In this video I'm reviewing a kayak that has been one of the best selling recreational touring kayaks in the world for over a decade - the Wilderness Systems Pungo. Now, kayaks have evolved and improved a lot over the past 10 years, and so the question is, does the Pungo deserve to still be one of the best selling kayaks in its class? That's what I'm going to find out in this full-on paddling gear review. More info on this kayak: Wilderness Systems Pungo 120: bit.ly/3E5BoOl

Great review, Ken. I was paddling a Pungo 120 until my wife fell in love with it. Now it's hers but, even after test paddling several other kayaks in this class, I ended up buying a Pungo 125. You touched on so many of the things that I love about it. I've got my console pretty well outfitted with RAM and GoPro camera gear, too, so some of us do make a lot of use of that feature. In general, thanks for all your paddling videos. I turned to them when I first got into paddling and I'm still a big fan of your friendly, straightforward style.

Great stability! I'm usually out on calm waters, but the Pungo has gotten me through high-wind whitecaps on a midwestern lake and the wakes from ocean-going fuel tankers on the Columbia. More versatile than it admits!

This is such an awesome review and it really helped me with my choice. I've always wanted a Kayak. For years and years and years. This morning I finally picked this baby up. I got the Breeze Blue Pungo 120. I can tell I'm going to be very happy with this kayak. Im from cold Canada, so I still have to wait a bit for the bay to warm up a bit where I live, but cannot wait to take my first ever spin. Thanks so much for the review.

We bought two of these kayaks a few years back as new kayakers in our 60s, and we love them. They are easy to handle, feel very stable, have comfortable supportive seating for longer trips and as someone who has had knee replacement surgery, the large opening makes it much easier to get in and out. I use the dashboard to have easy access to sunscreen, glasses etc. and for my water bottle. My husband doesn’t use his but he takes our small dog with him! We are very happy with our Pungos and expect to be kayaking with them for many years. Thanks for the helpful review!

I live in northern Ontario Canada and I own a pongo 120 lime green. I kayak a lot and I love my pongo. After a 9 1/2 kayak trip the pongo is still comfortable. The pongo is very fast but I find it hard to turn unlike other kayaks, but I wouldn't change anything. As far as being a stable platform I like to find big wakes from the big cruisers and kayak over their wakes. Where I live the boating can get very busy in the boating season months and can get a bit rough at times, but I have never felt scared of rolling over in my pongo. The pongo is a thrill in cottage white cap water.

I recently purchased a 120 and a 125. I would add you need to tether the dashboard to the kayak if you don’t want to see it float goodby down the river on a tip over. The dash easily comes off; the previous model had an elastic cord holding it on. I would also recommend adding an airbag in the bow. The rear deck hatches leak like a sieve. The lip on the lid isn’t deep enough to seal the compartment. I stuffed the hatch seal channel area with a 1/8” poly rope and topped it off with Lexan sealer to slow down water entry.

I bought the Pungo 120 because I wanted more stability than the Eddyline Skylark I owned. I'm very pleased with the stability I have with my Pungo 120. I'm 79 years old and get in and out of my Pungo from my dock. Very pleased with everything about it. I think the Skylark was a bit faster on the water and a bit lighter, my wife and several friends have Skylarks and love them. I'm pleased with my Pungo and don't become concerned when the somewhat larger lake gets choppy or windy. I transitioned to the Skylark from an earlier edition of the Pungo 120 but getting in and out of the Skylark at the dock was less than comfortable for me on a choppy or windy day. I bought a 2020 upgrade of the Pungo and find it is so stable and I like the accesory rack at the front of the cockpit. I carry my iPhone in the waterproof box there and am not worried about getting it wet. Make a lot of photos from the Pungo, morning evening. Spring, Summer and Fall. Love it. Thanks for your review.

@@korndawggy1801 Yeah the Dagger Axis looks nice and both boats are about the same price. I am looking for a kayak to fly fish out of, so I prefer sit-inside to sit-on-top (wearing a skirt makes line management much easier, and sometimes I fish at negative temperatures). It also looks like the cockpit on the Axis is much better for watertight skirt fits than the pungo

@@colinbailey5505 I like the idea of the drop down skeg for long paddles across a lake on the Axis also. There's a video where a guy uses a Pungo on the Chippewa River in Wisconsin and he's got a skirt on it. Looks like he's out in some cooler temps in the fall.

