Kayak Fishing on my Birthday… Bolsa Chica State Beach!

It’s not everyday that you turn 69 years old and what better way to celebrate than go fishing! It turned out to be a perfect day on the water with plenty of big sand bass and calico action!

Happy birthday Mate. Greetings from Australia. You are an inspiration to me, I am 58 this year and I have a Stealth Pro Fisher and a Hobie Outback. I was thinking how long I would be able to keep kayaking and I hope I will be at 69. I know what you are saying at the end of the day getting back up the beach!

Hi Mate… thanks for the birthday greeting. It sounds like you have the perfect combination with your Outback and Stealth Profisha. I never even think about dragging my Hobie Revolution 13 across the sand as it weighs twice as much as the Stealth. Even though I’m 69 years old, fishing out of the Stealth definitely helps me feel younger!🎣😃

A couple of weeks ago, I fished those same reefs from a small 17 foot Boston Whaler with my neighbor Jeff. At first we were just throwing Hookup Baits, as well as various swim baits. We both caught a couple of sand bass, but nothing of any size. Then we decided to troll a couple of Nomad DTX Floating Minnows. I was using a Silver Green Mackerel in the 140 size and Jeff was using the Spanish Mackerel color in the 120 size. We kept the trolling speed down in the 3-4 mile an hour range. We immediately started catching larger keeper size + fish! Both the 140 and 120 size Floating Minnows worked great! Jeff, who had his doubts, is now a believer!🎣😃

Hi Michael…. on both of the Penn Slammer 3 reels (4500 and 5500) that I use for trolling the Nomad DTX Floating Minnow 140, I use 50 pound braid and 30 pound fluorocarbon for the leader.🎣😃

@@losthorizonfishing107 Thanks, I appreciate that, I went out this morning from HB Harbor to platform Esther, got some small calico and a good size what I think was a white fish all on the red crab hook up bait, nothing on the Nomad DTX floating minnow, I got my Blue Sky Angler 360 registered so I can go straight out under the bridge, I don't have the nerve to beach launch that thing,

Haha… yeah I came off about 20 yards from shore. Fortunately, I’ve only come unstuck once on the way out, but on the way back in is a whole other story!🎣🤣🤣

@@losthorizonfishing107 Hi Dan! I launched out of Lower Newport so I caught a few spotties there but none at CDM. I’m still trying to get a hang of the skiff, preparing for La Jolla. I’m installing my Lowrance so that will be another thing to learn as it will be the first time I use a fish finder. I will never forget your generosity letting me fish your PA🤙🏼🤙🏼 Hope to see you out there brotha!!

I got a halibut this morning on the DTX Nomad Sardine! Unfortunately only 19" long, so, "Let's get this guy back in the water"!

Haha… it would be handy to have some way of knowing when the trolling rod has a fish on. There’s so many times where I’m editing clips and see the rod going crazy for full minute before I realize it’s fish on! When it’s a larger fish like a yellowtail or thresher shark, they pull drag like crazy and you’re definitely not going to miss that. But… smaller fish in the six to one pound range typicality aren’t going to pull much if any drag, so it requires a lot of glancing back.🎣😃

Just finished my 21 years in the service and hope that I will be as active as you when I am your age!! I haven’t worked up the courage to take my yak offshore in the Atlantic yet only the gulf, If I do I may post my vid and hope to get some pointers.
