KAYAK FISHING THE THAMES RIVER FOR BASS AND PIKE (London Ontario)

We started in Dorchester behind home hardware and paddled to St Julian park in London. This was my first time kayak fishing it was a lot of fun and we caught fish! Shout out to Carson for supplying the kayaks.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of the right bait/lures at the right time of day. I find it helps to target a specific type of fish by learning what kind of environments they like. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

My best days are on the Thames. Maybe not the biggest fish but there's still plenty of quality in there. Smallies in the summer love to get right into/next to heavy current. Tucked behind boulders, etc that break current or just off the main current seam (fast water meeting slow water). Make a cast 45 degrees upstream and let it drift with the current while mending your line. Adjust weights to make sure you have bottom contact and just bounce the bait down. Finesse style plastics do really well, I love the Zman TRD Ticklerz in Houdini or Green Pumpkin. I'd recommend buying some Neko/Nail weights and putting them in the head so you can texas rig them with a regular EWG hook. You'll lose so many ned jig heads in the Thames with the exposed hook, ask me how I know. Sometimes they get into submerged wood and deep holes/back eddies but I definitely tend to catch my smaller fish in eddies in the summer. Mepps inlines are killer, they catch everything. #2 or #3 are my favourites. Football head weights are your friend due to how rocky the thames is in most sections. (particularly the north branch as it was carved from bedrock by glacial melt waters) I have less experience with pike for sure but they seem to prefer deeper holes with weeds/grasses in the heat of summer. Early spring they chase bait in the shallows but our season is closed then. Seen a lot of big ones come out of the South branch, not so much the North. I'm still pretty new to river fishing in general and just started getting out more last year. There's a wealth of information you can find out there to watch/read about river fishing and it'll 100% improve your chances before you even pick up a rod. Enjoy the novel and good luck out there.
