Right you need to be sitting in the kayak on the water to get the right depth. After adjusted to the right depth and Without your weight in the kayak the pontoons maybe just above the water line. When you sit in it the pontoons will go down. If they are to deep then the pontoons will be holding all the weight of the kayak most of the time. Also suggestion about hatches in general. If the screws pull through the plastic on the hatch I suggest using pan head bolts with 1/2 NEOPRENE BONDED SEAL WASHERS to cover the entire screw hole for more surface area for the bolt head to grab.

I love all this that you do. I'll probably never get myself a Kayak as its just too big for me to carry round but love this! I was thinking: why not go PVC all the way? You can cut and glue PVC to make it watertight very easily. There are different diameters and you can even get it in sheet format to give the front end a slant so as to make it more hydrodynamic. Give it a try and let us know. Thanks for sharing man!

Marty, As I understand it, silicone can cause damage to the material used to make the hull of the kayak. I do know silicone sealer or lubricant can cause damage some plastic (HDP) to develop micro cracks around the margins were the silicone makes contacts with the plastic. Instead it was recommended to use a product called “Lexel” for sealing things that require sealing to HDP plastic. Unsure if you are interested in the Lexel however I thought I would forward the information to you and let you decide. I have a link to a YT channel where someone was using Lexel on a kayak equipment install. If you are interested in the link I would be happy to forward it to you. Regards, Jay…

That melting tool was ingenious. You skillfully finessed the radius channels into the two styrofoam halves. Got me thinking that the melting tool itself if it had been a matching diameter, you "might" have been able to melt in single pass. in hindsight, would that have been easier or harder to control?

outrigger attachment points on kayak experience some pretty large force due to leveraging. The stainless steel washers helps to distribute the stress, may still be a good choice.

I loved the way you made your pontoons and especially the stems for the scotty mounts however I have a slight problem: After gluing everything up I found that the bolt that was holding the stem to the short piece of pvc had not tightened enough to prevent the pontoons from rotating out of position. Did you glue the short piece of pvc to the stem and if so what type of glue did you use?

Zoff...quick question for you or anyone on this board to throw out...I have Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 Kayaks which have the tracks built in on the front and back. This deters mounting a Scotty mount like yours. Do you guys think a Scotty gear head track mount would hold up to pontoons, or would it rip out of the track due to the pressure of them? Anyone tried this? Thanks.
@zoffinger
@zoffinger 8 жыл бұрын
If I'm correct, the gear heads screw down to the tracks via a single bolt, similar to the way I attached the pvc to the mounts in this video. I think they would bear the weight of the pressure caused by the submerged pontoons, but I wonder if they would pivot under the lateral forces experienced while tracking, which would cause the pontoons to veer right and left instead of up and down like mine? I envision them jackknifing into the kayak, which would possibly cause tracking issues. Perhaps you could simply screw them to the tracks really tight to make that a non-issue? I think it's a cool idea though, Ryan.

Good video and idea, just some constructive criticism, would be more simple to use PVC pipe with the same diameter as ur styrofoam and just fill the PVC with Sprayfoam and put some end caps on?would work just as well if not better? I say this to cut out all the tedious preps you had to go through to get to the finished product. Please understand I'm not one of those people that Harp on all things that negative, I comment respectfully.
