My vote is for the Jackson. More versatile drive system that has the detent...which anyone fishing the salt flats knows it’s not if but when you hit something with the drive. But I also like the fact that it comes with a few more extras. Not to mention the extra width adds just a little more stability when standing. And lastly the ability to tighten the rear bungie anchors without tools is a plus.

Great video and a lot of good info. But for the money you can get the Hobie Outback for about the same price as the Native. Before you make your decision check out the Hobie kayaks they are awesome and like someone else said you can flutter the peddles so you can go in really shallow water or push 1 peddle forward and the fins below the yak comes up and lays flat against the bottom of your yak so then you can paddle through very shallow water if you would like. You can stand up in the Outback but the PA is better for standing.

As a owner of the both the Jackson Cuda 14 and Jackson Big Tuna I would strongly recommend Jackson Kayaks to anyone. Nothing against Native at all just a personal preference. Great customer service, great kayaks that are pretty much ready to go out and fish with all the accessories they come with.

I have the Coosa FD and couldn't be happier. It really shines in the marsh and shallow water but also moves is pretty quick with the medium setting. I'm going to test the aggressive faster setting at some point.

They are "Both" beautiful... But I recommend you (or everybody) to check and compare the pedal system against the hobie drive system. Because for old people (or not so young people) pedal system in sit position is not as good as it looks (Back pain). Is NOT like riding a bicycle (body reacts different) ...and the native system is bulky while fishing. Check how your body mechanics respond to both systems (pedals Vs Hobie Drive) before making a decision. Happy 2018!! Fred.

And...If you fish in very shallow water with grass the propellers become uselesss...By the way...how you remove the vegetation from this jackson propeller? In my opinion you should try the hobie system also...is better in shallow and grassy waters...but mainly is all about how your body mechanics react to pedal Vs Push legs... I wish you the best choice....is not that easy. LOL.. consider the opinion of same age and phisical aptitude people, youngsters have no problems at all....they need to waste energy, but we don't!! LOL...

Out of these 2 I like the Jackson. I like the versatility of the prop levels on the Jackson especially in those shallow water drum spots! I like not having peddle systems when drum fishing but get it if you want to get in the big water and troll for kings or other deeper water expeditions I can see the advantages. Will be looking forward to watching how you mod out whatever you pick! Good luck in your decision! Keep the vids coming!

I just did this today and went back and forth for a few hours and decided Jackson and I couldn't be happier. you can actually beach the Jackson and not have to pull the drive at all. the wider width gives it better stability as well

I don't think you can go wrong either way, but the Jackson is the one I would get. The drive system is the reason. It keeps all the drive parts above the waterline and has the detent position that allows it to run in 6 inches of water. Both of those are important on the salt water flats.

That 6 inches is compelling. I do most of my fishing in tidal water that gets really shallow.

Steve you need a video with you doing a demo on the boats. Also you will be doing a great injustice to yourself if you don't put the wilderness system Radar 115 and 135 into your consideration. The flex pod is a game changer! and 45 years from now when you start to finally feel old you can pop in the motorized helix drive to propel the boat for you!

Thanks for the great video. I learned a lot. I don't have much experience or expertise to add to this conversation. But knowing myself, I would personally go for the Jackson, since I am sure I would destroy the drive on the Native by forgetting to raise it before hitting the beach, probably the second time out. I'm the guy they had in mind when they coined the term "foolproof." This innovation by Jackson could be what finally pushes me over the line to buy a pedal-drive model.

Steve, you have to try both before you decide, that being said I tried both this spring (the FD was one of the prototypes). My size was the deciding factor in finally ordering my Old Town Predator PDL (6'5" 290lb.). I loved everything about the FD except that my size 14 feet would have heel slap on the kayak deck every time I pedaled using the balls of my feet on the pedals. The FD is a definite game changer in shallow water (flats - hint, hint :). Good luck, I know you'll love whichever one you buy.

