I am on a small roadtrip in Sicily and in this episode I kayak with Andrea to the forgotten pride of Greek Coastal Shipping, the fast ferry Aeolos Kenteris. This fast ferry was built in 2000 in France for NEL lines in Greece. The ferry had an impressive speed of 40 knots and was the fastest in the Aegean Sea. The ship was later chartered in the Red Sea and was laid up in 2011 for renovation works, which never took place. This once mighty vessel is now partially submerged and rotting away in a harbour in Sicily.

@@bucketslash11Depending on the type, most ships live until they turn 30 years old. Ferries usually last way longer, while fast ferries mostly don’t grow that old, because every year many new are built being faster and more fuel efficient than the last generation. But 10 years is a huge waste of resources for any type of ship.

Lookup BC Fastcat ferries. Only used 3 years then sold for scrap. BC government spent 475million on 3 of them, and sold them 3 years later for 20million. They sat until 2009 then someone in Abu Dhabi bought them and they've been sitting in dock there since.

Once the fastest passenger ferry in Greece, she had a lot of problems with her engines, consuming a lot and because of her high speed when she passed near coasts created small tsunamis destroying everything. A lot of people sued the company for this

I believe this ship was equipped with turbines which will consume a lot of fuel when operated at full speeds. There are several other passenger ferries in use that are "fast ferries" but no longer run the route between the mainland and Crete in six hours. In its current condition it would be cost prohibitive to clean and restore this boat into service. You will notice that the ship has a list and one of the "garage doors" is partially submerged which is a sign that seawater has entered the lower decks of the boat.

@@derrickharvey295In the USSR there was a similar story about high-speed “river buses” “Zarya”. They created a large wave, which killed young fish on small rivers. After studying the impact on the environment, in the early 80s, Zarya boats were banned on many rivers.

alot of HSCs have a problem with fuel consumption, even Stena Line had their own example. I suppose the likes of Austal are more economic builds but the ones I've seen Austal make have also outlasted the ones that had to be retired over fuel costs.

Another banger as always Bob. Thank you. 20:50, that machine looks like a hydraulic pump system. Motor was scrapped for the copper windings. The tank likely holds oil. If this ferry had hydraulic doors, that could be part of the open/close system or due to the location, maybe for the elevators.

Can I ask one question, do you know what is one of the biggest killers on board ships? It’s entry to enclosed spaces, and that happens because you enter areas where oxygen is lower than that 20%. But it’s not only the absence of oxygen, it’s also because of toxic, explosive and corrosive gasses. Ships are built to be watertight and once they are being used they are forced ventilated. Just to put you in perspective even if the place might be open the chemical reaction of some thing as simple as iron can make the space unsupportive for human life. You will see the person in the area collapse just like they went unconscious and your natural reaction will be to go to help them, that’s when also you will collapse. I know that you enjoy such adventures and risks but please do inform your self, protect your self and the people you are taking with you. Do t forget that so many persons are seeing this video and basically you are enticing them in trying to follow your example. The least you can do is to carry and oxygen analyser and an EEBD. Then you have an other factor, the vessel you visited is in cold layup which means that its is not being inspected at all. Vessels of that age and especially so in the case of HSC when in service are inspected every 6 to 12 months. That craft is mainly aluminum which makes it suffer from corrosion and fatigue. You can end up causing a structural failure. For such a vessel to have such a list you can already tell that it’s in an advanced state of disrepair. I understand the excitement of exploration but do get educated about the risks and how to avoid them before you do such things. Not knowing the dangers you were in does not relive you of the bed example you are giving to your viewers. I myself work on ships and I have seen many stupid things which led to serious injuries. Don’t let it happen to you.

@georgesaguna
@georgesaguna Ай бұрын
@ perfect, so do show the subscribers that you do carry them with you so that they do understand the dangers around. Just to clarify some thing you don’t have to go deep in to the ship for the space to be oxygen deficient. All you need is a leaking fire extinguisher ( and you expect that to happen if no maintenance is being done). We had a similar situation when in an open hold but we had been carrying iron ore. The oxidisation mad the place unsupportive even though it was open. A tragedy was everted just in time because the crew was well trained. Stay safe and get informed.
@Subgunman
@Subgunman Ай бұрын
Considering the poor condition of the lower decks it makes me wonder if the last operators of this vessel had no regard for safety. Stowage of parts and trash in certain compartments in the lower decks could be an issue if the craft was in use today. I do understand that it has been the target of thieves and vandals in the past but I do wonder if the last operators were very lax in safety procedures.
@georgesaguna
@georgesaguna Ай бұрын
@@Subgunman don’t forget that these vessels are ment to be constantly maintains according to planned maintenance system, basically you have a weekly, monthly and yearly schedules. Other then that you get annual class inspections and flag state inspections due to the vessel being a passenger vessel and even more because it’s an HSC. These vessels are made of aluminum, and require frequent dry docking. A vessel of this age is considered high risk and inspected more often but due to it being in a cold layup only minimal supervision is carried out on the vessel. Basically such vessels are stuck in court arbitration between creditors and owners and hens there is no money for maintaining it.

That would be a major hazard for any explorer to undertake. Remember rust ship, you would not know if the deck you are walking on has rusted out to tin foil strength. Any cuts or injuries on might receive would have to be treated with medical professionals and you would more than likely receive that all to painful tetanus shot to prevent certain infections. Let’s not forget certain unmarked biohazards could lead to a terminal illness. Leave the rust buckets to the scrappers who sometimes have the equipment to demolish those old hulls.

Crazy that such a modern ship is already almost completely flooded in such a short period of time. I know all ships do get water overtime but not that quick! Maybe it had issue's with its hull not beeing that watertight as it should be. Sad lots of money did go to the drain here, while they already knew that going fast is going to burn a insane amount of fuel. That this is even legal with al that oil mess in all that water inside of the hull. If the water can get inside the oil also can get outside right so basically they are poluting the sea here.
