In the summer of 1980, my best friend and i put a 16 foot john boat in at Jefferson, Texas and paddled down into the Caddo Lake. We did this because we were leaving for Marine Corps recruit Traning at the end of the summer. My friend passed away a couple of years ago, but this is one of my most cherished memories with him.

Depending on where you come from, it's not all it's cracked up to be and I'm a native! It's hot in 5 months of summer(June - October), and things are spaced very far apart.

Alligators and cottonmouths. Friends parents retired there, very quiet and yes constantly looking for snakes. They were on the water. Visited there. Very pretty.

Caddo Lake is about 90 min from our house and we go there often. We enjoy that beautiful watershed and ecosystem. Have not been on the water in our kayaks, but are considering buying a pontoon boat so we can enjoy the watersheds in Texas. BTW, you are near a good restaurant called River Bend.

I was there a month or so ago. We saw one big alligator from a pontoon boat and then I ran over something big when I was kayaking. I assume it was an alligator from the size of the splash. Word or warning, be careful when paddling towards something moving in the water even if it is still as you approach. Amazing place, has to be one of my top "forest" experiences.

What a majestic place! I would go kayaking there in a heartbeat if it weren't for the alligators. That's the only thing making me hesitate. Did you see any?
@secretsoftexas68723 жыл бұрын
I didn't see any but it was a bit cloudy that day.

xplore rc - in the last 50 years, there have only been approximately 33 fatal gator attacks in the u.s. ; primarily in florida (where there are a ton of people + a ton of gators). there have only been 2 fatal attacks in texas, in the last 200 years. alligators are way different than MAN EATING (saltwater/nile) crocodiles...just use a little common sense and you will be fine.

The New Madrid Earthquake did not create Caddo Lake. I don't know why this erroneous claim continues to be spread. Caddo Lake was a shallow natural lake with large elevation fluctuations long before 1811. In low water periods, it was really a large swamp with multiple channels running through it. Water levels fluctuated mainly from the effects of the Red River Raft. This state continued over thousands of years until oil was discovered on the Louisiana shore of the lake in the first decade of the 20th. Century. In order to drill in the lake (first over-water wells), a dam was built to raise and maintain a level that allowed for operations. In the late 1960's the Corp of Engineers built the dam that replaced the original. Those who are interested in Caddo Lake should check out Uncertain, TX.