I have only fished a Jackson kayak and have had a very good experience with my paddle Cuda 14. It is not easy to stand in at 33” and leaves me trying to sit every time I stand. So width seems to matter for standability. My friend has a native 10 to cut down on weight and has to take out the drive for everything. Carrying is awefully heavy. Good luck with a 13’. I have the Slayer 10. The rudder on slayer is terrible, so I would budget $250 for an upgrade to the Berkeley one. When you run aground, taking the propeller out of the water is more difficult then it looks, because you have to align the prop with the hole, and that prop really turns fast when you move the pedal. If you catch the fishing line with the prop, it's a massive PITA to get it untangled, especially if you use braided line. After having the yak for 2 years, I would at least try a hobie on the water to see if I like their propulsion system better. But I do love the ease of reversing (without pulling any levers).

Agree wholeheartedly. The rudder system is the Achilles Heel on the Native. I have the Slayer 10 and the Titan and they put the same flimsy cable system in the heavy Titan and in rough water, the cable snaps in a few hours. Ridiculous! Both kayaks cut the cable at the set screw in the handle, same place every time. Does the Berkley use a whole different cable system?

I like the operation of the Hobie drive as opposed to the bicycle style of the other kayaks. Additionally, the Hobie system can be “flutter” pedaled in much shallower water.

Go with the Jackson. I owned a Native 12 propel with the same drive for 3 years. I found it a pain to raise and clean when there were weeds on the prop. I've owned an Old Town Predator PDL for a year and I'm happy with it. I do like the Jackson propel system. It's the best available I believe. For that reason, I would go with the Jackson if I was replacing my Predator PDL.

I own a slayer propel 13 and it is a good fishing yak, but has a terrible turn radius. I even put a boondox rudder on. If you fish you really will love the propeller yaks over the Hobie just for the reverse factor. Hobies are nice but river fishing in slow current and wind you need instant reverse or you have to constantly anchor. My advice would be to test drive them. Also from what i have seen on YT the NativeTitan seems kinda nice. Last thing is whatever you get put a boonedox landing gear on it and get a trailer ( it makes loading and unloading so much easier. Check out the Native Slayer Propel LT. It only comes in at 60 lbs bare bone, light enough to car top solo. If you're interested in a kayak that is light, pedal driven and easy to transport, this is the ticket. I'm done with hauling heavy yaks around.

For standing & fly casting, the Jackson deck looks a little cleaner. For what it's worth, I'd paddle (or pedal) both before I made a final decision. The cost is what keeps me in my 10+ year old Tarpon 120.

I have had the Slayer Propel 13 for about tow years and I love it. I got my wife the Hobie Outback w/reverse and I still would much rather have the slayer. That Coosa is very nice but I have not tried one. My Slayer held up very nicely down at Hammocks Beach with a strong incoming tide and a harsh cross wind. Both are very nice fishing platforms but the weight of the Coosa is a slight down fall. Those 20something pounds don’t seem like much on paper but in real life you have to think about how to carry it and how awkward it will be wherever you grab it. I have the Boondox landing gear for mine and it is a God send. But from the video I saw of your’s yesterday on positioning the anchor cleat didn’t you already make up your mind? lol. Either way you go will be great. Looking fwd to future videos.

You should look at the Slayer LT as well. Its 40 lbs. lighter and cheaper than the Coosa. From the kayak review vids I have watched, how easy the yak is to transport and get from your vehicle to the water is as important as it's performance on the water. Also ask yourself how do they compare to your current kayak in various ways. Will the new kayak you choose solve the old ones shortcomings? Will it create new problems?

I like the Jackson personally. I don’t own one but i would love to buy a Jackson BigRig some day. I like the Jackson pedal drive system due it size, ease of pedal removal and the prop protection system. Seems like you get more band for your buck than you do with the Native. Thats my opinion.

I really don't know if sea grass can be removed easily from that tiny hole in the jackson, you must put your hand underwater pull a bunch of seaweed you can't see (because the uncomfortable position) I feel is not suitable for everybody's needs. It must be tested on the field first.

Fred Fable actually thats strictly coincidental with names. I personally could careless what the name is on the side of the yak. As stated before, its all about the features and functionality. I don’t fish any were that has that heavy of under water vegetation so i would need to worry about the prop getting gummed up. Bottom line is that its personal preference.

Oh is a lovely kayak, Indeed. However I don't see any advantage in this propeller system design. Any line you run over with the propeller,(and that happens often) will put you out, in the middle of nowhere, I don't see a reallistic solution, ...probably you will need to get ashore disassemble the kayak, remove the propeller in order to clean the nylon mess and keep going. Some places are crowded with loose lines, be aware; Don't forget your paddles they will be essentials in order to come back... Besides that I think is a beautifull kayak. Fred.

