I like DIY in general. But as a matter of practicality, I will generally use a commercial option if it costs less than a DIY version or if the DIY requires time or other resources I don't have.

Lots of folks seem to have some PVC Tubing just left over from other jobs, so they would only have to buy the 'Ends' and make the DIY option a lot cheaper.

PVC is tinker toys for adults. lol ... I made my own for my old kayak. Then my newest one came with one. The walmart near here has both the $13 one and over on the wall by the boating stuff, they had one with more mounting options for $9.99. I still like the PVC ones tho. Thanks for the series!

GREAT breakdown of options and cost... like so many of your subscribers, I would rather DIY mostly because, unless you are willing to spend 3 times as much by buying from the main "Yak Suppliers" ... the more affordable items seem to be pure CRAP ! But In this case I will be getting them from 'WallyWorld', I've seen them in the fishing section for $11 and change. So thank you as always for your research and due diligence. You could always melt you own plastics. Milk cartons are the same plastic as your kayak and both souks become pliable in a toaster over at 300deg. Heck you could even make them to fit your own rod. I might try that this weekend to see if i can get one that excepts and snaps onto my rod

I do like DIY, and sometimes I will do it anyway if the cost is the same or even if its marginally more expensive. You gotta weigh up cost vs quality. But PVC is so expensive in Australia.

everything is bloody expensive in Australia we check out the USA amazon link then go to the AUST amazon link and everything is almost twice the price and its not just the exchange rate , everywhere just seams to mark up everything for Australia

I would buy the kit as it gives you the options no diy rod holder can for the money. Making them would be fun, but due to their limited versatility, a waste of time and money. Plus I like the fact the kit allows you to slide the opening cover over the end to prevent the rod from falling out in wavy waters.

I use my mitre saw most of the time. When not using that, I use a hacksaw or the wire PVC cutter.

Pvc is getting expensive. Cheaper to buy ready made. I did my own on first kayak. Worked great.

The thing about pvc that diy'ers never mention is that it is not meant to be in the sun and will quickly become brittle from uv light. The cheapest chinese rodholder on the market is way more durable than pvc.

@@KayakhacksFishing ya, I'd recommend either painting it or using a uv protecting spray like "303 aerospace". The 303 stuff is good protection for your whole boat!
