Just watched your 3 day kayak thanks for sharing where did you start and finish

Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. We started at Kirkham Abbey, paddled past Malton to the Low Marishes then back to the abbey.

I've recently ordered an entry level packraft and was looking on an OS map at the River Derwent today. Looking forward to combining paddling and wild camping in 2021. Great video 👍

Good stuff 👍 Are you York based? What raft have you bought?

For me I think Day 2 is the better video 😁

@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Apologies, amended comment and meant to say packraft! Went for something lightweight, inflatable and packable. Ideal if I'm paddling in canals with regular portage and long walk in to water/pitch. I'm based in Oldham.
@MoreThanJustaCleaner4 жыл бұрын
@@ianofthetaylors6288 ah gotcha. From where we set off on the Derwent portage wasn't an issue. It would be if you got in further downstream 👍

Love the videos! Heading out tomorrow from Kirkham Abbey with a loose aim of wild camping on the shore in a bivvy somewhere between Kirkham Abbey and Malton (before heading back the next day) it's a new area to me, watching your video it looked like it took you a while before you could even stop for lunch. From memory could you possibly tell me if there's much opportunity for getting out along that stretch? Either way, love the vids and look forward to the next one!

I can't recall how far down we were when we'd got through all the tree area after Kirkham and the land opens up. There are a load of fishing jettys along there so you can bob out there. If you follow it zoomed in on Google maps you'll see an island called Cherry Island (I think) near Huttons Asmbo and that area is just before the island - it's actually quite a long stretch. It's actually clearer in the day 3 video because there was a fishing comp along the route. We opted to get out further up for breakfast. I know that first day we did about 13 miles - our first camp was after Malton where another river confluences with the Derwent, but I can't recall its name. I hope that helps! Anyway, have fun and let me know how you got on :D Ooh, just remebered, there's also a slipway of sorts not long before Malton. There's an industrial estate on the left and the slipway is on the right. There are other areas too, but it will depend on the river levels.

Love the videos. We've just bought a Sea Eagle drop stitch two man and wondered if you were just going to do a day paddle on the Derwent where would go to and from. Happy to take two cars or alternatively paddle back upstream if you think its doable. Happy to be on the river for 5hrs...and we will have a dog with us. Any advice would be appreciated and any I can give on the Ouse from Ripon to Naburn, or the Great Glen paddling let me know. Cheers Colin

Cheers Colin 👍 I am planning a Ripon to York paddle at some point so that could be useful. The Derwent is still relatively new to me. From Kirkham Priory you would get to Malton and back in a day paddle. More recently I launched from The Breighton Ferry and paddled up river for a couple of miles. I didn't go far because i was a bit under the weather. Nevertheless it's an absolutely beautiful stretch and so quiet because it's out in the sticks. It's on my radar for further exploration. I reckon from there you could shuttle to Wheldrake Ings using 2 cars, maybe even to Elvington area. I tested the new GoPlus craft on there and have recorded it, just not got round to uploading yet.

@@MoreThanJustaCleaner thanks for the tip. Deffo let me know if you're doing Rioon to York. Last time I did the Ripon canal one of the locks in the middle was going thru a massive repair and it was really tricky getting the canoe passed all the construction. I'd probably drop in a Westwick lock and start from there.

I'm new to sailing, still exploring my local waterways looking for some good campsites. I use an inflatable row boat and row forwards. It's just as easy sitting up or lying down. It was quite windy today and I found a significant difference as I rowed while sitting in one direction with the wind also blowing me along, then when I went back the other way into the wind I was lying down and the blasts of wind just went straight over the top of me!

Your GPS will be way out because of the gap between readings and the fact rivers aren't straight
