Kayaking Kanawha Falls, West Virginia

The sixth video in my series on great places for flat water kayaking in West Virginia. In this video we look at Kanawha Falls, a wide waterfall broken into several sections. This location is great for kayaking, fishing, and relaxing on a nearby river island with clean sand and lots of shade.

Thanks for watching! I think you'll definitely enjoy it. I'm not much of an angler, myself, but I know a lot of people who fish there and they say the fishing is excellent. BUT, there are also eels in the water. I know a few people have been freaked out when they've hooked one.

When paddling down stream from the New River can you paddle through or do you have to portage out to get to the ohio?

Hey, thanks again for checking out my videos. The New River becomes the Kanawha River in Gauley Bridge, WV. Then the Kanawha joins the Ohio river in Pt. Pleasant, WV. I've never paddled from the Kanawha into the Ohio but I believe you should be able to paddle right into it. You will go through a few locks on your way and you will definitely want to portage at the Kanawha Falls.

Is there a drop off at any point?

Hi Selena, I haven't kayaked very far downstream of the falls... maybe half a mile... but there were no drop offs. I have another video kayaking above the falls if you would like to check it out. Both those areas offer some nice kayaking. As far as scenery goes, it's really nice just paddling around the falls and the little island near them.
