Standing on the banks of the Rio Grande at the Colorado Canyon access point, I knew this was going to be a great adventure. This river is incredibly beautiful in this part of Texas. There are several rapids and challenges along this 7.4 mile stretch of river but none are too difficult or dangerous for the average person to handle. The canyon is beautiful and I had a blast navigating the various rapids and boulders along the way. The biggest threat for me was not the rapids or boulders but one that I didn't anticipate, river cane (bamboo) which is common along the river bank and can stick out as much as 10 feet over the river. Keep in mind that once you enter the canyon, there is no way to exit until you complete the journey so be prepared. Don't kayak alone and be sure to wear a helmet. I also recommend kayaking when the temperature is 70 degrees or higher.

made me feel like i was there! Love how remote and wild this is. Some bog hard things in the way - watch that snapper? doesn't bite the kayak - those bushes were something else lol. Thanks for sharing that trip :-)

Wow, wow! I thoroughly enjoyed riding shotgun with you on this beautiful and incredible journey! What a gorgeous place to be to have some solitude. I can only imagine how much fun kayaking the river was, especially in those rapids. I am so envious! I've lived in SE Texas for so many years, and have never ventured over to Big Bend. I sure hope to visit there in the near future. Thank you so much for the phenomenal bird's eye view.

I would allow 4 hours to complete this journey. I put in a the Colorado Canyon access point and got out at La Cuesta. You can go a little further if you like to the next one at Lower Madera campground. I wanted to do that but it started to get dark. I did this on the shortest day of the year.

I went canoeing down there for a college credit back in 2009. I absolutely loved it. We started at Colorado Canyon. We even saw the little hut where the music video was shot for "My Maria" at one point. We spent a few days canoeing as well. I wore shorts the whole time and my white ass thighs got sunburned af. I had blisters at the top where my shorts ended, but it was definitely worth it. My now exboyfriend and I camped outside of the tent and fell asleep under the brightest stars I have ever seen. That's the least light pollution I've ever experienced, as I'm from (and still live in) Pascagoula, MS, home of the largest employer in the state. This video takes me back.

It's a gopro so there are various ways to mount it. I use a head mount when kayaking and chest mount when mountain biking.

When was this filmed ? I've never seen the.river downstream of El Paso, I live in the mesilla valley and it's completely dry. Being that it's damed at caballo and elephant butte. Wondering where the water down there comes from in the winter. ?
@secretsoftexas6872
@secretsoftexas6872 3 жыл бұрын
This was in mid-December. There's a sizeable tributary near Presidio that comes from the Mexico side, Rio Conchos. It appears that there may be a few other smaller ones between El Paso and this stretch of river

I got out at La Cuesta campground. I originally wanted to continue to the next campground along the river (Lower Madera) but it was almost dark by the time I arrived at La Cuesta. I literally did this around the shortest day of the year in December. I had someone there drop me off and pick me up.