I’d found your review very informative. Thank you. I am particularly interested in your comments on the primary stability, and how the Pungo tracks. How would you compare both of these factors in the Pungo to the PerceptionJoyride 120 (admittedly more of an entry-level kayak)? Thank you!
@PaddleTV
@PaddleTV 2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I wasn't actually aware of the JoyRide 12.0. It looks very similar to the Pungo, but with a few less bells and whistles. From the looks of things, I'll bet you the Joy Ride has very similar performance characteristics to the Pungo. It looks like it will be quite stable and track very well. You get a more basic seat (still looks very reasonable) and you get a molded in dashboard instead of the removable dashboard. I think the JoyRide will be a good boat! I look forward to trying it.

I've been able to paddle quite a few sit insides on various US waterways over the years, both fresh and salt and I don't think I'll ever get rid of my 14 ft Pungo. I really like the pungo's and as you said they are faster than most kayaks. I am 6'3" and 200 lbs and the dashboard is a little tight for me with only and inch or two of space for my knees. The 2015 is even faster and a bit more stable. Only wish they would have a drain for the combing around the cockpit. Water sits in there and in colder weather gets your sleeves wet. Thank you Ken for all your videos. Because of your reviews I am leaning toward the Pungo 120 for my next purchase. It looks like a lot of fun. One question though; is the bulkhead at the stern gives the kayak enough buoyancy to float and be able to self rescue and get back onboard like it would be possible on a touring kayak?
@PaddleTV
@PaddleTV 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marc! Unfortunately, unless you have 2 bulkheads (1 in front of your feet and another behind your seat) it's very hard to self rescue. The problem is that the entire front of the kayak will be swamped. I would look at a kayak with a stern bulkhead as a kayak that is easier to swim or tow to shore if it gets swamped, and that helps keep your gear somewhat dry if that were to happen. If you want a kayak that you can self rescue with, you should choose one with 2 bulkheads.

I've got their Tsunami (sea/touring). It has the same V hull, and you're right, the primary stability makes for an easy lean to edge the boat a bit. But the secondary stability is ROCK SOLID. It actually takes some real effort to get it to roll over.

I have two Tsunami 125’s and just purchased 2 Pungo 120s. Both are terrific yaks and the Pungo has plenty of speed to keep up with the Tsunami which is more day touring oriented. As the wife and I get older we like the easy entry/exit cockpit. Wish I would have gotten the Pungos sooner. We use a Malone micro sport kayak trailer to haul all four boats. Way easier to load and unload especially with four boats now.

@@whiteknucklestormchasing We paddle smaller lakes and class 1 rivers and do not do overnight camping trips with the yaks so I would pick the Pungo if I had to choose one. That said the Tsunami is great and I use them both. If you are going to be on larger bodies of water and want to do day trips I would go with Tsunami with the two bulkheads and extra storage. The Tsunami has a better one with boat fit with the thigh braces so if you want to develop more skills such as edging the boat or kayak surfing, etc. the Tsunami is better choice also. Hope that helps.

@@fedguy9182 Thanks for the explanation. I will mostly use it for lakes that have a lot of waves from wind and boats. Mostly interested in paddling efficiency, and build quality. Yup. There are more than a few kayaks in this 'class', including the Jackson Tupelo 12.5 and the Old Town Loon 120 as well. To be honest... none of them stood out as being better. They're all really fun and friendly boats to paddle. The Saluda and the Tupelo both have suspension seats, which was nice... but the Pungo seat is pretty much the most comfortable non-suspension seat I've ever used too. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them... it really is a matter of preference, which means you've got some demos to do! :)

Ken since we are the same height 6'2' in height. I was wondering what length paddle you used with the pungo? Sorry to ask so many questions but I figured if I had to ask the questions, I might as well ask someone with a lot of experience.

