balls of bait fish and salmon/other game fish.

Me and my wife tried squid fishing last year but it was a total fail. We didn't catch anything. How do we know when the squid are around?

The most up to date info if you're in Washington is to join the Washington Squid Fishing Facebook page. Lots of people share squid updates from all over the Puget Sound from pier fishing and boat fishing during squid season. I usually fish the Point Defiance Marina area and it was at it's peak last year from early November through early December but depending on the year it could be good anywhere from October-January.

When it's slow and you're hunting around for a school, yeah it definitely helps. When it's hot squidding it doesn't really matter.

What do you recommend for going out in late winter, early spring kayaking, apparel wise because I can where a lot of clothing but that's cumbersome. A dry/wetsuit would work for sure with layers on top. Just don't know what to use.

Kokatat makes some really excellent drysuits. If you're going anywhere more open water, 100% wear a drysuit. If I'm not in rough water, I'll often just wear chest waders with a fleece jacket or rain jacket over the top, but I wouldn't wear this anywhere not flat calm. I usually just do a wool base layer (tops and bottoms), sweat pants, fleece top, then outer jacket and either rain pants or the waders. I also always bring handwarmers in my pockets because I'm a wuss.

@@SeaWolfFishing awe okay, thank you for sharing. I have kayaked in white cap conditions out of Port Gamble/Point Julia Launch and I go out on the warm overcast days or hot with shorts and a flannel but once I'm soaked from paddling, it's uncomfortably cold without wind chill effect.