The FD has a lot more bells and whistles and overall a better design but I fear when you get your fishing line, stringer or anchor rope tangled in it it might be harder if not impossible to get out while you are on the water. The nice thing about the native is you can rotate it all the way out and untangle it.

As far as the speed difference goes for the FD, your host forgot to mention that the pitch can be adjusted which will give you more speed but you also have to put in more effort. I'd go with the Coosa FD.

Kayak Hacks Fishing the Coosa and Cruise FD's are shipped with the medium pitch set. You will have to change it yourself to the aggressive pitch but I can tell you, there is a difference in speeds. Good luck with your purchase.

Haven't seen any footage of you actually testing either of them on the water. Never go based off what someone tells you is better. Get a real feel for them on your own instead of just looking at them in a store!

I was in there last week picking Chris's brain, and was looking forward to the cook off tonight but the weather screwed that up. The prices just get me, I can't swing that. I'm going to buy a new yak this spring, I'm looking at paddle not pedal though. After looking around pretty extensively I can't find a paddle boat that's got a better value that the Vibe Sea Ghost, the 13 gets the weight limit up where I need it and gives good balance for standing. Chris was concerned it was a Chinese boat but it turns out they're manufactured in Australia and the design people are in Kennesaw GA. Do you know of any other good options around $900?

I would go with the Native. Here's why: 1) weighs less (2) longer and narrower (better in windy conditions) (3) bigger tank well (4) you probably don't need more rod holders, do you? Why pay for them? (5) Cheaper! This all coming from a guy who loves Jackson, go figure. Try the Jackson Cruise FD (only about $2000 and comes with same FD system as the Coosa). The new Hobie Compass is also only about $2000 and has great reviews. I typically buy the kayak that is easier to carry and travel with. I'm getting old also. Good Luck.

Ok, if you are getting old like me...consider "not to pedal like a bicycle" from the seat position, rather test the pull-push action from the hobie drive system. Is a tottaly different thing. You may pay a little extra but you save a lot in pain relievers medicine. However both kayaks are beautiful. Greetings. Fred.

Compass hasn't reverse . Who would buy a car w/o reverse now a day ?? same for yak pedal . Hobie should have up the price 200 more and add the mirage 180 . The cruise FD weightless would be a good choice .

Does the native Slayer have a paddle park like the Jackson? Those things are handier than a pocket on a shirt!! What about stability? I'm leaning towards the Jackson, do to width and ease of standing, I really don't think the Xtra foot is going to make that much difference..Those would be my criteria for purchase, stability while standing/ and ease of standing., Along with the paddle park..man those things are handy!!!..I don't think you could go wrong with either!!! Scratch ur head, pull ur wallet out and go for it!!!! Good luck! Can't wait to see which you choose!!!

Kayak Hacks Fishing one thing I love about the hobie mirage dive is that the fins tuck up under the boat in shallow water .

Code 1 Outdoors it has 6 scuppers on deck. And also the hatches are way better on the Coosa, no water gets in like in the Native. I spray mine down and soak it and not one drop of water in the hull. Also I do saltwater fishing so I get the waves that splash onto the hatch and I haven’t seen a drop of water yet inside. The cheap bungee on the Native imo is not enough force to keep water out.

I, too, looked at both theses kayaks, as well as the Hobie Outback. Hobie’s drive system is much better than either of these. Sometimes you do get what you pay for!! At least look at the Hobie.

Sad Day why do you believe the hobie drive is better? I can’t see it being better with auto reverse while hooking that big one and pull it up into the cavity of the boat. My biggest reasons to prefer the Jackson

Well, is a total different perspective on Pedaling on a seat Vs Pushing forward your leg. Believe me...when you are not young your legs respond different, pushing is way easier to me. Second, fishing flats with grass...the hobbie drive is absolutely beyond an above. easier removing the little seaweed it could get, or simply moving the kayak along pushing the pedal half way in very shallow waters...the propeller becomes a ball of seaweed, and don't even think what happens when you cross an abandoned fishing line...BIRD NEST!! in the fins of the "H drive" rarely happens. This is only about the basic "mechanics"...