For this Pungo review video, I was also testing out the Wilderness System, Apex Carbon paddle. One of the benefits of this paddle, is that you can adjust its length. That being said, I would guess that I had it set at around 225 - 230cm. If you're paddling the Pungo, or something similar, based on what you've told me, I would suggest going for a 230cm Manta Ray paddle. At 230cm, it will work well for both high angle or low angle paddling, and at 6'2", I doubt that you'd have any issue with the larger blades.

Hi Jimmy - I have an older comment further down the line. I don't know where you are located, but I'm convinced there is a conspiracy to just sell these locally so that they don't have to be concerned with international shipping. I put a $400 deposit on a pair of 120s back in early October 2020. I've been told many times that 'they are coming soon'. The dealer even installed my roof rack back in February. I called my dealer again today and their latest line is 'end of July'. I live in Ontario. You can't tell me that production is literally 10 months behind. I don't believe it. When I put my money down, my invoice also shows $1279 CDN plus tax. I am now told that I will have to pay the full retail price of $1399 plus tax when they get here. They won't even honour the price we have in writing. I wish I had never got myself into this. I am more than patient but this is very ugly now. And I've spent about $500 on rentals and it's just July.

what would you recommend to a 5'2 guy that wants to do recreational flat water to class1? pungo 120 or axis 12.0 or something much smaller? Thanks
@PaddleTV
@PaddleTV 2 жыл бұрын
While I think 12 feet is a great kayak length for your needs, my feeling is that the Axis 12.0 is probably too much of a river runner for your needs. It's better for people who want to paddle Class 2 and 3 whitewater and do multi-day river trips. The trade-off with the Axis is that it doesn't do nearly as well as the Pungo on flatwater. I think the Pungo 120 would be a better kayak for the type of paddling you're describing. It might feel a little big, but it shouldn't feel too big to enjoy. The other option would be a recreational touring kayak (12' -14') that is a little narrower than the Pungo and has a smaller cockpit like the Perception Conduit 13.0 www.perceptionkayaks.com/us/kayaks/conduit-130 or the Perception Carolina. www.perceptionkayaks.com/us/kayaks/carolina-120. There are many other kayaks in this class as well. I don't know about the $999 price tag. Cheapest I could find it for was $1200 and change. I've been using it all summer and here are my cons. First off, is the removable dashboard. If you're tall, like me at 6'4" or 6'3" that dashboard is going to tear your shins up and remove a lot of skin. First time I rolled it over I got back in bleeding all over my legs missing lots of skin. The plastic edge that is up against your shins is very sharp. And it makes getting in more of a challenge. If you're tall, don't count on using that thing. My GF is short and she likes it. Having a water bottle holder is nice. Second thing is the well in the back is not a dry well. Water gets through the bulkhead really fast. It's made out of dense foam and is really porous. Same with the little dry box in the dashboard. It's not water tight. If or when you roll the kayak, it's really difficult to remove the water that quickly leaks into the well, make it unstable when you climb back in to start bailing water out. Like I said, I'm 6'4" and 220 lbs but I feel like I'm moving pretty quick when paddling, but my GF who is much lighter moves faster than me. You might want to consider the larger version if you're tall and plus 200 lbs. But I think the performance and stability is still good for someone my size. The kayak is pretty wide and I find that I bang my knuckles on the edges pretty often, if I'm not paying attention. The plastic it's made of is pretty soft and will not hold up long scraping on boat launch concrete, so be careful there. These are my only gripes so far, and I have thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend it, despite these things.

I did not know if he was pulling my leg or not but then again he had narrow feet for a sz15 too. I don't know if it's because of my foot size , or my foot being very very wide , or because of my toes being equally straight across. My foot doctor said the reason why shoes won't fit my foot is because of my toes being extremely fat & wide & equally straight across. I wonder if it's my toes that's causing the problem. It really really sucks having a very extremely extremely wide foot with extremely fat wide toes that are straight across cuz it causes problems like which can be very embarrassing. The seat is just as comfortable as they say. I can ride a motorcyle all day, and this is just fine after 3 hours plus. When you are in the seat, the boat does not feel wide and bulky. It actually feels narrow like a dart, similar to the Tsunami. I have not used the console yet. It looks like it's possible to hit your knuckles on it. I'll try it before summer is out.
